If the valve never opened, there is no possibility of impacting the piston. The only question is if the pushrod was binding when not seated properly, then there might be some damage to the valvetrain. But if it is moving smoothly after you re-seated the pushrod, then I would guess there is no damage in that area. (of course, I am just speculating since I have not seen or checked the engine myself. Just theorizing.)

Your theory is correct.. everything moves nice and smooth..after reading what you guys said. I think I am going to be OK.. I will have my parts for the carb today, going to put that back together, have somebody at the club give it a look/see to make sure everything looks good visually and hopefully that will be that.

I was going to say the same thing - with geared cam timing, it would have to bust a tooth to be able to jump position and change the valve timing. Or... if the gears are worn so much to allow it to slip. It would be a fair pig of an engine if that were the case

Now, if it was put back together incorrectly timed, that would be a whole other ball-game...

Question on a Saito 72 - I want to install a remote High End needle valve - can I just open up the valve attached to the carb to full open then put the remote needle valve before the gas in nipple on the carb? I wanted to make it simple without making any major changes.

For safety I did this to all my older 2-strokes with the installation of a remote needle kit, (made by Fox, OS and the stronger, alloy version from Evolution. Each kit was in the $10-15 range and OS made a carb plug to replace the stock HS needle assembly, (sometimes then mounted to the remote setup) for about $5. The plug fit a lot of different make of engines so must have been a standard size for many.

That plug would likely not work on the Saito as if memory serves the HS needle threads into a brass fitting that inserts from inside the barrel bore of the carb. You could do as described by opening the stock HS needle, (I would suspect only 1 turn rich would be required as you are working lean from there) and adjusting the mixture remotely. Just remember that 4-strokes react slower to mixture changes than 2-strokes and a remote needle may amplify this delay based on distance from the carb inlet.

Cougar - that is what I did - put in the remote valve and turned the "stock" valve two turns rich. Once i get it up and running I will see how sensitive the Remote valve will be and adjust everything from there.

You are correct - on the Saito I couldn't just remove the brass fitting so I will try simple way and see how it works. If it is not good then I will just go back to stock needle valve.

Figured it would not hurt to ask again here if anyone has these sitting around or info on changes.

Recently purchased a 65. Stated it had been serviced, but hopefully no other motors make it through their hands.

This is what I need:

Intake valve and keeper, (luckily no impact with piston)
Pushrod tube upper seals
Piston pin end retainers, (teflon buttons were both missing)
Rocker pivot pin
Complete gasket set
Prop 7mm retainer nut

Cam and lifters would be low on the list as there is low wear, but when going this far may be worth replacing.

Here's the really fun part. When dismantled I found the spacer between the cam and front bearing had been replaced with a nut. I fabbed one, but if anyone has that rather obscure piece let me know.

When looking through the parts listings I frequently found an entire set had to be purchased for just one piece. Hoping to avoid that.

NOTE: From the pic it may be seen the muffler and tube are one welded assembly. I'm assuming this is an early gen. Not sure if there have been changes to the pieces listed, but if anyone has info regarding specifics, it would be appreciated

Yep tha is an early Saito muffler just like the one I lost of my first 65. They are also similar to the 50 I have as well.

Thanks for the kudos on the .72b. I'm going to break it in carefully on the stand before I fly it. It's going to replace a .56 in the H9 Cub. I had found that the .56 would fly the Cub nicely in light winds. I tried flying it on a windy day and it was not a good decision - hence the 'request' for the .72b.
