RE: Airworld Hawk Building thread
John, Looks can deceive !
I cut the straight lines with a fine razor saw. The curved parts were simply a series of small stright cuts with a no 11 blade knife OUTSIDE the arc of the actual door corners . The curve of the door "corners " was then sanded in to the exact required shape (a much bigger radius than the kit scribe lines ) Thin glass board was then glued inside the fuselage reveal corners and built up to the surface level with body filler. These corners were then profiled to exactly match the doors themselves. The result, with a little patience, is perfect fits, the best I have ever had. Hope this helps.
Regards,
David

RE: Airworld Hawk Building thread
Thanks David
I couldn't work out what kind of cutting tool you had used for such a good fit, the building up of the fuselage side of the hatch and sanding back explains it!
Best regards
John

RE: Airworld Hawk Building thread
Hi David,
Pic below *just about* shows a quick way of attaching the smoke pod. Seemed fine in flight.
Simply used four "tongues" that slid into slots. Think it would be better if the pod slid into the tounges and then slid backwards so as to be held in position during flight?
Rgds,
Mark

Trust you've tried Brasso? If no good, have a chat with your contacts in the RAAF and see if you can get a bottle of the 'plastic polish' they'll use on canopies...or get hold of some 'Micromesh' abrasive cloth (same stuff that Violett provides in his Metalkote kit)...that's what our guys use on the VC-10s, etc for deeper scratches. If you have trouble finding it, remind me of your address and I'll put some in the post.
Cheers,
Dick

Dick, many thanks for the tips. I'll give then a try, just afew small sctatches to remove.
Mark, great idea, I'll use BVM canopy hooks for the job. Your little package should be with you this week.

David.

RE: Airworld Hawk Building thread
Not really, Dave, the first Hawk is now finished with correct blue and will be geared up shortly but won't be flown until I get back from UK after Xmas. Hawk 2 is structurally finished with quite a few corrections to many small errors in the kit, things like ventral angles, nose doors and scoops and intakes and vents , all helped by yet more photos and measurements taken at St Athan. . This model will hopefully be my JWM entry and as I expect there to be quite afew Hawks there is a need to make an extra good one annd its taking time ! I have been invited to an in season team practice day by one of the Red's pilots for a group photo before the JWM so hope to get some dye from them for coloured smoke !
As the cat is out of the bag I can reveal that the plan is to power Hawk 2 with the new Wren 16kg engine, so a British aircraft, in RAF colours powered by a British Wren engine flown by a British ex RAF pilot who has flown the real Hawk, (but for the Australian team !) nostaligic or what but makes a change from the so usual USAF or USN colours ! Pity Ian Richardson didn't do his new Sabre in RAF Fighter Command or 2nd TAF colours ! RAF camouflage and squadron markings, superb !

RE: Airworld Hawk Building thread
Will anyone be so kind as to provide the dimensions of the vortex generators on each wing? Specifically, the shape, length, and height. Can you also provide the distances from the leading edge, wing root, and spacing? Thank you in advance.

RE: Airworld Hawk Building thread
After damaging the right wing of my Hawk the new wing is almost ready. So if anyone needs an exact colour match for a Red Arrows Hawk I have some red squares available from the crunched wing. This red is the actual paint used by the RAF on its RA Hawks. PM or email me if you need one.

RE: Airworld Hawk Building thread
Hi David, yes they are. Unfortunately the flight looks a bit rushed due to the restricted airspace at North Weald, I'll post some more vid from our local site, when it dries out!
The nav light lenses were formed over the wing tip from the acetate sheet in the kit with a heat gun.
