Got a question for all you gasser runners. I am reassembling my CARF Extra 330L. Just ordered 8 new servos, Powerbox match links, and a few other items. The only thing left now is power for the twin ignition for the DA-100. It is the older style limited to 6.0 max. The plane has a powerbox on it, with 2 7.4v Lion packs, and regulates to 5.9 volts to the RX and servos. What are your thoughts about putting the Optokill power input on the powerbox to power the ignition? Alternately I can use a Tech Aero IBEC which has optokill on it. Seem redundant though if the voltage is already regulated to 5.9. I have RCExcel Optokills for it.

I run dual 2S 2300mah LiFe packs in my 50cc gassers. Both have their own switch and are then plugged into the RX. The ignition is powered by a TA IBEC and is plugged into the RX as well. No powerbox.

Hey PedroThat was a A5M Claude. Gary's friend David Wayne Gunner built. It and several others of similar appointment. I was honored to meet his widow and purchase several of his phenomenal builds. The Claude was Saito 150 powered so we maidened and posted it Wednesday. Started ran and flew with no trim adjustment. One of the most stable warbird models I have personally flown. Stunning modeling. Flawless gentle flights. Feather landings. Little rudder as it gained ground speed, and smooth level wing climb to ceiling.
Thank you Gary

I ordered the wrong prop though last night, 26/10, for the DA, and when I discovered its a 28/10 I went to see if I could get it switched, found out they are out of stock on all sizes the DA can take. smallest is 26/12, but I will see how it works anyway, it is meant as a spare as I have a new one, and a Carbon Fiber one as well.
sorry, no saito for it, last I looked Saito doesn't make a 100CC size engine.

I have an off topic question for you guys.
What are some of your recommendations for a throttle servo on a gas engine. Specifically a DLE 60 twin. After I bought the engine I realized I could have used the the Saito 60cc twin gas. Sure wish I had known that then because I would have. But it is wheat is at this point.
I am getting some of the electronics a bit at a time. Just got the control surface servos (Hitech HS-645MG).
The project is a 1/3 scale Andy Sheber Pitts s1s. Not in any hurry, as we we in the process of a 2000 mile move, but just getting some of the parts ahead of time. Already have the fiber glass parts, now electronics.

Thanks for the videos ,great to see another one of Dave's masterfully built methanol burning beauties take to the sky.

We should be flying the Saito 300 powered Smith Miniplane as well as the DeHaviland Mosquito with it's lovely pair of Saito 56 Black Knights. A great way to burn all that methanol we have around here

Thanks acdii and Glowgeek. That clears it up for me. I use one of the Futaba 3004 I have for the throttle. I bought the control surface servos this past week (metal gear. I will keep adding to my bought electronics up till we are just about to hit the road.

Well I have come to the conclusion that the Chipmunk wishes to be a hanger queen, and so it shall be. Pulled it out, put it together, turned on the radio and everything except the rudder moves. GRRR. I take it apart and find the fitting for the servo arm popped out. Rather than put another keeper on it, I saw that it popped because I had pushed the rudder past the end point and the clevis for the pull pull tailwheel had pushed the rod up and popped the keeper. I went through my box of parts and fond one that is bolted on instead, so tapped the arm, threaded it through and locked it down with loktight, then positioned the rudder and did the same. All good to go!
Take it tot he run up stand to run the engine a bit and make sure it is good to go. Had trouble getting the igniter on, then finally got it to stay on, engine fired right up. I let it run a bit and start to raise the idle, muffler starts rotating. DAMMIT! Shut it down, dig out the wrench and get it tightened down. I noticed it was rather warm for the short period it ran. I get it all connected up again and it fires right up. I advance the throttle and it has a rough top end, so I start to adjust the HSN in a bit, get a peak point and it stumbles, back it out, but it quit. Fire it back up, start to adjust a bit and BANG, throws the prop.
This is the Saito 100 I have, 1 of 2. I go get the tools to remove the spinner and when i come back, there is smoke coming out from the cowl and I hear what sounds like boiling water. The back plate of the spinner is aluminum and HOT. The whole engine is hot. It didn't run that long but apparently it was running pretty lean. I also noticed not much oil from the exhaust. Anyway, I get the prop put back on and tight, the spinner, and I start it, it doesn't want to run very well at this point so I said heck with it, turned it off and carried it to the trailer. I may have to pull the cowl and try or put it on the test stand. No flying today.
Who knows maybe it was find to begin with and I just have too much prop on it. I definitely leaned it out too much, hope I didn't damage it.

Todd, sorry to hear about the Chippie. Sounds like a blockage in the carby or a leaky fuel feed line. An FA100 would have to run really lean/hot to chuck a prop, it's not a very high compression engine. As long as it still has good compression and no strange camgear noise you probably didn't hurt it. 14x8 or 15x6 are good props for the 100. Good luck. I'd love to see a vid of that one flying.![Stick Out Tongue](images/smilies/tongue.gif)

One thing I noticed is that if I point the plane on it's nose, fuel will run out the muffler via the pressure feed. It is a 3 line tank, fill, vent/pressure, and carb. The fill line is plugged, so the only way air gets back into the tank if it is coming from the vent line is via the carb, which was closed. The engine was running too lean, and got hotter than it should in that amount of time, the smoke coming out of the cowl was another factor. The engine is mounted 45*to the left when facing it. I have run other Saitos inverted without issues, so this is a puzzling one.
