Welcome to Club SAITO !
I would be glad to smear some PAG oil on some steel sheet and castor on the other and leave them out behind the shed. Will do it tomorrow. I can post pics on January 1. Although it won't take near that long to se rust.
No, you are correct. In addition the methanol attracts moisture, so any unburnt fuel in the crankcase, along with the synthetic oils can quickly form rust. The downside of castor is if left too long it gums up and is very hard to remove, even when soaking in raw fuel. I have an OS 91 given to me because it was completely locked, both crank/piston and carb. I tried soaking it in raw fuel only to make a bigger mess, and finally got it freed up with denatured alcohol. Even with scrubbing with fresh alcohol until is seemed squeeky clean, set it on the shelf and come back 6 months later it is all stuck again requiring another bath, and that was WITH fogging oil injected. It looks purdy though I will never use it.
Yes, exactly.
With only 2% castor however, I have not been troubled by varnish in the least. (Despite the claims , scowls and tormented negativity of the may-sayers ).
In any event, rust is forever.

The SIG fuel is 16% oil 50/50 blend Klotz Castor and synthetic. Thats why I wanted to flush it. 6 months sitting in a box is a sure fire way to have it all gum up. How much oil would I add to a gallon to bring it to 18% from 16%.

Hopefully you will simply limit the castor to 2% to 4% of the total fuel
With purging and after oiling, gum and varnish is not a problem.
Waxy content anti corrosion oils like Boeshield T-9, CRC 3 etc create the same type problems.
They are great anti corrosives for tools and machinery , but there are better solutions for engine guts .

When you get tired of looking at that gummed OS91 send it my way, I'd love to have it.

Have any of you tried S&W fuels, I checked out their 4 cycle fuel, it is 23 bucks per gallon for 15% nitro methane and 17% synthetic lube lube. I may call Stan and see if I can pick it up. NJ is not that far.
I'll call Red Max first and if they have gallons, I'll go there, they only show quarts on their website.

S&W sounds like very accommodating company. the site says they will blend whatever you need.I would like to know what oil they are using, aside from that, why not give them a try?
At only $23/gallon you can get a lot of time out back on the old test stand

The 15% NM and the 17% lube would maybe make a little more power than the Wildcat 10%/18% lube. In about 1993 and 1994 I used Wildcat 10% with 16% 80/20 blend because I had two RCV's and that was the recommended fuel, Saito's ran great on it. So, thinking, thinking.

OK, I ordered a gallon of the S&W 15 x 17 fuel @ $23.00 and $16.72 shipping, I probably would have been wise to order two, oh well. It's a 4 hour drive to S&W, almost 6 hours to Red Max
I should have one of these Wednesday.

David McIntyre used S&W near the end of his video career. He seemed to like it.
Do you not have a Hobbytown close by? I buy a case of Morgans Omega 15% and a case of Morgans Coolpower 15% and mix them together 50/50. Makes 8 gallons of 15% synth/2.5% castor and the price per gallon works out to $26.50 out the door. That seems about the cheapest I can find right now short of mixing my own.

Wow shipping almost the same cost as the fuel. Is Wildcat no longer made? Only stuff the HS has is the 2 stroke premium. I'm down to my last quart and will have to switch over to the SIG stuff. I also have a couple sealed old gallons of FAI fuel. Don't know how well the engines will run on it.
Most Saitos will run ok on FAI fuel. The high compression ones run especially well on it, as do those equiped with cdi. If your FAI fuel is 20% castor be sure to run them richer than with synthetic or synthetic blended fuels. That will help with keeping the combustion chamber and valves cleaner. A heavy smoke trail is a good sign.
If I can get my 72 running right again, though I think the fact the cylinder was loose was the issue, I may run the FAI fuel through it and see. All the other Saitos are in planes that need all the oomph they can get. I could also use it in the Cub with the FA 100 in it. In fact that one will be the best candidate since it only needs 1/3 throttle for scale flights, half throttle has the guy wires singing, full has it climbing towards the sun like an F-15.

The cylinder base screws were sent out last week, should be there tomorrow or Tuesday.

Thanks, I will keep an eye out for it. One more coat of Yellow on the Liberty Sport, decals and red stripes and it is ready to go. I finally ordered those short McDaniels GP extenders and added a remote GP socket to the cowl. I will actually be the first fully completed plane I have done since the LT-40 back in 2011. I usually get it built and flying before detail. The Chipmunk is 100% completed too, but it flew twice before I finished it, good thing too or all the decals would have been destroyed.

Gary, I'll look for a 56 intake pipe.
AC, your Saitos will run great on the FAI fuel and don't concern yourself with the wide needle versus the narrow needle BS, the peak is still the peak.

My FA82 modded to 11.75:1 compression runs really good on FAI. Down a little on power of course but needles well and no troubles with idling at 2K. Compression was raised for peak performance using 15% nitro. Gary's custom muffler helped a bunch too!
I never tried FAI fuel when I had my FA65 (the 8.6:1 version). Wish I had, to see how sensitive the needles were. Oh well, next time. I should have never sold it, it ran so sweet with that metering barrel design.

I had a little more energy today and made some progress on a certain pink airplane. I need to finish the Turtleback tomorrow and then I will post a picture or two. They won't let me stay with the wife for her surgery so iot will take my mind off it.
