RE: Airworld Hawk Building thread
Iv'e completely redesigned the flap mechanism, because there is nothing scale with the model flaps.
where there are four hinged inspection covers on the full size I have cut the top off the wing skin and removed the rear web which is what prevents the scale flap retracting into the wing. I have installed a new spar/web further forward and fitted the mechanical link to the centre hinge post so the push rod moves inside the centre pylon as full size and you don't have to slot out the flap vane to clear the push rod
With this all assembled and working the flap vane now adopts the correct position when 50 degrees of landing flap is deployed. The flap hinge fairings are interesting ( I'll take some pictures when I attack the second wing panel) they have like a teardrop formed into the hinge cover which is split in such a way as to leave no gap when the flap is up, very clever, this teardrop is formed from acetate sheet pulled round a former with the aid of a heat gun. I'm sticking with the 8411 servo because the plate is machined out for them besides the two I have just bought seem to have much better gearboxes and perfect resolution is not really required for flaps anyway.
Are you taking yours to St Athan Geoff

RE: Airworld Hawk Building thread
Hi everyone,
Very happy to say I have flown my Hawk this afternoon and it flew like a dream. I am very excited by this plane, not because it hard to fly, quite the opposite, I am excited because it flies so well!
I had three flights which included Loops, slow rolls and 4 point rolls etc and it was great.
As far as landing is concerned it seems very easy to land, probably due to the trailing linkage on the struts.
Looking forward to putting more flights on it ASAP.
My good friend Dick Spreadbury was able to take some photos of the test flight and they are in a separate thread you get to here

Geoff, Congrats!
How did you find the power - several have said a P120 would be sufficient?
So, is it going to be a 'Reds' paintjob or something different??
Rgds,
Mark

Hi Mark,
I have a AMT pegasus putting out 37lb ish thrust and it was crusing around at a 1/3rd throttle and only used full power on the verticals so yes I feel it could definately fly on P120. what the vertical s woudl be like? No idea.
As far as colour schemes, yes it was going to be Red Arrows but considering other schemes as well. Going to put 20-30 flights on it first before I do all the nice scale bits and painting.

I will be at RAF Scampton with the Red Arrows next Wednesday, 13th. Any Hawk builder who wants a close up of something on the machine which I did not cover in the original CD should PM me and will get a shot of it for you.
Regards,
David Gladwin.

Thought you might be interested in some more photos of the Hawk in flight.
Thanks to Dave Wilshere for the photos! I think the third photo is superb, but I am biased!

Congrats Geoff
She looks great
Could you please advise me of how much aileron travel you have set up and how much you are using
Have you experienced any pitch changing tendencies when using flaps or speedbrakes etc ?
I will be test flying my Hawk next weekend and i am trying to pr plan everything
Congratulations again
Regards
Francois

RE: Airworld Hawk Building thread
HI Francois,
I am using the exact aileron throw they recommend which is +/- 20mm with just a little expo. I found this to be just about right as it takes just over a second to do a roll.
Couldn't detect any trim change with speed brake open.
With the flaps there is a nose down pitch and the magnitude of the nose down pitch is directly related to speed of the model. I inadvertently found this out as I forgot to retract the flaps after some slow flight. Its nothing to worry about as at slow speeds it is only slight and I have just been manually adjusting elevator to get the right speed/rate of descent.
If you run the CG at the recommended position(120mm in front of tube) then it will fly fine but I found the elevator a little soft so I have moved CG back approx 5 mm. I recommend you don't use any less elevator than the recommend(35mm up and 30mm down).
Best of luck with the test flight.
Geoff.

RE: Airworld Hawk Building thread
Guys,
In an attempt not to do the same Red as everyone else, I am going to do one of the synchro pair. I believe it is Red 7, Jim Turner.
Can anyone confirm this info and also let me know the XX registration number and the other crew member. I believe there are always 2 names on the Arrows???
Thanks,
Mark
