Hey guys I have a 10yr old who is flying propjets and is begging me for a ducted fan jet so he could fly at the local airshows that don't allow propjets. He would like to get one of these and converted to ducted fan. Any Ideas of what engine and fan unit would need to be used. Any setup ideas. maybe a turbax fan?

The header is an old MACS two inch rise header that was cut 2" away from the flange and mated with
a 90 degree side exhaust header that had the flange removed. I had to carefully measure everthing to
get the right distance/angles to mount the pipe and add the silicon coupling(s).


The Pipe is a 45-50 size engine MACS pipe. The normal .61 pipe is too long.
This is truly a hybrid setup. (61 long stroke, 10x8 prop, 45-50 TP) I tried to tune this setup the
best I could, but its far from perfect. I'm currently taching 14k with this setup.

The red nose cone on the pipe is made of two aeropoxied 1/4 plywood plates sandwiched between
balsa outer shell that's glassed with polyester resin (super hard and heat resistant) and painted with K&B.
A 4/40 set scew was added to secure it to the pipe and an exahust channel was drilled out to allow the
the exhaust to exit directly downward. Really looks cool to see the exhaust smoke come out this way and
keep the plane really clean. I had this setup on a Balsa USA Enforcer I owned back in 1990.

I was thinking about ordering the white and blue one and making it electric, but I see they are sold out again.

Isn't this interesting. I received my 2nd kit thus far, Check out the difference in the wheels. The larger wheels are from the first one, more ground clearance... From the manual it appears that the smaller wheels are what is correct. I also noticed that some of the white nylon parts are now black. I'm sure there are bins and bins of interchangealbe parts in the kit factories.
Anyone have an idea how many of these have been produced. I wonder if it is more than BVM thus far.

Here are some pictures of my Bob Cat. I'm using a WeMoTec HW-730 EDF, Nue 1521/1.5Y motor, CC HV 110 AMP ESC, 9S TP 4600 ma Extrem LiPo pack. During the first run up I was pulling 70 AMP at 2245 WATTs. Airframe weight minus batteries is 7 lbs, flying weight should be about 9-10 lbs.

What servos are you guys using?? The elevator hookup looks a bit hokey...thinking maybe one 5125 right in the stab......

I have stuck with a Thundertiger 46 pro to keep down the weight (6.6 lbs), I have JR539 servos on the Ailerons, Throtle and Nose Gear Steer. On the Rudder and Elevator I have gone with JR381 mini servos (Ball Raced 4.2kg/cm) about 65 oz for half the weight of a 539. I placed the Elevator servo in the stabiliser. Trim wise I did'ny like the green nose so I rubbed it back carefully with 1200 grit wet and then gave it a light buff, the whit is very thin so take your time if you go this way so you dont have to repaint the nose, I have also removed the red trim and added the Skull and Cross Bones to the Fins. I have almost finished a sliding canopy frame (servo operated) should get a few looks at the field, if the test fly goes ok on sunday I am fitting a dummy intake pod under the wing where I plan to fit the retracts, I want to check if the pod will effect the flight performance before going to far with the work. If I like this model I am going to take a plug off it and make up a full carbon fibre unit, (Fuse, Tail booms, Stabiliser and Wing) shoud lose a few lbs.[img][/img][img][/img][img][/img][img][/img]

Noddy181, I like your elevator servo idea, I will do that also. I'm in the prosess of fully sheeting the wings and glassing them as well as the booms, I will install retracts also. I found after about a dozen flight there was a clear film on the blue covering that was peeling off, it started to look a little hokie so I pulled all the covering off.

Thanks, I am going to use this one as the test bed, and buy another one for experiments like what you are doing, I am going to make the molds as i think taht it will put on too much weight as the chinese tend to use balsa substitutes which seem to be much heavy to start. I am planing to use carbon fibre and epoxy, as I work as the purchasing manager for Devcon in Australia i will have a good source of technical knowledge for this job, let me know how much weight you gain by glassing the wings and the booms.

