i have the Cortex and have it a 3 position for 2 different stability settings and off position. The jet handles so good I don't use the Gyro unless it is really windy and then I use it for landings. Nice to have when it is windy but have it on a on/off switch to see what you prefer.

I know this has been asked before but can't find it with the search engine we're given. We're flying the 1/6 Thunderbird with a JetCat 140RX. Has good power but wanting to upgrade to a JC 180 RX we have sitting around. Will the pipe handle this or are we tempting fate? Tam can make one easily but I've noticed a bunch of people flying this plane with more powerful engines. Just don't know if these people put in a more reinforced pipe or flying with the stock one.

I saw one fly at Joe Nall two years ago with a 180 engine and it was really something. According to the gentleman who owned it and he is somewhat well known in the model community, all he modified was converting the smoke oil tanks to fuel.
I have one with a JC 180RXi installed but it's not been flown yet. Part of my reason for the bigger engine is that our field elevation is 4500'ASL which really causes density altitude issues in the summer so bigger engines are the norm around here rather than the exception.
When I ordered the thing from Patty she didn't say anything about the engine but Bob called me the next day.... lol He was not very happy about that size engine going into the model until i had the density altitude discussion with him.
Last, the top of the bypass will not fit with the bigger engines but I've not seen anyone report issues with that change.

To gyro or not to gyro
I just purchased a BVM 1/6 F-16 (secondhand) and had a gyro question. This will be my 4th turbine: YA F-15, 60 size F-16, and a BVM Electra converted to a turbine. I have been flying RC for around 20 years and have never owned a plane with a gyro in it. This F-16 comes with a Demon Cortex. The previous owner flew Spektrum, I fly Futaba so I will have to set the gyro up. How many people fly without a gyro? Do I really need it? If I decide to use it, should I just set it up at 30-35% Normal and leave it at that?
Any programming tips?
Thanks

Mine had a P180 in it on the stock pipe
Use the cortex, you will like it.. set the gain to 30% and 40% for a try.. it really makes it stable.
if its a little soft, then tighten up your expos from your normal settings. The idea is not to notice its in there, but it turns off the wind and makes it extremely stable.

Anyway, post in a Cortex thread and give them the transmitter model you have and someone there will help you set it up. Or call Danny at Demon Aero or Aero Panda and he can walk you through it. You will like the smoothness of the gyro as others have stated.
And make sure you have a switch that you can turn it OFF all the way, just in case you ever need to.

Part of the problem may be my Demon Cortex. This is my first experience with a gyro in a plane. I am using a Futaba TX and I am using sbus between the gyro and the RX. The servos are very twitchy (with the gyro on or off). I hooked a couple of servos straight to a RX and the are much quieter. Any ideas?

I can't imagine this being normal. It seems like it would be very hard on your servos and batteries. I have it set for digital servos (which they are), would it be any better at the analog setting.
I don't think I have anything set wrong, but I will probably pull the gyro out before I leave it like this. Any ideas?

As far as the noisy servos.. If you put your gain on a switch, where you can turn it off (red light on cortex), and the servos still jitter, then its not the cortex chattering them. I have also noticed that the PnP birds do have noisy servos, and the airframe amplifies the noise. Take your hand and load them. If they load properly and are steady, I would say you are fine.
IF they are jittering a lot, its possible you don't have the gain set right.. on the cortex, you need to send it 1500 Usec(center position) to get it OFF(red light).. send it ( -30%) for 30% gain on the normal mode (amber light).. what you don't want to see is the green light.
Also, its possible you learned it with too high of movement.. set the plane in Low elevator and aileron and try learning the cortex.. Call for help if needed.. The Cortex is awesome in that application. don't take it out.. you will like it once you get it set up properly. I fly cortex in everything.. It makes everything feel solid.
BVM and Danny knows the settings for the PnP F-16. I just set one up for someone else.
Its possible that you need to turn your update rate down on your futaba system to something like .17 millisecond update rate
