I got a chance to run an early 65 I rebuilt a while back.
Engine, early Saito 65 with 12.7 to 1 compression
Prop======Xoar 13 x 6
Fuel======Wildcat 10% with 18% fuel synthetic lube
Plug======Well used Fox Miracle
Exhaust===Late revised, cast muffler
Idle======2,100
Max rpm==9,950

Got an apc 12x7, 12x8 or 13x6 to test with?

It sure has some serious finger chasing compression, 10% fuel is a bit much, it's a little rattly at full peak. At 50 rpm down from peak it's very smooth. As you saw it's rigged up for CHI which I have at 30 btdc. This was it's first run after rebuild.
Clarence Lee got 10,400 with the same engine and a an unnamed 13 x 6.
PS, I just told a big lie, twice, I bought that 65 from a Dentist up in Maine a couple of years ago, I also got one from Gary. Gary got that black muffler from me.
NIB 65.

Still have that muffler too. I think I will go forward with the plan to make a dual plug, high compression, early carb FA-65. I have a brand new FA-325 cylinder just sitting here, going to waste.
The "dual plugs" will be CDI energized, spark plugs. Could be a real sweet methanol disposal unit on zero nitromethane.
Congrats on the new 100!
I bet next time you need a throttle extension, you will just make one

I'm having a problem with my FA-65. I guess it's the later model, as it came in a black and gold box. Anyway, it is new and I ran about a gallon of 15% fuel through it for break-in. I have it mounted inverted in a Cub. It is giving me trouble keeping running at low throttle without a battery assist on the glow plug. I have a new O.S.Type F plug in it. I thought I had the problem solved when I checked the valve lash and found it too wide. It runs a bit better, but not as I expected a Saito to perform. I have also adjusted the idle needle with no success on the flame out issue.
Anyone have an idea what I'm doing wrong?

LSN may be the reason since it is inverted. Assuming you are using the pressure tap to the tank and a 3 line setup for the fill, try a 1/16 turn in and see if it improves. If not turn out 1/8th turn. When it dies is it sputtering or just quitting? If you ran it in upright, then mounted inverted, chances are this will correct it.

I'm using a Dubro Kwik-fill setup with two lines, one for fuel feed and the other for muffler pressure. The engine sputters to a stop when it dies. I was thinking I may have to mount the engine horizontally.

Hey Bob, I take it that your 65 has the later carb with both needles in the ends of the carb barrel where as mine has the second needle, (air bleed) at the rear of the carb. Is my thinking correct, Thanks, Dave

Thanks Jim, mine has the humpty piston, Gary may know if the 10.5 to 1 ratio engine had the same piston or a flat top piston.
Humpty piston
Is there any way to know what version 65 by external appearance?
edit, looks like version 3 got a beefed up cylinder flange and case as well as as 2n carb,
