Let's see:

- It is a larger model

- It has a much more complicated color scheme

- There's a larger painted fiberglass cowl

- It's the only one of it's type to be available,

- plus it looks really cool!

And, there's a lot to be said for Cool....

That's worth an additional hundred bucks by itself

Slightly larger (76 vs 72 inch span),

Both have fiberglass cowls,

The cowl scheme is more complicated for the painter, but not $100 more complicated.

Oh, we forgot to factor in an extra $50 for fiberglass wheel covers...

But, I agree, it is cool. And there is something to be said for that.

I will likely end up with one of these, but the extra $100 will make me think about it for a while.

Hello,

Very impressive offering! I wish they toss out the MK and use fabric instead. It will be great for electric! DP

-Only the TOP WING is slightly larger. The lower wing is smaller than the Stearmans. Which puts the plane in the same size range as the Stearman.

-The color scheme may require many individual pieces of Monokote but both GP Stearmans also have complicate color schemes

-The Stearman also has a fiberglass cowl plus a dummy engine. And the Super Stearman also has wheel pants

-And it doesn't look $100 more cool. As a matter of fact, the steep price makes it suddenly look not cool at all. It makes it a total turn off.

It ain't cool [&o]

Nope ... changes to not worth the the price, let alone $100 more.

That's what happens when people try to price gouge other people.

You're kidding right? How much time and effort and money would it take for you to arrive at a ship as impressive looking as this one? Kills me when people will cry about an exra hundred bucks then go out and buy two medicre looking semi-scale looking birds, which by the way everyone else at your field shows up with.

I figure this will be a popular bird (pun intended) regardless of the price. Wouldn't it be a hoot to get yours, put it together in "secrecy" so you can surprise everybody on Sat. afternoon at the field. You pull up and start to unload, and then notice all the starting tables have a Curtis Hawk sitting on them, getting gassed up to fly.[sm=bananahead.gif]

Nope. I'm certainly NOT kidding.
I can build one better looking than that one. I've already proved that years ago. As a matter of fact, I've got two sets of P6-E plans in the closet now. one a .60 size and a 1/4 scale.
(In response to Your 'it kills me') It kills me when people would pay any price rather than get off their can and build one for themselves. I'm lazy myself, but the price on that plane is ridiculous.
That P6-E isn't worth it. Look it over real close and compare it to a scale job. This one is a stand way off (and squint) scale at best.

But if you're loaded with money and price is no object, why don't you buy us both one? [8D] Since it's such a good deal and all.

hey Ramon, here's a crazy idea but maybe people are more into flying than glueing sticks together. Thats why this is the F**king ARF forum. I love to surf but I dont catch Sh*t from the other guys in the water because I didnt shape my own board. get a clue dude.

Lazy?, perhaps we all work 40 plus hours a week and have families.

Yes, it IS pretty. And I do buy ARFs when I feel that it's a good buy.
i.e. the GP PT-17 Stearman, which is another beautiful plane.
It's just that this one is overpriced to me, and as you said 'if you don't like it, don't buy it' -- That one I will not buy.
If it was closer to scale - or the price of the Stearman - I would most likely buy it.

The $599 is full retail, according to my LHS guy, who has one on order. He figures it will sell for maybe high threes or low fours, not too much more than the Stearmans. I, too could probably buld one nicer (I'm not a fan of plastic covering), but by the time I was done, I'd have just as much, if not more, money in it, and could have been flying it for over half the time it would have taken me to build it.

I hope my response to Dick Pettit was not taken as any sort of personal attack. It was not intended in any such manner, just discussion of the aircraft and its cost.

If my earlier post was in any way taken as an attack on anyone by anyone, my apoligies.

I certainly would not want to make an enemy of anyone here, particularly Dick. I met him at Top Gun two years ago and he was a great guy.

I prefer to build. I do have some ARF's that give me a quick fix. I have high regard for the value of GP planes. I also have some issues with them. It takes me 6 months to a year to build something and it costs a penny or two also. I have the GP PT-17 Stearman and it flys great but I will replace it with a built Ziroli at some point.
Buy one if you like it! The price is probably fair and what to market will bear.

I wish I could have built my Ziroli 77 inch Stearman for $599.00! I've got about $1200 in her. These ARFs are a bargain if you ask me.

If the quality supplied on this model is improved it will be worth the extra 100 bucks. However, if I have to spend two days sealing down and heating out wrinkles on the poorly applied monocote than it's not worth it. GP is great about putting out some cool arf's, but the quality leaves much room for improvement.

Of course when you read reviews most quality issues never make the print. The exception I have seen lately is the review of the GP Stearman in R/C Report done by Gordon Banks. His review was right on the money a called out the errors and quality issues with the plane.

Don't get me wrong, GP brings value and fun models to the market. One more step up in the quality area would be nice though.

Dick, what do you propose to power your review bird with? Do they provide an engine, or do you get a choice? Stuff a G-26 in this baby, or better yet, one of the Fuji 4-strokes if it will fit.

I own the Super Stearman and my partner owns the PT-17 Stearman. Both are good planes for the money. Not Top Gun but not bad either. I see this P-6 as an evolution in GP's ARF's and I sure hope it is built as good as it looks. While some think that $480 is too steep a price, consider what the overall cost will be:

P-6E ARF $480
Zenoah G-26 $300
Servos/Receiver/Batteries/Switches $400
Misc Parts $100

Total $1280

Considering that the cost of everything else that is required to make it fly is much more expensive than the cost of the model, I think that the extra $100 cost for this plane is not as significant as it looks initially. If it is good quality like most of the current GP ARF's, then I will be adding one to my "Bear Force".

Looking at the close-up, there appears to be enough room above the prop hub for an upright engine. Can anyone say "Fuji 4-stroke"?
But, we have to make a cooling hole above the prop hub for an upright mount.
It would be very difficult for me to choose upright or inverted.
I have Marutaka P6E balsa kit which has a cooling hole in front for upright mount,
although I can not notice any air exit hole on the plan.

OK:

Here is the skinny on the Curtis Hawk..Available Late Dec. Price is $ 479.99..if they change the price on it to 599.99,then I'm not getting one..that is too much for that bird.........If I do get one, will install a G-26 or a FPE 2.4 gasser in it...should do the trick..............
