Bill, are ya married..... with all those planes?
About the breather tubing that goes all the way out the back of the plane - didn't I see a maximum length recommended for that somewhere? I guess it would just take a little longer to get the after run oil injected in there.

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
I bought a .56 when I first got into the hobby to see what four-cycle model engines were all about. Fell in love instantly!
The .56 is currently on a 1/6 Cub. I have a .65 in a World Models Super Frontier Senior. I have a .91 waiting for a home. There's a freshly broken-in 1.50 sitting next to my almost-ready Dave Patrick Ultimate bipe.
When I found out how much I liked four-cycle engines, I also bought a Magnum .52FS. Not a good thing. It was replaced under warranty. The warranty replacement then had its cylinder head replaced under warranty. No more Magnums for me.
I also bought an O.S. .70 Surpass II. When I found out it weighs more than my Saito .91, I didn't have the heart to mount it on a plane. I would like to try a Y.S. at some point, but can't see spending the money right now.
If I ever become financially well-off, I will certainly start buying Saito multi-cylinder engines!
Good flying,

Mr. Robison--What's the displacement and weight on that gorgeous 14-cyl? That's much too pretty to hide in a cowl, but I'll bet a pair (or four) would sound incredible at full song. What full -size 3 cylinder engines can you name? I'm sure there are more, but the only one I can think of myself was the Lenape-Papoose 40hp that was on early J-2 and J-3 Cubs.

Yes Sir, Mr. Hobbs Sir. You are right sir.
So I wont say that 14 cylinder Seidel is 142 cc and I also wont say the Lawrence L2 engine was a three cylinder radial rated at 60 hp.
No, sir, I wont say that at all.
Haw. Pulling your chain, Dave.
Buit you are right.
Bill.

It's "three for a nickel" now. I have broken 3 of these pipes off of my Saito 100s. They have each broken in the same place and all while the planes were in the air. The muffler fortunately has remained dangling from the pressure line each time and I have not lost one.
Has anyone else had this problem? When I spoke to the Horizon rep he said he knew of them loosening but, not breaking.
So far Horizon has been good about getting a new one right out but, when it happens the day ends early at the field unless I had brought other planes to fly. My Saito's have all been great other than this issue.

Maybe you are putting the muffler end into the engine and the engine end into the muffler? Sorry, couldn't resist it.
Only two things come to mind. Least possible is running lean, and the high temperature is contributing to the failure. The other is imbalance of the prop, and spinner if used.
Sorry I can't come up with anything better for you. Failures like that are all but unheard of. Muffler failure yes, but not the heavy steel head pipe.

Mine won't seem to stay tight at the muffler. I am afraid of tighten so tight that it comes apart like that. What did horizon say to the loosening fix.

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
OK, I like the idea of a Saito thread, but isn't this loooonnnnnggggg thread defeating the pupose of a board? There's no way that I'm going to work my way through 16 (current count) pages of mesages to see if there's something that's of interest.
Why not a sub-board (under 'glow engines') strictly for Saitos? I'm assuming that there isn't a manufacturer's support board (like for YS, etc.) for Saitos because of a lack of support. Is this the case?

You make a few good points Will Robinson. I run Powermaster 30% Heli. fuel and after thinking about it for sometime, I think it is the same plane with all 3. All of my props are well balanced which is more than I can say for some of my clients. There may not be enough outlet cut out of the cowl. I am going to enlarge the outlet hole in front of the pipe where it connects to the motor. Engine is definitely not running lean and there is not excessive vibration. I have tended to run this thing at 3/4 to full throttle most of the time as I like the speed.

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
I have a SAITO 65GK, 72, 91, and 100Gk. The 65 was on a SlowPoke Sport 40, that was a blast to fly until it met it's expiration date, will soon be in a Hanger 9 Cub (purchased new in the box, old stock at a hobby shop). The 72 is in a Excelleron 50, great combination. The 91 was aquired used and is looking for a home. The 100 is new and is going in a Pica Jungmiester. I need a muffler for the 65, the end unscrewed and fell off in flight, it now makes a poping sound at idle, kinda cool.
P.S. We rode out hurricane Rita in our home, we had at least 100 MPH winds. I have no structural damage, only 3 large trees down, 200' of wood fence down[], and a yard full of limbs. Our electricity was off for a week[&:]. The parish is slowly coming back to life. I managed to make one flight with the Excelleron at the local airport yesterday.

Glad youi came through OK. We've been hit twice here since last October. I ran from Ivan but I sat Dennis out right here, as you just did Katrina.
Incidentally, you are number 80, RWLEWIS-SR.
Bill.

The Saito .45 MKII
Fuel----WildCat 10% Premium Extra
Fox Miracle Plug-- it came with no plug
MKII means it has a two needle
Prop--Graupner 12x5
I had to laugh at myself, I was so proud of that idle speed after 35 minutes of run time, until I noticed the Tach setting. The Tach. reading is richened down from 10,240. It was spitting rain and very humid. I'm glad I didn't post that idle speed as Gospel. That would have been downright embarrasing.
PS, this one came with Phillips head screws in the rocker covers, as you see that changed very quickly, never had one come like that before. I'll ring it and my 2.20 out some more when its not raining.

All you have to do is say you switched props when you checked the low speed.
Haw.
Bill.

Bill, its a 12x5 Graupner, it's about the right load but has excellent flywheel action, can you see how much the end of the exhaust pipe is crimped in? It's a surprising amount. You can hear the exhaust pretty good at full song but the prop is louder than the exhaust at idle.

[b]Dave:
That is indeed the earliest style exhaust for the singles, no longer supplied for the singles, but they are still used on the twin and multi cylinder engines as stock equipment so they can be gotten. I'm sure you also noticed the strange inlet pipe.
Looks like you got a good one. Now find another and mount the pair on a TwinStar.
Or you could build a ten foot span Tigercat, and mount your Abitar engine on one side and the Conley on the other.
GOTTA GET A TWIN!!!
Bill.
