LOL, What does castor have to do with it?

Take a big tablespoon of castor and call me in the morning.

Take a tablespoon of that sin-thetic and the family will be mourning

Been trying out this crud since late last season. About $80 4 liters depending on where you get it. Of course, I still add the 2% to 3% castor.

That said I have mine turning an APC 13x6 but on 30% nitro heli fuel I buy by the case. It’s a fun fly profile so low pitch works best for that type of flying. Very snappy throttle response.

With almost $350 in CDI convertion and accessories it's a very good deal. Now all I need to do is find a sack of hunderds laying around somewhere.

WHY?!?!?! Everytime I see one I kick myself for not buying the brand new one for $300 when I had the cash in my hand.

Sometimes does that with documents I send through Google also, but not every time. Maddening.

Default Fat Head 120

I got a very nice Saito 120 Fat Head from Gary last year. This engine has the mid range adjustment along with an air bleed for the low end. I have been flying it on a big trainer type plane all summer. This engine just has a straight pipe with no pressure tap. I got the idea to try one of my CNC machined mufflers on this engine. My muffler has a pressure tap.

I put this set up on the test stand today. I could not believe how much running muffler pressure changes all the carb settings. Does the mid range settings on this engine have an effect on the low end? My first thought was to set the high end, low end and then the mid range. I could not get it to run lower than 3K RPM until I reset the mid range. I now have the low end set so I can get it at 2.1K RPM but it is still rich. When I ran just the straight pipe, I was able to get a nice 1.9K RPM idle.

Is it possible to get too much muffler pressure? If so, is there a way to limit it? I’m going to run the engine some more on Saturday to see if I can get it set a bit better.

I am running a 15X8 prop and my fuel is home brew 3% nitro and 18% oil.

Pedro

Yep, the midrange dial affects the idle mix. In fact it affects the fuel mix from idle to wot because all of the fuel that enters the engine is metered by the midrange adjuster.

So why is it called a midrange adjuster if it affects everything else? Because if you turn the midrange dial to richen the mix you can still adjust the airbleed screw and hsn independently to lean out those two extremes, therefore leaving only the midrange richer.

It's meant to be a fine adjust for midrange fuel mixture. Adjusted too far lean or rich will render the airbleed screw unable to compensate.

Start with the airbleed screw covering half of the airbleed hole and the reference line on the midrange adjustment disk lined up with the reference line cast into the carb body.

I have a PDF file for the FA-120 that uses a similar carb. From what I read my mid range adjustment is still too rich so I have to turn the disk clockwise to lean everything a bit. Then I go back and reset the high speed needle then last I set the air bleed screw. The instructions for the FA-120 say I should get the low speed set to about 1.6K RPM. I will be happy to get it anywhere near 1.9K RPM that I was getting with the straight pipe with no muffler pressure.

If this fails to give me what I want I can always go back to the straight pipe with no muffler pressure.

Rotating the midrange changes the fuel inlet relationship to this curlyque slot on the 120, this 65 doesn't have midrange adjuster..
