Glenn,

Do you know if your gyro is coming today?

I put a new pinion on the T-Rex motor. It is at 3300RPM's now and getting up to 140 degrees after a 6 minute flight. The heat outside probably doesn't help.

My parts are finally in Nebraska, but I still won't get them till tomorrow.

Nick,

The gyro got here today. I will probably install it and set some stuff up later on tonight.

I can't decide how I want to do the setup. I think I want to get the proportional in the ballpark with no gyro, either the built in 3 in 1 one, or the G110 first, and then add the gyros to the mix.

You know, I don't even know if I played around with the HH on the gyro last time around. I think my radio defaults to 50% on the gyro, which on the G90/G110 is the switching point between rate and HH modes.

I read where one guy had good luck with his gyro turned pretty far down, and was using revo mixing to get the tail to act better.

I think that was some of my tail's "kicking out" problem that I was having before, when I applied throttle, the tail would kick badly. I think it was made worse by the very heavy main blades I was using.

It should be interesting, for sure.

Glenn,

Cool to hear you got the gyro. I will be interested to hear how it turns out for you. Then I will know where to start when I get my parts.

Nick, Heli,

Well, the verdict is in....and all I can say is a big WOW!!!

Easily the best my CPP has ever flown, period. When I was flying it in some figure 8's, I could not believe I was flying a CPP!!

The tail was very, very well behaved, especially at higher speeds and forward flight. It's still kinda a handful at hover, but not bad, really. The tail stays put, but it's still got that CPP squirrely feel to it.

I wish I could have video taped it. I wasn't even planning on flying it, I just wanted to get some of the basic settings out of the way.

Nick, I do believe that what I was doing wrong before, even with the stock tail setup, was not using the G110 in HH mode.

I'll pick up next message about how I set it up, and what I ended up with for settings...

What a cool improvement!!

The motor is very powerful, and works very hard when flying. It makes quite a bit of buzzing noise while it's working hard...pretty neat. Sounds nothing like the stock tail motor...sounds like a big bee...LOL

Default RE: are these blades any good for cp pro?

Nick,

Here is how I set it up, and have it now;

I started with using the HH wire on the G110, which I never did before. It's a single yellow wire that goes to the gear channel on the AR6200. Make sure the wire is the right direction, opposite the black ground wire. You'll see when you go to do it.

I also decided to listen to the CPP manual, and keep the stock 3 in 1 gyro gain set to zero.

I began with no gyro, either on the 3 in 1, or on the TX. Set the gyro in the DX6i to zero on both switch settings. Then, spooled it up, to get my proportional in the ballpark. It was already dead on, so I was set there. I hovered it for a bit like that, with no gyros, and it seemed fine, no weird things happening to the tail, etc. All was good.

So, I took the TX and dialed in the gyro settings to position zero; 60% ....and postion 1; 70%.

With those settings, I took off, and hovered a bit, and went for a fly! Was doing beautiful figure 8's, and banked turns right off the bat. My CPP has NEVER flown like this before!

Amazing difference. Keep in mind, I also paid alot of attention to all my setup stuff, which was way off before. So your improvment might not be as dramatic as mine has been.

Now, it's not perfect...it's not locked like a belt tail, by any means...but what a difference, defininely much more flyable, and much more enjoyable to fly!

Once it was up there doing figure 8's, the fact that it was a CPP with a motor tail was not even on my mind it was flying so well!!

Then, when all was going so well....I'll finish next message....

Glenn,

That is good news. It sounds like I might enjoy the CPP again.

Good to hear you were able to fly the CPP today.

I was reading about AMA park flyer program. They are trying to get people to form clubs where they fly light and slow aircraft at open fields. On the website you can see if anyone near you is part of it and two people that I know from my local flying club are apart of it. They don't have a park flyer club, but offer assistance if needed. Here is a link to it if you are interested http://www.modelaircraft.org/parkflyer.aspx

Nick,

Well, all good things must come to an end. And I still not sure what happened, it's not related to the tail setup.

Right after the 2nd pack, I decided to bump the pitch curve down a tad. So, I went in and did that, no problem.

I put the 3rd pack in, and was going to do my last flight of the night, and took off, and it was flying very WEIRD, counldn't put my finger on it exactly, just something was not right, so I went to put it down for a look, and when I cut the throttle down a bit, it slammed into the ground pretty hard. Broke the tailblade...split it where it goes on the shaft.

I took a look, and in normal mode, I was getting full travel of the swash, like it was in idle up...but it wasn't. I put the throttle about 1/4 stick, and flipped the idle up (F. mode) switch on and off, and no difference. It seemed to be "stuck" in idle up, but with normal throttle/motor control.

I just checked it now, once I got it home, and all is good. I don't know what happened there. I do know that when I was setting up the Gaui, right in the middle of doing some settings, the radio all of a sudden lost EVERYTHING, it like completely flipped out, and I had to start all over again.

