Default Scuffing piston rings

Hey fellas, can you give me ideas on how to scuff a glossy piston ring and what grit of sandpaper to use? The ring is mostly shiny around its perimeter with only a couple of small areas still showing a faint representation of the original grinding marks. My thought is to use adhesive backed 100 grit paper adhered to a clamped down precision machinist square and do the work on my surface plate with the ring lying on a piece of 1/4" precision ground plate. The idea is to apply light pressure against the paper in a circular sweeping motion and take care to not sand across the ring gap. Am I on crack? Is there a better way?

Thanks

Lonnie

I personally would not touch it.

Compression is weak, valve train is good and no leaks. It's not a Saito and the OEM ring is only available from Germany. The engine is not worth the cost of the ring but worth trying to scuff it. Thanks for your input though.

Someone posted somewhere that a guy on ebay has picked up where Bowman left off but I forget who the vendor is.

Edit: Found him. Gaviscool is the ebay vendor. He is swarf monkey on RCG. Prices are good and people have nothing but good things to say about his rings. I still want to try scuffing first, just to see if I can make it happen.

By all means scuff. 400 wet or dry is fine, just break the glaze. As little as it takes.

I got some m3 screws of the needed lengths together for that 50 you are reworking .

I assumed they ran auto extinguishers even back in ww2 ?? because if i remember right the pilot on that audio says he has to get back 'and blow an engine out'

Dave that tharp is an unusual looking tail dragger but to me it looks ugly with the engine mounted like that.

Lonnie scuffing the ring with 320 or 400 grit wet and dry as gary said should break the shine off the outer surface of the ring. We use wet and dry sandpaper of various grades to sand cars before and after painting and i find that if you use soapy water or white spirits/wd40 etc it lubes the paper so it does not clog up, thereby increasing the amount of work you get out of it. Good luck.

Guys i planned to do a bench run after work, just finished making up a fa115 but it's too cold to leave my fingers behind the engine and tune it. Even the official gummint weather people are saying this is an unusual weather event here. Are we now in danger of slipping into an early ice age ?

Don't most people scuff the liner or are you advocating scuffing both, Thanks

We have had an unusual amount of rain this year. At least 4 times we have had flooding. In fact for the first time since I moved here in 2001 the road was flooded down 1/4 mile from my house. I am keeping a constant watch in my shop to get any water before it can get to my work area. Don't want any of my Saitos to be in danger.

Usually they have four tanks or one per engine.
Did you ever see the de Havilland flying boat with 18 four strokes on it. it had one tank per engine

Crunchy, congrats on that 50GK.

Dave, I've never heard of anyone scuffing a chromed cylinder. That's some pretty hard stuff.

Me neither too, On installing old the piston in a new 82 cylinder, the ring I had in a package of several I got from w8ye has a black edge. It's new and fits perfectly I am not going to touch it. I don't think it's a Saito ring.

Those 50's are addictive.

yes, I posted it about a year ago. it's a crazy-cool plane, love it. but I don't understand why he did not use Saito 100s, they would turn larger props and therefore he could fly it at a lower throttle setting. and, if 1 or 2,,,,, or 3 engines flamed-out he would had more power to get it around to land. never the less the plane is just too-cool

wait wait wait, 12 Saito 100Ts would be even better

Jim
Saito owners have longer strokes and larger pistons

I need help.
My Saito 82B vibrates too much with 14x4W propeller.

My Hangar 9 Twist 60, without wings, vibrates so much that I'm afraid it will shatter. Which propeller do you recommend? Thanks a lot

FP welcome. It sounds like you are running way to rich saito's are silky smooth for the most part. A 14x4 prop is on the small side for the fa82, i usually run apc 14x6 pattern props and you can hover on those.

Dave can you post a pic of the fa82 ring, what brand is it?

Crunchy does that dornier float plane run gas two strokes, it sure sounds like 20 of your best mates have rolled up at your house to mow the lawn with weed wackers but i admire that guys scale building effort and he flew it well too. Can you imagine crashing that many hours detailed work? it would take you just as long to sweep the parts up.

ps how many here like me who cannot understand spending heaps of money and hours on a scale classic only to fit a weed wacker to it?

I have two 82b engines, they both vibrate more than any other saito engine that I have run. The APC 14x4W prop should work well for your Twist. Make sure your Prop and Spinner are perfectly balanced. If the engine is new or still breaking in you will need to lean the low speed needle as the engine gets more and more broken in. As Pete mentioned, a rich running engine will vibrate more than one which is properly tuned.

Note: Without the ballast weight of the wings the fuselage will vibrate more than with the wings attached.
