Default RE: Official Tamiya TT-01 Thread

Hey guys, I have a Tamiya TT-01 myself, and have been very happy with it for a long time. Right I have the aluminum drive shaft, Bearing set, and a Chameleon 2 pro motor. Last spring I was running it and heard funny noises, so I turned it toward me and drove it back. When I got back into my room to check it out, I found the spur and pinion gear(yes metal) to be stripped. Not sure what happened, any ideas? It is a fixed mesh situation so not much I can do about that. Anyways I wondering where does everyone but Tamiya stuff? Tower doesnt seem to be the best place for it. I want some hop ups for it such as shocks, what can you reccomend? Im also looking for another kit so a couple links would really help put me in the right direction. Thanks in advance, heres an old pic.

I've been pretty happy with Tower's selection and extremely happy with their shipping department. I've also ordered directly from Tamiya USA, and hit up as many LHSs as I can in my travels. A lot of folks here like RCMart and buying off eBay, but I'm not as trusting of ordering from Hong Kong, primarily because I'm not in any one place for longer than a week or two - I travel for work all over North America and haul my TT-01 stuff with me, so anything I order pretty much has to be shipped in via either next-day or second-day air.

YMMV, of course...

There are a couple of possibilities to strip the pinion & spur gears:
[ul][*] Incorrect meshing of the gears. You must make sure that the motor screws are oriented in the correct slots (A, B, C, D) that match your specific pinion/spur combo. [*] The pinion and spurgears have different pitch. If this is the case then you would have heard a fairly loud buzzing noise (like a high speed shaver) when you were driving it. The normal gear sound is a soft whine. Tamiya has plastic spur gears, so the metal one you have is probably not Tamiya "standard".
[/ul]

I buy all my stuff online at rcMart and eBay. I am very happy with rcMart, usually I get my stuff within 1 week of ordering (Hong Kong to Australia).

As for shocks, the Tamiya shocks are pretty good, but pricey. I have several TT-01s and use http://www.rcmart.com/catalog/rc-dam...th=595_744_708. I bought several sets of these and each pair is setup differently (spring, oil and piston holes) so that I can quickly change out a pair of shocks during racing/tuning without having to take the shock apart.

Have a look at the rcMart site for kits http://www.rcmart.com/catalog/default.php

Hey thanks man for the help, I really appreciate it. Hopefully you can answere a few more questions. First off, I wasnt all that clear. The gears I was using WERE the stock ones, and in the right holes as well. The pinion was metal, not the spur, sorry for confusion. Also, I have had this car for a year and ran it hard and never heard any wierd noises until that one day. So I dont know why it stripped, but I figure once it started, and with me running it hard on the dirt road, it killed in in one run.

Now as far as buying, I think I may try RC mart, they seem pretty good. Does anyone know how long it takes to ship to the US? The only thing that really sucks is they dont have any Tamiya AV pinion sets for the TT-01, so I will have to make two seperate orders which I was trying to avoid. Id rather just make one. And I was planning on getting those shocks, they seem really good for the price. I think im going to hold of on another kit as well for now, I have 5 cars/trucks so It should hold me over. Plus when I go back to school(aviation school) everyone flys planes and I might pick up one of those.

Now I have bearings, alum. shaft, new wheels/tires, and new motor so what else do you think I should upgrade next, if anything?

Heres an old vid I made, for any begginers wondering if they should get a tt-01, there pretty durable and plenty fun.

If you use a plastic motor holder, it can warp when the motor gets too hot. This may cause the meshing to be off.

As far as upgrading, it depends very much on what you want to do. Your setup is pretty good for bashing around. I race and have upgraded to the hilt, I have all hopups except alu upper arms and easily keep up with much more expensive cars that are hopped up to the hilt too.

Well I mean I like it how it is, but would be willing to upgrade if it made it tougher and/or handle better, so Im not sure what upgrades that would be. I feel like everything is pretty durable as it is so im not sure. Maybe I will get the metal motor mount though, rcmart doesnt have pinions though right? Im not just missing it? Thanks

Just looked at the video. I don't think that there is anything you can buy to make the car tough enough to cope with crashing like that :-(
The plastic parts are flexible and should stand up to crashes better than metal/alu parts and they are cheap to replace. I use alu parts to reduce flexing to make the car more responsive, but at the same it becomes more "brittle" and less forgiving. If I hit something hard (luckily that does not happen often) then the metal parts just rip out the plastic.

The main problem I find with the TT-01 is the steering slop. I reduced that by using:
[ul][*] metal steering kit http://www.rcmart.com/catalog/rc-tt0...th=595_744_708 with ball bearings, [*] metal knuckle arms http://www.rcmart.com/catalog/rc-tt0...th=595_744_708 [*] universal shafts http://www.rcmart.com/catalog/rc-tt0...th=595_744_708. You may have to remove some of the drive shaft cup axle to fit them, as I think that they are designed to go with the one-way diff or ball-diff. [*] metal lower arms http://www.rcmart.com/catalog/rc-tt0...th=595_744_708[*] adjustable upper arm set http://www.rcmart.com/catalog/rc-tt0...th=595_744_708[*] turnbuckle tie rods http://www.rcmart.com/catalog/rc-tt0...th=595_744_708 with red rubber O-rings
[/ul]

This is a racing setup and you may not need all of it.

The metal pinions at rcMart are at http://www.rcmart.com/catalog/pinion...3_450_924.html

Well, thanks again for the answeres. Its helping alot, especially that you helped me find the pinions that makes things a lot better. I know that nothing I can do can make it stand up to the huge airs and crashes like that, I dont jump it like that anymore anyways. It did seem to hold up well enough though, knock on wood. I mostly treat it as a rally car, and I like to race my friends in the dirt. The problem is the car bounces around a lot and it takes a lot of skill and practice to steer on a bumpy dirt road at high speeds. I figure some suspension upgrades and maybe some steering will help it a little, I know a lot cannot be done however. Either way its a fun car and I enjoy it, I plan to get another kit for just on road and keep this one to bashing. Thanks for the help though.

In my racer I use a rear ball diff and front one-way to accellerate fast out of corners. In my rally TT-01 I locked the rear diff with super glue (glued the two gears onto the case) and plan to install a front one-way when I have the spare cash.

It is one of the pinions you can use. The attached picture shows all possible combinations. The picture was compiled by RaceBucks. Go to http://www.rctech.net/forum/electric...-forum-28.html post 835.

Thanks a lot, Im getting a metal motor mount, yeah shocks, tamiya hard dampner oil(unless you can suggest a differnt one), The spur set, and the Tamiya AV pinions. I figure that should be good enough on that chassis for a while, time to work on another.

No problems.

Use the high viscosity oil on smooth tracks as it reduces the damping action. If you want to rally, use light oil, soft springs and 3 hole piston (maybe 2). You can also increase the ride height for rallying. I use 55mm shock lengths (instead of standard 50 mm), but you need to cut out some of the bottom of your chasis to make way for the lower arms. This gives me 25 mm (1 inch) clearance. Go to http://www.rctech.net/forum/singapor...-rally-19.html post 565. The pictures show the under side of a modified chasis.

Enjoy rebuilding your TT-01

Thanks for advice on the oil. What shocks do you use for rallying then that are 55mm? Or is it just using longer shafts? I was aware of this mod to add ground clearance and think I will go ahead with it.

They have the same body as the 50 mm shocks but longer shafts.

I was going to place an order tonight, but Im confused about RCmart??? First off it isnt a secure site, is this something to be worried about or is it because its in hong kong? Kind of worries me. Next is the paying process, very confusing. It wanted me to pay through some wierd website. Any help is appreciated.