I'm a dyed-in-the-wool fossil fuel guy, but I am looking at all options for power. Has anyone gone electric with less than 2000 watts? What kind of set up??
My limited understanding is that an outrunner will swing a big prop very slowly and won't get much speed.. an in-runner spins a small prop very fast but will still need to be geared down....

Hi guys. I am also in the process of putting together this airplane. Here's a list of the modifications I have done. Let me know if any of you have more things that should be done.

-I had to make a new hole for the wing tube on the right side. The hole was drilled to far back. The wings would not fit. I used some sand paper around the wing tube and sanded the hole until the wing tube was perpendicular to the fuselage. Then I filled in with epoxy. See picture.
- I put a JR mini servo in the stab for the elevator.
- I made the wings detachable by drilling a hole in each end of the wing tube. I had to reinforce the area where the screw goes into the tube both inside and outside the tube. Used hardwood. See picture.
- I replaced the stock anti rotation pin with some short carbon fiber tubes. I reinforced the inside of the fuselage walls with hardwood blocks. See picture.
- I have installed a hook on each wing half in front of the anti rotation tubes. These will be used to hold the two wing halves in place sidewise. (in addition to the screws in the tube) Using either rubber bands or strips. See Picture.
- I would like to install retracts, but I want to see how she flies before spending more time and money.
- I am using an O.S. 91 fx with a stock muffler to see how that goes. I will shorten a MA 14x7 3-blade pusher prop.
- I will be repainting the fuselage a bit. The green anti-glare is a little too ugly. I’ll use some more red.
-I’m using two TH high torque mini servos for the rudders. Two Futaba 3152 for ailerons. Two TH Std. BB for nose wheel and throttle.

Has anyone flown this bird with a 45 or 90-size 2-stroke yet? I have seen it with a turbine, but what about a glow engine? Exited to see how she performs. Can anyone give me a link?

I maidened mine yesterday, setup is as follows

Thunder Tiger 46 pro with standard muffler
Have used both 10/7 and 11/7 APC props
All up weight is just short of 7.0 lbs

The model flys nicely with this setup, I had a TT Pro 61 but when I did the trial balance I needed another 10 oz of lead in the nose, (the 46 needs 4 oz of nose weight, the 61 need close to 15 oz) when I looked at the motor specs and available props I chose to go with the 46. The 61 weighs 10 oz more plus the extra nose weight is an extra 1 1/4 lbs which I thought would outway the extra 0.3 bhp that the 61 has over the 46, also the 46 is quoted at 16000 rpm against the 61's 15000.
Other mods I have done are a single servo in the stab for the elevator as you have done, I have reinforced the landing gear blocks as shown previously in this forum, I have also reinforced the mounting plates in the booms, the back ones with some square hardwood epoxied in and on the fronts I zapped in a sub former about 1/2 inch back from the plate so I could pour in 30 minute epoxy up to a level flush with the sides of the booms, if you do this put some silicone grease on the nylon bolt and thread it through untill it bottoms out on the balsa top sheeting, that way the epoy will be threaded and you will be able to get the bolt out. That ugly green bit can be very carefully rubbed off with 1200 wet paper, let the paper do the work and dont use a lot of presure and keep the water fresh, when its off use some buffing compound, the buffing compond will also remove the overspray that seems to be on the model, I plan on retracts and also getting the ports modified on the 46 and fitting a custom header and pipe to get some more RPM, it is certainly a nice model to fly, the wing loading is 22.5 oz sq/ft and landings are quick, I would'nt like to go the 61 as I think the overall package would suffer (Higher Wing Loading), but thats my thoughts.

By the way we fly at about 800 ft above sea level so we get pretty good performance out of our motors, I dont use nitro and the model climbs out vertical for at least 100 ft before it starts to drop its nose

here we fly at an altitude of about 200 to 300 ft and most of the guys fly with home made fuel with very bad quality methanol..
