Reaction 54 Jet Kit

Yes....cutout the boat tail a little to move the PST forward. I cover the entire plane first then drill the engine mounting holes. I drill then cover the wedge with some sticky aluminum foil and silicon between the mount and airframe then. This way if I want to readjust I can just make a thicker one.

I was emailed these pictures this morning, and since this thread has been inactive for a while I decided to post them to inspire anyone still building. The pictures were taken at my club's Giant Scale event in September. Flying season is now over, but I managed to put 25 flights on it so far and am very happy with the way the Reaction turned out.

Even with a P60 this plane jumps into the air - about 10-15m roll out on grass!

Still getting a handle on landing but at least it still comes down in one piece.

Back in May I received pic from a builder who installed a K-100G in his R54. I asked him how he liked that specific combination and he replied:
"It took 14oz of nose weight to balance with the turbine indented into the boat tail about 1/2 an inch, 2 2200mah 2S RCVR batteries and a 3S 4200mah ECU battery as far forward as possible. I'm using a 72oz Kevlar tank. I use the kit tank as an overflow and startup. Bases on the factory spec it looks like the 80G and 100G are the same size and weight. All the cables are just the right length.
"I didn't reduce the max RPM but did pull the throttle back once it cleared the ground. The throttle is set on half expo so I'd say a lot of the flights were at just over half throttle position on the stick. This position provided good steep climb capability for big loops and split S. No way to know what speed was produced at full throttle but it was moving.
"Residual thrust is NOT an issue. I put the gear down and made a pass up wind to ensure all down then flaps on down wind and started bringing the power down till it was at idle just before turn to base. Two of four landings were about 1/3 the way down the runway. The 4th was a little shorter and needed a little power added to flatten out the glide so the sink rate wouldn't get too high. I used the brake only on the first landing because of a stupid error from being nervous...I was a little long and hot and then mistakenly pushed the throttle forward vice the elevator. Still got it stopped before going off the end of the runway.
"On take-off it goes from a dead stop to flying in about 100' or so with partial flaps. The plane weighs in at 18lb with the UAT full."

Thanks guys, I'm about to purchase an engine and I'm hoping to utilize this engine for a Reaction and possible future projects. The 100 gives me more options than an 60 or 80!

i just re-engined my Reaction 54 with a new JetCat 100RX and took it out to fly for the first time in a few years .. the little 100 fits perfectly, and provides very nice power for the plane. The airframe is perfectly capable of handling the power, and most of the flight is at or below 1/2 throttle. Lots of fun to have the plane all decked out with a new motor and the latest (Carsten's ASSI) telemetry systems!
This was my first jet many years ago and after lots and lots of high performance sport jets and scale jets, it's still a blast to take the Reaction out and fly the heck out of it! We clocked 170 mph at full throttle which really surprised me .. but that was off the pitot-static system without a GPS backup to check the calibration. It was nice to have a live readout of remaining fuel in oz .. no guessworks anymore on that :-)

Has anyone grafted a PST fuselage to the R54 wing? Mostly to gain fuel tank space. I am hopping up to R454 with jet munts 90.
Or has anyone expanded the wood fuselage.
I have Mach1's, original jet intakes I think.
Thank you
Charles

With some imagination there's plenty of room for enough fuel to last an M90 10 minutes.

Charles,
I have a Jetsmunt 90 in mine and it's more than enough power. I managed to squeeze in a Dubro 80 oz. tank. That required making the fuse about 1/8" wider in the tank area and moving the rudder & elevator servos to the tail. The tail was made 1 inch wider than plan to accommodate the servos. Additionally I was able to put a 24 oz. smoke tank where the air tank was suppose to go. Everything is a tight fit and in retrospect I wish I had made the whole fuse an inch wider, since I ended up making all new formers anyway.
The details of my build are on pages 130-133 of this thread.

Joe, High horse,
Thank you. My, Mach1's, orig fus is just too nice to cut even with many of his artistic details faded.
I am also looking for a PST fuselage to consider modding to accept R54 wing. I am going to look at Joe's build mod.

By the way , if anyone has a complete wing in flyable condition
for a PST Reaction, please contact me,

I'm not sure if an ARF wing will bolt right onto a kit built R54.

Matt,
Ah, I get it now. It's not the servos that impinged on the tank compartment, it was the push-pull cables. You re-located the servos so the push-pull cables would be out of the way, and you omitted the lite-ply fuel tank compartment top which opened up the entire compartment for more volume. The pictures helped a lot, thanks!