Now I am down to one tail rotor blade. I wonder if they sell them individually? It was kinda strange the way they came...the motor, tail fin, and stuff were in their own bags...the tail rotor blades were just in the bigger ziplock bag, loose.

I need to go to the website and check it out. I hope I don't have to get a whole tail again, but that might not be a bad idea anyways, since I am sure the motors will not last forever.

Glenn,

I didn't even think of turning the external gyro down to 0% gain to adjust the proportional potentiometer.

I was looking at my old CPP video and I saw the tail was kicking out all the time, so if this DD motor can get rid of most of that then I should be happy.

And my 401 isn't holding like it should on the T-Rex. It was in HH mode when I picked it up and I shook the helicopter just to see what would happen then it went out of HH mode and started doing a double blink. And in the manual it says it can't find the center or something like that. The tail still holds, but when I am in a hover the tail starts to drift. I thought I figured it out, but this is stumping me. It never did this on my Belt CP. It seems that once I take off it starts to do this double blink thing, because it will drift in a hover right after take off.

Glenn,

Sorry to hear about the accident.

That is very strange about the transmitter.

Yeah they sell the blades seperately. There are two types and two different colors. The ones that came in your kit are the prefered type. I have four of the orange ones from my last DD motor purchase, so I should be good.

Nick,

I wonder if the temperature is affecting your gyro?

I have read that you need to let the gyro stabilize in temperature for like 15 minutes, so it can acclimate to it's ambient temperature.

Just a thought.

Hope you can get it fixed.

That AMA thing looks pretty cool, I did a search, and there are only two people in a 25 mile radius from me, but 11 if I go 50 miles out...

It would be good to get AMA membership anyways, for the insurance and what not.

Nick,

Sounds cool, I'll go check the blades out.

I think it broke because it is a VERY tight fit on the shaft, and it apparently doesn't take much to make it split at the hub.

Thanks,

Glenn

Nick,

Yeah, I found the blades, pretty cheap too. I should have ordered some when I got the tail. Hindsight is 20/20.

Glenn,

The temp could be affecting it and I wonder if humidity is also. When I go out side my transmitter screen fogs over.

I am an AMA member. I think if those maintenance people tell me not to fly I can tell them all the property is insured up to 2.5 million dollars.

CatPart,

Are the individual parts still available on Eboyztoyz? You could go that route instead of buying the kit.

Nick,

I was wondering about that...I wonder if you are covered by the AMA insurance no matter where you are flying? Or, does it only apply at sanctioned AMA flying events or areas? That would be good to know.

I also like the idea of the theft, vandalism insurance too.

I may have to check into that, for sure...

Glenn,

On this page http://www.modelaircraft.org/members.../overview.aspx it doesn't sound like it is only for AMA events. But it probably wouldn't hurt to call or email someone.

The main reason I got it is so I can fly at my local flying club.

Heli,

I hope you won big at the casino!!

I fly at the local horse race track, maybe I should go in there and bet on some horses!

How have you been? Flying the CPP OK?

Nick,

I flew a couple of packs with the CPP today. It was somewhat disappointing, however. It was a bit windy, but not real bad. For some reason, the CPP didn't seem to fly as well as it did yesterday.

I had a bad day at work, and wasn't really in much of a flying mood, so maybe that had something to do with it.

I hope you got all your parts today, so you can have some fun with your CPP project.

Sorry to hear about your day at work.

I did get my parts and they did come after I left for work. I don't know how much I will do tonight. I have tomorrow off from work, so I will have plenty of time to work on it.

Well the motor fit just fine in the stock gear box. Glenn you were right about cleaning up that heat sink paste. It is not easy.

I couldn't resist not working on the CPP. I am going to regret staying up this late tomorrow morning. Hopefully I can get a test flight in by tomorrow afternoon. The last picture is how I am going to hook up the brushed ESC after my other two tests on the CPP. I need to solder on a connector to the ESC, so I can take parts on or off without affecting either setups I want to try. When I first put on the tail rotor I put it on too far. Then it was rubbing on the screws for the motor. So I ended up taking two screw drivers and using them to pry the tail rotor out some. Then I just used a mini vise to press on the tail rotor.

Well I got everything soldered together and the motor is working, but I put the tail rotor on the wrong direction. When I give right rudder it rotates left. It is going to be a pain to get it off. But the motor does seem to have more power than the stock motor. I also had to reverse the connection on the 3in1 to get it to spin the right way.

Well it doesn't matter what way the rotor is put on because it will still rotate the same way. So the only way to make it work right with the stock gear box is to make the rotor spin the opposite way which it should. So looking on the right side of the helicopter it will spin clockwise. But I think this motor has enough power to work this way even with it spinning the wrong way. Now I just need to test it in the sky. It was actually pretty easy to take the rotor off once I could fit some big screwdrivers under it.
