Has the Katana S become extinct?

Deal,
Are you looking for the SFG's for the Katana 50? They were in the box of the ARF that I purchased. I just can't see myself using them, they look so large, and I've heard that aside from 3D they actually detract for precision aerobatics.

So after much debating on what to do about the rear mounted micro servos on the Hangar 9 Katana that control the elevator I think I have finally made a decision on what servos I'm going to trust with what will be the most precious Katana in my Hangar, I honestly didn't like that it didn't use std size servos, the size of servos it uses is odd and I wasn't sure what was good and bad.
So I decided to just spend the money on some Hitec HS-5245 digital metal gear, these bad boys crank out nearly 80 ounces of torque at 6v, there going to be heavier than the recommended Spectrum servos, but I figure it should even out with the big OS 91 I'm going to bolt to the nose
plus ive been trusting Hitec servos with all my big models for a very long time, I have yet to experience a failure from a Hitec servo.
So very excited to do this build.

Deal,
I think that your choice of servos is an excellent one. I have Futaba 3016's I'm planning to use in mine.Your choice of engine is perfect. Two mini servos in the rear should get the job done nicely.Did the SFG's come with your kit? Mine were an option.

Deal,
We use equipment appropiate to the value and cost of the model. In a model such as this, digital and high quality servos are a wise choice. If you don't find the SFG's in your kit, let me know.
I think that the Katana wasn't given much kit production and fanfare as the other areo models because there really aren't many scale ones being flown. I found only one picture of the real one. It seemed like a one-off experiment.
I use Futaba becuase that's my radio brand for years and I'm comfortable with it.
Keep us posted on your progress, as I'm still putting together my newest Extra 300 from Aeroworks, who just recently closed their doors. Talk about having something that is discontinued!

2walla,
Normally the shear web orientation is vertical. Do you mean that some shear webs were put in with the balsa grain runnung horizontal? I have a Hanger 9 RV-8 that has most of the shear webs in the wing where the ends of the shear webs don't completely go to the sides of the ribs. I fly that one competely in a scale like fashion. I would expect better from Hanger 9, especially since the Katana was designed by Mike McConnell, Hanger 9"s pro designer. I'm starting to understand why the Katana was discontinued.

From everything I've read on the Katana, there were problems with some of the first sold, maybe the first few hundred? Hard to say, I'm not even sure what to look for on the wings to know if I'll have a problem or not.
hell im going to be plenty nervous as it is when I maiden this bird, I'm going to take my time building it, making sure it's perfect, I'm running some of Hitecs best servos, as well as a super expensive JR reciever, haven't decided on a receiver battery yet but I will probably keep it simple and use a 6v nimh pack.

Well i I went through everything in the box to see if the side force generators were included in this kit, I did not find them, and I went through everything and untapped everything.
Oh well I'm not going to sweat it, not a big deal.

Deal,
Let me know if you need the SFG's. A way to check on the shear webs is to inspect the spar area through the wing servo mount, as well as the root rib openings. That's how I spotted it on my RV-8. Now I'm thinking of postponing my build on my Katana, maybe forgoing it altogether.

It's ok man, I didn't want you to have to spend the money to send them to me.
Im not sure what it would be but probably more then either of us would expect.

So I'm hoping to get some feedback on this, I'm going to mount the OS 91FX, what I can't decide is whether to mount the motor sideways or inverted? I have a nice inverted Pitts muffler for the 91 I could use if I go that route.
any thoughts?

I'd be concerned about the plane being nose heavy and possibly over powered. It's built pretty light for an ARF, and the suggested 2 cycle power plan is a .61. I think the majority of them are coming out at around 6-61/2 lbs. I think that mounting it inverted would cancel out any tendency for a lateral imbalance, and the cowl would only need minimal cutting. I would go with a horizontal engine to avoid a high tank position and the associated idling and running problems, but since you already have an inverted muffler................................

Actually horizon suggests a 15cc Two stroke if you go with gas, my 91fx is 6 ounces lighter then the lightest 15cc gas engine which is a RCGF 15bm, I've seen photos and videos of guys mounting a DLE 20 on this bird which is insanity. I considered going with the RCGF 15 but decided I'd rather keep the weight down, and the 91fx likes 10% nitro content so that helps keep the price down per gallon.

Are we talking about the Katana 50? After reviewing the specs it says .55 2-stroke, .82 4-storke, or 14cc gas. Since a 14cc gas equates a .91 you would be correct. I was planning on an O.S. 82a since I was not anticipating any 3D flying. I know that plenty of guys are powering theirs with .91 4-srokes and the like, I'm a bit concerned because the model seems very lightly built compared to my Aeroworks and GP's Extras. It seems to me that it was designed leaning more for electrics than glow or gas. The fellow here that powered his with a .91 4-stroke could possibly let us know how his airframe is holding up. How about it LSP 972?

The weight of this bird is far to much for a 55 two stroke like the OS 55ax, there coming in at 6 1/2 to 7 pounds, that's more the weight class of a 60 size bird, this is why I chose the 91fx, well that and I paid half the price of what they used to cost new for a nearly new motor, it's never been mounted on a plane and still needs broken in.
The 91fx runs very nicely after a gallon of nitro, I have one mounted on my Great planes Extra 300 .40 the old school extra.

Definitely sideways, with the Pitts muffler. Those huge canister two stroke mufflers will make you really wreck the cowl.
Remember, this model is tail heavy due to the two elevator servos; mine has an OS 91 Surpass, and I still had to mount the RX battery alongside the tank to get proper balance.
Gonna fly mine today; the weather here has been simply fabulous.

LSP,
I envy you, as it's winter in michigan. I have my planes in winter storage, so it's building time. Thanks for the tail heavy warning, as it will save me some grief.
