story time:
my ultra sport 60 was test flown in late febuary 1988, my son was 5. mine started life as a trike cause mike, matt, and I flew in formation and that was what we decided, after a few years they had moved on so I switched to a tail dragger. I bend my own gear so I could make them ~ 2 in longer I switched mine to electric in 2012/13, soon after my son did his. we used different equipment and mine was faster this could not stand! so his got the same motor and esc as mine and we were pretty much =. then a year later he showed up with retracts on his, and it achieved his stated purpose 'to be faster than dad!"
since then, including this weekend he has had to leave early (before dad) because the retracts caused problems many times. this weekend was hilarious! on landing he is rolling out and tail down and it goes over on the nose, then I see the far wheel rolling out from this in front of the plane. having flown retracts since the 70's I know that means he's done for the day. I have lots of planes with retracts, non fly below 50 degrees. lest the CTE gods reach down and smite thee. in the cold everything shrinks including axles (it was ~42 degrees F when we were flying), my us60 had been retightened in below 32 degrees F so I know it good. he tells me i'm full of shhhhhhaving cream. my us60 is a for fun plane, or if something is just escaping me, lets work it out plane, so it is built to the KISS principals.

motion rc retracts are cheep and reliable so they would get the nod if I did retracts. but in my hanger the ultra sport is a fly in anything plane so it has fixed gear and kiss is the concept. that is because I have all those scale planes so I need one that still flies like them but does not have the complexity.
u may want something different.

Cowling Question for the Brotherhood!
Pardon my jumping into your brotherhood.
~15-20 years ago, I had 2 Great Planes 40s (and a 60 at one point)
I was cleaning out and had an almost new extra kit (in the box) and sold it to a nice young man (and gave him a busted up plane as spares, plus a bunch of other goodies). Wanted to give someone else the pleasure of flying the Ultra Sports!
The only problem... I must have robbed the new kit and now there is NO COWLING!
Great Planes support told me they no longer have any parts, and that I should try and connect with RC forums.
Does anybody know how I might find a cowling for the Ultra Sport 40?
I found a cowling on (KingCobraOfFlorida dot com <-- I cannot post URLs) that looks "similar" and it is for the Ultra Sport 46/EP ARF kit-- I wonder if it would do the trick?
Thanks in advance for any pointers on how to deal with a missing cowling in a kit ;-)

The cowling is built up in all but one of the UltraSports. Could it be an UltraSport 40+? The Plus did have a cowl that was included but I don’t think it was fiberglass. There are still a few guys that make cowls and canopies. If the Plus is what you have, someone will know who you can call
Good luck

Thanks for that clarification, Bob.
The Ultra Sport 40 kit that I sold was an ARF. It showed the cowling on the box photo and it does list the part number on the GPMA website.

the built up ultrasport has a ply annular ring (basically the size of the spinner) then chunks of 1/2 balsa spanning the distance between the annular ring and the firewall. then they put 1/2 triangle stock in the 2 corners on the engine side of the cowl and whittle away anything that does not look like it belongs. that is a very easy way to build a cowl.

Those two are the ones I remember best. I have done a couple of twin engine Super Sportsters, but no Ultra Sports. I would recommend that you increase the wing span by one bay on each end and increase the size of the vertical tail by the same percentage. I would not recommend making it a tail dragger. Look for the RCM Plans for the Twin Super Sportster and use the same style of engine nacelles. And please post photos when you finish it.

US 1000 Decals
If not, they're easy enough to make.
Scale up what you want.
Load it to a thumb drive.
Buy a few sheets of laser decal paper (or ink jet)
Head down to your local DIY stationery and print out.

Greetings from Norway!
Please count me in
Ultra Sport .40 with an OS .70 Surpass. Bought the kit back in 1996 (approx). Maiden flight in 2003. Have been resting in my attic since 2008 and until this spring. Flies beautifully!
My son "posing" at the US40 on both pictures. He is getting into the RC now and quite a great immediate pilot, but I keep the US40 for myself

That’s a great picture! My dad and I are both building UltraSports. He has the 40 kit from Great Planes that he bought in the early 90’s. I’m building a short kit of the 60 from RCM plans. Since he’s retired, he is making much better progress than me! He recently completed the wing with retracts. I have only partially completed 1 wing panel. I haven’t been able to get my 16 yr old son into it. Happy flying!

I've built a few over the years. My first plane in '94 was the blue 40 size ARF with retracts and I loved it. Built a 40 kit in the late 90s and then another 60 size kit about 7 years ago that was built as a 7S electric. I added some strut covers to the retracts and they make a nice whistle in the air. She is still flying to this day.

I
This is my ultrasport 40 I built as a kid
I had an Ultrasport 40 as a kid, and now have an Ultrasport 60 I’m going to build. Is anyone running the YS80FZ in the 60? Will be using retracts also. Looking at the YS115S as the other option (have that in another 60 size plane and it’s ballistic, but looking at the 80 as an option for this build)

Not enough weight added to account for the increase in speed which is substantial.. I think the wing incidence could have changed due to needing new pins in the leading edge to mate with the fuselage. Can anyone tell me what the incidence should be? I purchased the airplane from an estate and received the manual but not the plans. It is the 40 size kit..

Ok, so I ended up ordering some Monokote platinum and aluminium (with chrome for the trim). I believe that’s what the colours are.
Now I’m about to start the build, I’d actually like to build the 40 as well.
Does anyone make an Ultrasport 40 short kit with the Canopy and plans? (I’ve got the 60 full kit that I’ll be building first)
