Here is my set up for the controls surfaces.Elevator up at 1 3/4 in. down at 1 1/2 in. Aileron 1 in up and 3/4 down.
Rudder at 2 1/4 in left and right. i set my expo at -25% on all controls. flaps set at 1 1/4 in down.
Rudder mixed with Aileron at 40%. makes for good coordinated turns. im using a Futaba T7C 2.4 radio.
Theirs a good article in Model Airplane News dated Feb 2008 that reviewed the ASM C-130. They used 4 KMS Quantum
Q226/05 outrunners with 4 Hackers x-40 opto-pro ECSs. batteries are 4 Impulse 3-cell 2400mah LiPos. according to the article
with 3200 mah battery pack you sould get about 4 minutes of fight time.
For me 4 minutes would be white nuckle flying. This airplane need alot of speed to keep flying. im a glow engine guy.
I got 4 OS25fs on my bird and i can fly mine more then 20 minutes with fuel to spare. i Have two header tanks mounted
in the fuselage to feed the engines. the header tanks keep the nacelle tanks full during my flights.
My second ASM C-130 Has GMS 32s and has all the same set up. In the process of putting her together now.
Just my opinion Ill take glow over electric any day.
Also have you had any real time flying twins or any multi-engine Rc airplanes. i started with a Hobbico twin with two OS LA25s for training. its a great twin starter. also i up grade to a C-160 TRANSALL with two LA25s also. that airplane fly like a trainer got over 120
flights so far. then i started to fly the C-130 and man what a difference. still fly with white nuckles but man what a rush.
so by best advice is to start with a smaller twin trainer and after you profected your skills fly the C-130.

Well, I have Great news and bad news.

The Great news is that I flew the first flight of the C-130 tonight.
My setup is:
Axi 2826-10
80 amp ESC (yes way overkill)
4 cell 5000 mah (offerd 6 minute flight time)
X9303 using 7 chanels
Custom nose gear retract mount using a servo to move the gear up and down.
Using slides (my own design) to open and close the main gear doors. A simple and flawless setup.
Lipo batteries located at each motor. No added wire to motor or ESC
2) 2000 mah nimh mounted on the rails on each side of the nose gear.
DB9 connectors to plug the wings in.

Takeoff was in about 175' on short smooth grass using flaps. Nose wheel lifted and then the mains.
With my setup I needed slight down and left trim adjustment.
One pass then I retracted the gear. It looked great.
Flight lasted 6 minutes. Setting up for landing was gear down then flaps. I made it a point to keep the speed up at all times.
The plane flew really nice and was very smooth. I am very pleased with the performance. I did not set the mix for rudder and aileron.
I did use both when I made a turn. I plan to setup the mix. I should have video or at least a link to some as our club meeting is tomorrow and we have
one member that always brings a camera and takes videos. I plan to fly this one as much as I do the B-25. So it will be flown a lot.

OH as for the bad news.... I was the only one there so I don't have any pictures or video of the first flight. Sorry! :-)

    I have thought long and hard, and put everything into concideration, and I have come to the conclusion. I am going to rethink my strategy and go Glow.

   For the same price as a electric, I can buy an OS 2 stroke. 15 per servo each engine, and some gas, and im ready to engine run. And where the final knock out blow hit. I dont want to spend 500 + for engines speed controls, batteries, chargers, and all the little things for only 5 minutes of fly time( not to include the hour spent recharging all those batteries). I can buy a little balsa wood hand thrown glider for a buck at the toy section and get 3- 4 minutes fly time. (depending how hard you throw it)

   So im off to the hobby shop to go get some engines and gas. I guarantee I will need some help getting them set up. If anyone has some suggestions, dont hesitate to send them.

    I truely appreciate all the help and advice everyone has sent. Please keep them coming.

Hi Rockinmarine.

What engines are going for. I recommend putting OS 25FXs or GMS 32s. Also i recommend installing header tanks in the fuselage to carry more
fuel. i have two 10oz thank that feeds the left and right side engines seprately. works real good. my flights lasted more then 20 minutes.

I like the suggestion for the fuselage tanks. Could you give some suggestions on how you set it up and where you mounted them?  And if you have some pictures, I would love to see them.

What i'll do is take some pictures and post them. i'll in the procees of putting together my second ASM C-130 now and
i'll take pictures of the building process.

i have one more question. Looking at the picture for the manual for the plane it shows a glow engine installed upside down. But from everything I read about glow engines, they are all mounted upright so the fuel level on the carb is even with the pickup from the tank. Is this correct ?

Just give them time to load.
No aileron/rudder mix was used in either flight. But, I will be adding the mix as I did use a lot of rudder when turning.

Man what a beautiful flight. Just finished watching the videos and she flys perfect. Mixing the rudder and ailerons will make her fly scale on

Ok, I went to the hobby shop and OS does not make the 25FX. And the GSM would have to be special ordered. But I did find MAGNUM XL 28's. Does anyone know anything about these ? Are they decent ? They also recommended a 9X6 prop. So I grabbed some of those. If anyone has some help or info about these motors. Please let me know. I wont install them unless I get a thumbs up. Or take them back to the store.

I justed checked Tower Hobbies website and i cant belive they discontinued the OS 25FXs. the replacment is the 0S 25AX.
They have the GMS 32Ss in stock. thier about 65 dollars apiece. Im glad i got all of mine when i did.
Im not sure about the Magnum XL 28s and how they preform. I know with the props i run on the GMS 32s they run at wide open at 14,500 rpms
with 10x4 APC props and pull all most 5 lbs of thrust ea. Times that by 4 and you have almost 20lbs of thrust. thats plenty to fly this airplane.
My other C-130 weighted in at 22 lbs.
Hey Rockinmarine i set my engines off to the right of center. i dont like them inverted,they do flood out real easy that way.

I think I recall two cans of diet coke falling from the fridge when I got to the field and went in there to get a drink.
I picked them up, put one back and tapped the top on the other one and opened it. (Tapping the top will stop most of the spray)
It sprayed out a few drops and it just so happens I was at the rear of the trailer and was standing beside the C-130. A few drops hit the fuselage but no where else.
So I guess you could say 2009 Diet Coke (Maybe the guy mixing the diet coke batch had some grapes for a snack. If he did they would have been vintage 2009)

The strongest thing I drink is Diet Coke.

Another update to the ASM C-130.

As you can see by the pictures. I wear a back brace and getting down to put batteries in is proving to be to much on me.

I am not the first to mount the batteries in the center of the fuselage. But, I thought I would share the way I plan to do my battery tray.

My idea is to make battery changes simple and allow lots of air flow around the batteries.

Below is a quick look at what I have done so far. I have test fit the rack on the rails and I am now ready to glue it together.

The bottom of the battery tray is 1/4" plywood. The sides and top are 1/8" aircraft plywood.

It flys great! I am very pleased with it so far.

I fly at 2 clubs and want to add brakes before I fly it at the second club. A smooth runway will take longer to stop and that club has only 300' of runway.

At the moment I am working hard to make installing batteries easy. Hints the simple battery tray I designed, cut and just finished installing.
CNC being another of my hobbies really comes in handy a lot.
