I decided to wait with the maiden... dont want to loose a $2000 airplane because one bolt wasnt secured... gona do a long pre flight check on this one...
plus sunday was a 20 mph wind in here... if the weather cooporates... maybe next weekend.

Say anyone who put a DA in the front of this airplane how did the CG work out for ya??? Mine is way too tail heavy with 2 batteries in front... what did i do wrong???

And, what are some good throws... low, high??? maybe expo???

Ok, thats about it for now...

USAce

first i fly with a heavy tail, now i put 300 grms ( 10.5 oz) on the front of firewall, ignition batteries on front in the engine box, and servos batteries near the center of the wing, i change the landing gear and the new is a few more weigh (i put a giles 1/4 scale , is more hight and stronger).

you put 2 servos on front, maybe you need a few of weight on front.

one opinion: i think you need more reforse on the center fus, i think there is the most of force of the engine to all the plane, on the picture i can see a very clean work, but there i put a little reforse on all the joint betwin the 2 fus.

My CG is right at the wing tube, It is not tail heavy and flew well at this point. I do not know what the difference colud be because the two planes have the same set up I think...

Thanks Guys.
But it was my fault... i was checking the CG on the tips in the wrong spot... When I take the plane by the wingtube in the fuse... It balances perfectly...maybe just little nose heavy... thats because my ign battery is on the side of the firewall.
Painted the cowl and the wheel pants.

The weather wasnt cooparating last weekend... Maybe this one... I want to maiden without pressure...
Also, my club had a static show today... Not good, not bad, but got a 3rd Place.

Waiting for good weather conditions... Then Maiden!!!

Bye

These planes are designed to fly. If you think you will make hard landings or that you will make lots of hangar rash, I suggest you reinforce in strategic places. Don't ask me where to reinforce, I don't own the plane but by looking over one and flying one I can tell it is plenty strong to handle flight loads.

Sorry guys, one more question
Is it OK if the plane is tail heavy, just a little???
I dont want it to be too much tail heavy, to dig up and down in the air.
And also for torque rolling you need little tail heavy, do you?

Thanks

From my experience, torque rolling is not that much easier when tail heavy. It just widens the spot the plane can recover while torque rolling. I mean that it makes it possible to put back the plane straight up when it is a bit more angled than with a nose heavier plane. Is that clear? The plane I flew was not mine and feeled nose heavy. I made 2 or 3 complete flights with it and I feeled the "spot" was very narrow but once in, it was real easy. Remember this is a long coupled plane. My 3D plane is real short coupled and it has the widest spot I have ever experienced. The plane can be at an easy 30 degrees off vertical and it gently comes back to vertical. Downside is that once it is perfectly vertical, it is less stable than the CA27% I tried. I constantly need to make some cerrections as the CA needed only some and much less ofthen.

Anyway, torque rolling becomes really easy when you are able to keep the plane as vertical as possible and just slightly correcting all the time.

For CG, just put a big washer on the motor shaft and fly it that way. Remove after if not required. Makes for a safer test flight...

flymeaway,
The 5645's are doing great. I have two coupled together with SWB equipment and its plenty of power. I am going to replace them with one of the new Hitecs that put out 333oz of touque when it come in to save a little weight.

You can fly this plane a little tail heavy. I would try it in the middle of the CG range and go back from there. You can use a carbon prop if you need a little more weight up front.

I just added tri-stock around the landing gear area and engine box.

Thanks El Temucando!!!
I will reinforce more like you said.

Today was a great day!!!
I went out to te field, showed off my new Extra 300!!!
I was hoping for some pointers from the experts, and got them!
Haven't maidened yet because both of my switches were little too light of a duty for this plane.
And the CG is too far aft.
I will get new switches installed soon.

So far, ran the DA-50... UnFreakinBelievable!!!
I havent had an engine run that good out of the box, forever!!!
Didnt need any tweaking at all!!! Range checked both ways, DA on, and off, awesome!!!
Started very, very easily. Couple of flips with choke on, ign on... Choke off, 3 flips started up!!!
Idles... the lowest rpm's i've ever seen... Forgot my Tachometer at home, next time i'll check, but low as hell!!!
Top end... I was holding the plane with my feet as choke, the plane wanted to sing and rocket away!!!
I love it!!!!

Here are couple of pics of my flying...

Couple of questions for you guys:

What size main wheels are you using?
Axles?
Tail wheel assembly? (How is the steering mechanism attached to the rudder?)
What should the distance be from the firewall to the front of the cowl? (I don't trust the instructions' dimensions as they seem to be off in other places, they say 270mm - is that right? I'm trying to decide how much cowl goes beyond F1 toward the back of the plane for mounting.)

Thanks.

Hey flymeaway!

I use 3" wheels, axels to fit into the wheels. http://www.shopatron.com/product/pro....5172.5171.0.0 something like that...
Tail wheel http://aero-works.net/store/detail.aspx?ID=116
The distance i have is 1/8 of an inch past F1, you could heve a 1\4 somewhere in between.
The firewall should be as long is needed foe your engine to be, put the plane nose up, on a ladder or something. puth the engine on the firewall. put the cowl on.
put the spinner on. measure the distance from the front of the cowl to the spinner. cut that distance from the firewall. check if its good. glue the firewall together.
install the engine.

hope this helped!!!

You people build way faster than I ever could. Between an infant and simply the rest of life, I only get a couple nights a week to build, if that. Anyway, I have another dumb question...

Maybe I've missed it in some of the other threads, but I'm wondering how you found the thrust line center on F2. Is is dead center of F2 at stock length, then take into account how much has to be cut off the box and move center accordingly? I would assume it is, just want to know how you fellas did it.

I'm finally gathering up the parts and pieces...... Got my engine - I decided to save some cash and went with the Brillelli 46cc so I could go with better servos than I originally anticipiated. I'm running 5645's on elevators and ailerons, and one 5955 on the rudder. Should work out well.

I'm undecided on what brand of prop.... I'm leaning toward a 22x8 to start with.

End of June is the maiden goal. We'll see.

Thanks for any input guys.
Bob

Bob,
I believe I moved the center line of the firewall over about 3/16" to get my engine to line up with the center of the cowl. Though I am running a Taurus 52, the measurement should be close for most engines using standoffs or a mount. Remember, I had to cut one inch off the engine box!! What I do tack glue a round dowl to the center of the firewall, after I cut down the engine box, and put it in place. Then I temp mount the cowl and see how far I need to move the center line over. Make sure you use a square when you tack glue the dowl in place. The dowl should be long enough to pass beyond the front of the cowl about an inch or so.

I have about 11 flights on mine now and am starting to work on trimming it out. I did need to adjust the thrust angle a little. I'll know next flight if I need more. I can't recall which side I added washers to at the moment. The plane flys great so far and I think the CG is about right. I may need to go a little more aft with it for strait downlines.

Tom,
Congrats!!! Keep us posted on the plane. Did you get the 300L or 330?

Gleb,
Fly that thing!!!! Your going to like it.

Hey

Nope, no maiden yet, this spring is good only on weekdays, when i cant get to the field... That Sucks!!!
Switches... I went with an old big(i think its heavy duty) switch for the Rx. Found it in my old parts...
Ignition got a big swich from the Radio Shack I think... Its an ordinary 2 way swich HD too.

Well Saturday seems like a fair day, 68* 13-14 mph winds... Still the wind is a little on the high side but will do.

Thats about it...
Bye

Pic is the Rx Switch
