how to make a flowing checkerboard
Guys , I had alot of great responses on the 3D AMERICAN FLAG thread, I thought I'd share another covering technique. I call this "flowing checkerboard", kinda makes it look like its moveing.
The plane is a Morris Hobbies "Spinsation". the covering is Black Baron ....black and white ultracote. I used heat to iron the white down cause it dont lay down with Windex like good ol monokote.
pic #1 shows the black already in place

pic #2 shows white ultracote with a sqaure drawn on it...this is done free hand, cut out and stuck on the plane, dont matter where you stick it on the black, but I like to go kinda tight up against the fuse

in pic #4, I take a larger peice of white covering, drape it onto the wing and let it overlap onto the 1st white sq. you can easily see the edges of the white square throught the larger peice of white. so know just draw another sq onto the larger peice of covering, that touches the 1st sqaure

the rest of the process is repeat the previous steps. In this pic you see the larger peice of white covering overlaying the checkerboard, the orange line shows how you keep everything in line with the 1st few sq's you put down, it also shows the black dotted outline of the next white sq

hers the final product. the PRO BRO lettering is made of white Black Baron film stuck on with windex, its outlined with black ultracote, that is ironed on. the font is called "wizard", I got it out of a program called "paintshop pro". I sized them in the program, printed them on my printer, cut them out and traced them onto the white BB film. the black shadows were made by takening the letter cutouts, turning them over backwards and then traced just where you want the shadow to be on the back of the black ultracote, you have to have the letters backwards when you trace on the back of ultracote so them come out frontwards when you turn the ultracote over....enjoy........Gator

Seriously though,
I am trying to decide on a scheme for it and am drawing a blank.
Any suggestions? Its a 35% Extra.

sure Tim
the tear away was made with ultracote black and white 1" sq covering. What I did, was just randomly free - hand a patch of the checkerboard ultacote. Then before I pulled the backing off. I layed it down ontop of some silver and outlined the checkerboard onto the silverso I would have the same shape. With a felt-tip pen, I would draw the jagged edges outside the contour that I traced on the silver. Intsead of cutting the line I traced, I came inside that line by an 1/8", so that it would overlap onto the checkerboard. I will post some pic of the top of it when I'm done. I started a thread in the FF forum called Morris Spinsation and I'll put some pic there....G

Damn you Gator! I've been telling everyone that your 3D flag was just a "fluke". That you were a one-hit wonder! And now this! (Just kidding, of course!)
You need to write a covering book. Good job!
