Saito 30 turning Graupner 10 x 6.
Saito 30 turning Graupner 10 x 5.5
I use this little Hobbico since I butchered my thumb and my favorite TNC got left out in the rain. The TNC is dead.

Hey can i borrow that to cut some wing ribs? man that's what you call a saw. They were tough old boys back in the day.Nice fa150 what will you paint it with?
Dave just out of interest my little fa30 turns 10600 with a mas 10x6 on 10%
Righto, what i'd like to ask is does anyone here run data logging in their planes which includes in flight rpm and temps?

The 150 has realy good paint on it just had to give it a cleaning. Once i got the old caster oil loosened up and the valves to close it has awesome competition.
Can’t wait to run this one.

Pete, stout little boogers aren't they, I have never fooled with DATA, the ignition that came with my FG 11 has the tach wire but I haven't used it. In fact I don't even use the stock ignition system, the CH Ignition spark makes a nice loud crack, the stocker makes an almost inaudible spark. A couple of my Spektrum receivers also can log DATA.
Have you ever seen written anywhere exactly what the Initials on the Saito right mounting lugs indicate, such a year, a run of a certain number?

Oh, I just felt dizzy and had to set down, well, truth is, I had a premonition, something tells me Garry just bought a Saito 180 twin

This is the one I have, got it to recondition my deep cycle batteries.
https://www.stanleytools.com/product...e-start/bc25bs
It won't fix a dead one though, once its dead, its dead. My 95 Grand Marquis eats batteries because we don't drive it, and it drains them. I used a battery maintainer, but that killed a battery too.

hopefully I will have no problems with this Solar, I am braking it in slowly, in stages so it wont get too hot.
I checked out the Stanley and Black and Decker chargers, they are nice and set up well, and I like them, but I wanted a charger with less Amp output. to add, most Automatic chargers today will not power-up the clamps if a battery has no voltage in it, but this Solar charger can zap a battery to put some volts in a completely dead battery before charging

Back to data in flight logging.I read some tests years ago that said you gain between 1000 and 1500rpm once in the air.Would that make you re think max rpm ground tuning and if so why,it's a general question for everybody.I have an fa30 that during bench testing would rip it's mas 10x6 prop tips (makes a sound like an at6 texan/harvard prop) at 10600 rpm but never did that in flight. On the other hand my fa115 in the cmpro midget mustang will make a huge booming sound, kinda like a 12ga going off,in a dive at full throttle,i've done that repeatably and the boys love it.My h9 taylorcraft is powered by an fa182 twin and will also howl away on the prop tips full throttle going down wind. So,it would be interesting to be able to look at info like in flight max rpm and cyl head temps, then compare that info to what you get on the ground before the flight.
ps anybody ever come across torque figures for our saito engines ??
I would love to see some in-flight data too. I don't have any telemetry gear, just use my ears. I prop them for under 10k on the ground and all my airframes are too draggy to unload the engine much. My ears tell me I'm never seeing the sunny side of 11k in the air. Then again I don't use high pitch props, typically nothing over 7".

cut and paste url into your browser. Not sure what I'm doing wrong, my links never work here.

most battery maintainer go to trickle when the battery is fully charge, you need to find one that actually shut off when the battery is fully charged, then comes back on after the voltage comes down. I have read some complaints about Battery Tender and Schumacher over charging, even the CTEK that come in Vett's and LambO's have complaints..

The other problem is, even the chargers designed to disconnect often malfunction and fail to do so.
YES, in order to avoid boiling batteries dry, the charger must disconnect, also what acdii was describing. We now use a timer to enable an auto matic charger but only once per week for 1 hour. That just happens to be the number that works well for us.
You may recall I mentioned that every charger I use is run through a timer. That includes all my RC related battery charging. I made up a few programmable, digital timers that are very versatile. You can program them to shut off after 1/10 second or 9999 hours. You can then program them to come on again after a programmed off period or simply stay off. A very useful device.
I made that timer after walking away from a set of nicads that I was high rate charging and forgetting them. I went back to the garage and there was soot everywhere. The batteries were in the middle of a 2 inch maple top work bench and originally in an ABS case. They had burned badly scorching their way deeply into the table but luckily, the fire did not spread. Now every charger and even my soldering station runs with a time limit.
When I get home tonight, I will ty to remember taking a picture. The timers use an Omron timer that has several useful modes of operation. I simply added a case with switches, outlets and relays to make things useful and easy.
Saito content :
Yep, got another 182D on the way

My battery tenders do have an led that indicates when the charger goes into "battery maintenance mode" but nothing to indicate if it ever turns off completely when needed. Hmmmm
Something to note when looking at Torque & HP graphs above is that the 62 and 72 share the same cam gear. That cam appears to be much better suited for the 62, having a much flatter torque curve, allowing it to run a much wider range of props and achieve hp at higher rpms. Now here's the scary thing, the fa82 uses the same cam! This may explain why both of my 82s are so prop sensitive.
