Default RE: Airport X-Ray damage

shenion - I don't remember, but it's on the cd's they made. I'll check. I just discovered that my scanner has a negative scanner built in and I'm playing with it right now. Does a really good job, but specks of dust are huge. Other than that, it's a heck of a lot faster than scanning each print individually. Will scan two rows of negs at the same time in about 3 minutes. I'll pull out my books and find those negs and take a look at them. As I recall, the damage was on the negatives.

nope - not on the negs, so it must have happened during printing

From my understanding, only higher speed films are damaged by x-rays. Anything at 1000 ASA
or higher shouldn't go through the x-ray machine. I have passed many unexposed rolls of 800 and lower ASA films through without a problem. I always had the higher speeds hand inspected. But this was before 9/11. Now they probably don't care.

nope, not from xray. xray mechines will destroy undeveloped film (all speeds and all types) instantly but it wall make veritival lines very close to gether, kind of like static on a tv only in one direction.if you mail it be sure to stamp on the envelop "Photographic films DO NOT X-RAY"

also, the xrays for cheked bagage are FAR stronger than cary on for obvious reasons the cary on cant be as strong. the checked mechine is somewhere up to 100X stronger X-Ray. thus if you check it the film is toast, if its cary on there may be a hope, which is why you may not have damaged your slower fimb since its less reactive to light and going throug ht elower intensity rays for a short time didnt have as drastic an effet but if you look closly, i garantee there is damge to those pics. very faint lines everwhere. the end result looks kinda cool though.

also, the mechines that scan mail are even stronger.

"I had a similar thought. There is fuzz/lint in the processing equipment with the negatives."
I guess I should have said print process. First thing you do is check the negatives. Oh well lesson learned!

Sure did keep us busy wracking our brains!

4*60 - Yep that was my bad. I was absolutely positive the damage was on the negs because for some reason I thought I looked at them when these were developed (Feb '02). But, I was wrong. Sorry to trouble everyone. I honestly feel pretty stupid for starting this thread and not getting my facts straight first. I hate it when I do that.
