I'll check into that tomorrow if you can't come up with one. With all the storms we've been having I was behind on the lawn mowing. I mowed in the 100 degree heat and then more storms came in. I should be able to run the 65 BK on Saturday am.
just ordered 4 packages today
Thanks Dave and glowie
Well I got out for the first time this year, took along the trusty LT-40 and was going to maiden the Chipmunk. Got to the field, got the plane all set up and when I spun the motor over to prime the carb I noticed the starter wasn't turning very fast and eventually stopped. Turns out one cell dropped off on the 3S Lipo. I had just charged it not too long ago, after I did the run up on the corsair. Only thing I can think is one cell dropped below threshold when I drained the starter spinning up the 120R3 and didn't recover. ALl 3 cells were at 3+ volts when I last charged it, so I don't know what happened, but not happy.
Anyway I was able to fire up the FG-11, and after I let it run a bit to get the fuel lines soft, and fully warmed up, I flew it. The midrange isn't very good anymore, and when I did a slow roll it sputtered at WOT. I guess I need to take the carb apart and clean it because rolling should not have any effect on the gas carb. Last few times I flew it seemed a bit off and had quit too. Landing was fun, could not get the idle down enough because I was afraid it might quit. That darn plane does not know when to land, it just gets into ground effect and stays there.
I wanted to maiden the Chipmunk, got it all put together and fueled, and found I needed a long shaft glow driver, the short one wouldnt fit, so brought out the battery box and hooked up the long corded one I have. Power panel is bad, can't get enough heat to the plug, something I forgot about when I was trying to fire up the radial. The potentiometer is bad. Well, I got at least one flight in. Now off to pull the FG-11 off the LT-40 and clean it up.

Pretty slow I had the den flood last weekend so nothing happened. I am hoping to get the pieces I broke on the fuselage last time fixed this weekend. It too muddy to do anything outside. We broken 9.5 inches of rain this past week. I will have to spray the yard when it drys to keep from being eaten alive by mosquitoes.
Mike I'm travelling, will send you an email soon cheers buddy, and a joke for the week...
ps Dave you dang fool, 100f is too hot to mow lawns at your age buddy. If you do it again make sure you rehydrate properly by sitting under the back porch and drinking a whole carton of Emu Export, there's a good bloke

Thanks Pete, my brother in Missouri hydrates with Moose Drool, Emu Export must come from the same family of beer. I used my Craftsman 46" rider, it wasn't so bad. It was given to me a few years ago because it had a flat tire and the lady had bought a new one. It's like 64 f this am, a good time to run the Black Knight.

Cap, after about 45 minutes run time the BK turns the APC 13 x 6 at 9,880, it flirts with 9,910 but doesn't stay there. That muffler, brand unknown to me has an irritating bark to it. I still want to run S&W 15% with 17% full synthetic. and try a couple of different mufflers. It had a suspect valve but it cleared up and it has super compression.
Saito 65 GK, no initial on the right lug, it has the bump on the piston.
Fuel=====Wildcat 10% 2/4 with 18% full syn.
Prop=====APC 13 x 6
Plug=====Taipan 4c special.
Exhaust==Unknown
Max rpm==9,880 after 45 minutes total run time.
Idle======1,650 but acceleration not good from there.
It runs uncannily smooth. I nearly made a painful mistake, after I reset the valve lash I attempted to flip it with two fingers, My still quick reflexes saved the day, I creased my fingers but did not slash them
Turning @ 6,500 with no smoke.

FG 11 switch question
Hi all...I just bought an FG 11 and am going to install it soon. The instructions call for a switch rated for 3 AMPS. At first, I had anticipated using one of the switches used for the receiver system. But I can find any rating on them. Has anyone found a good switch for the ignition system and had good results with it? Thank you for any help!
So I now feel like a total dumbass. I am out there twiddling with the carb settings trying to get the FG-11 running right. It has had this mid range burble that if you throttle up too fast it will kill the motor. Also it will surge or warble at WOT. I get the needles where transition is smooth and get decent WOT and it quits. Then it wont idle, hard to start etc. Finally it starts after a slight LSN tweak and runs good, but then mid range sputters, then I get it just right and it quits at WOT again. So I give up, maybe I should try some fresh gas, though my chain saw runs great off it.
I take the wing off, put it in the trailer then go back and pick up the fuse and at that VERY moment I realize I had a Walter moment. I really should have picked up on it when I saw gas drain from the fuel line when it stopped running. I am sure you guessed it now but let me tell you, sometimes it can be the simplest things. I forgot to unplug the vent line.
As those who run Saito gas know, there is no pressure line from the muffler, it is a two line system, Feed to carb and vent. I bet that tank looked like someone who bit into a very sour lemon.
It's too hot out at the moment and my run up is in the sun, so I will try again another day. When I finally gave up it did run smooth and went WOT until it quit, so I may have it very close now with just a slight HSN adjustment. SMDH

I told you guys that John Wayne loved his Saito engines. well the plane he was flying tonight crashed do to icing up. it was freezing. but the Saito engines still run

While working on some Saito 65's I stumbled onto this, (obviously) pre-hi cam box. I installed a new 65 cam in it and it would only turn about 270 degrees. In another engine I found this cam gear with broken teeth. I am left with a good crankshaft that needs the small cam gear. I am enjoying the work though. The two pictures have nothing to do with each other.
PS, one more radiation treatment tomorrow. PSA is currently at 0.2 mg's per litre. They're thinking it will be nearly nil in a few weeks.
Pre-Hi Cam bronze lifter guides protrude about .125" into the cam box, the Hi Cam lifter guides are even with the inner surface.

Reminds me of the timing gear from my 77 Chevy Impala. I ended up replacing the timing chain, gears, cam, and tappets. After 127K miles I had three lobes worn away 7 cracks and 3 missing teeth. What idiot thought plastic teeth made sense on a timing gear? She didn't have much power but she was still running.

It rates right up there with Ford's idea of no pins or Woodruff keys in the timing gears of my 1.6 L four cylinder. Guess what you have to pull to replace the water pump?

The plastic getting brittle with age. All that heat, temperature changes, and stress really do a number on the plastic. Have you ever seen plastic teeth on an after market replacement timing gear? I haven't and probably for a good reason. I bought the replacement parts from a reputable speed shop in town. They offered me two cams, one with a little better performance and one with better fuel economy. They engine was only rated at 110 HP I went with fuel economy, the performance cam wasn't going to help that engine. .

The broken Saito cam above came out of the cam housing on the right in that picture. I thought that the original intake cam follower was just castor glued and I had to tap it out, but when I inserted a new lifter, it would only go about 3/4 of the way in. After removing the lifter and peaking through the bore I think I know what happened. There was ring of metal about .125" down inside the intake lifter bore. My guess is the someone before CC got it, assembled the engine with a pushrod tube that was too long. That's just an educated guess.

Mike, my 71 Nova SS cam sprocket was metal but the teeth were covered with what look to be fiberglass, most likely plastic as you say. what ever it was it was all chipped up. Chevy made them that way to help quiet the engine down. I still have that sprocket on the wall of my garage. I knocked all the plastic off it.
Dave, I am so happy to hear your news !!

Thanks Jim, I may have a few 65 parts left over after I get 5 of them assembled, MIke will get the three best best ones back. Busy,busy. I am also restoring my Dad's 1982, red Cub Cadet.
I have run into a cambox like the one on the left in your picture. I think it was on an a used FA-56 I had. Yes, a high lift cam will hit the tappet bushings and also rub on the slot in the cambox due to the high lift cam having a wider gear.
