It helps when reading the manual if you've had previous experience reading 70's era translated spanish to english trials bike manuals
I ran the 82 again today. To my surprise (not really) the intake valve wasn't leaking before the start up but did start leaking once up to running temp. I let it sit for a few hours and the leaking stopped. I started it up and no leaking even when up to temp (again, not surprised). I have found the perfect fix, I put a new fa82 on order. That said, I feel like giving it one more shot so I threw in a set of springs on the engine order. I really don't think the springs will fix it but what the heck, shipping was free and Jim told me to. Lol, just kidding Jim.

so it leaks when it gets hot ! did you check this when the engine was shut off, I mean, if the engine is hot and not running and you turn it over by hand and the valve leaks I would think the spring is not the problem here, so this brings me back to the Seat

Never rule out the obvious; "loses compression when hot"?
Any time compression changes with warm up, check the valve lash.

EDIT: The thing is, if the valve is sticking it may be unmeasureable. Either the leak is not there at all or it's a slight hissing sound with a noticeable drop in compression when rolling the engine over. If the valve is sticking it would be very near the fully seated position and likely the lash difference would measure in 1/10ths. I'd have to do it entirely by feel.

That is the exact point:
A sticking valve will show up in the valve lash setting
Any change that would affect running would very, very likely be reflected in the valve lash . .
Why simply assume and utter " The thing is, if the valve is sticking it may be unmeasureable " ? Not at all a reasonable diagnostic pattern. Better to check and know. A .0002" change would NOT make a radical difference of the type you describe.

just my fact at this moment LOL, for now I would just start that thing, run it up to 6 or 7 grand and let it set running like that for a good half hour, then after the half hour go over and bring it up to full throttle and see what happens, then if it starts it's thing again check the lash

A pity we are all not standing around the bench while you run it...no wait,that could be bad depending on whose drunk the most.The first fa82 was my learning engine years ago and suffered from my learning curve so much that it makes my face go red just thinking about it.Out of the three i own it still pulls the best max rpm,maybe it was the no run in period...

maybe I will try that with my Saito 100, what the Hey, I didn't pay full price for it
,, run it for 15 minutes at 4 grand, then bring it up to 6 grand for 10 minutes then full throttle, you never know till you do it LOLJim

Our customers took our engines out of the shop and straight int use. Race car or street car.
We cut seats with Hall Toledo or Souix seat grinders later with Kwik-way cutters, never lapped them. Honed cylinders to size with a Sunnen CK10 and modern rings sealed well.
I put new engines in planes and fly them.
Hopefully our friend gets his engine sorted out without spending twice the price of a new engine

I just took a large pile of freebies to the Post Office today, Parts I made and a Super Tigre carb. Saturday is about the only chance I get since the PO is closed at the end of my 12 hour workday this time of year.
Anyhow, I took your last message to mean you didn't want it, that is why I ended my response the way I did.
Okay, I will dig it out and ship it next Saturday, sorry about the confusion.

BTW, can you give me an suggestion where to buy tools, I need a new set of Calipers, 1/4x32 Tap, a Drill to go with it, a couple End Mills, and a couple #1 screwdrivers, and smaller Center Drills,, I found all that stuff at Wholesale Tools, but they don't have many Calipers in the price line I want to spend

anyhoo, they really don't have a lot of calipers, but if I have to spend an extra $20 and get every thing I need in one place, so be it for the exra $20

well, they have that 1/4X32 Tap I need for mounting those regulators,, yes I bought a 2nd one, if I can get $40 plus shipping for the carbs that came with them that means I paid $40 for each regulator
but that deal for the Carb and regulator is not up and going any more, Towers has stopped that deal, but you can still get the OS 4-stroke regulator for like $70
