Yes Glowgeek, I put a new plug in. The engine is running very well now, I put it down to a combination of things, a worn out poorly adjusted engine and bad fuel made me realize it needed TLC and when I reassembled it the poorly adjusted low speed needle caused problems, plus finding the pushrod out of place! Placing the pushrod properly and leaning out the low needle has it running well.

Over the last couple days I resurrected an old friend which still looks surprisingly good. A 2005 or there abouts RCM 40 by Global Hobby. It has worn an Enya 46 MKII, a Fox 50, a Saito 45, a Merco 50 and now a Saito 50 made from spare parts and a new cylinder. I got a very close match painting the crankcase black. It will be controlled by the new green JR radio and a 6 volt NIMH 1600 battery. I don't think the servos will handle the 7.4 volt battery the new receiver will handle. Everything works perfectly at 6 volts. I side mounted the engine when I ran a PAW 40 on it.
Nice one Dave, those Bridi / RCM Trainer Forties were hugely popular back in the early 1980s! Great flying machine and a fine engine choice to boot. Those engines from parts piles you do are a real labor of love.
Very nice to see you rounded up the goodies to breath life into that pile of parts. Better still seeing it go straight into a plane. I have been having a blast with a GK50 in a very old Goldberg Eagle 63. Did a little low throttle (as low as possible) thermaling at the field a couple weeks ago. I landed, engine running, fuel to spare after 30 minutes from an eight ounce tank..Love the sound of that engine.
Let us know how she goes, hope the green transmitter i
brings you some luck
Dont forget to add some metal-flake prop tips

The only fault I've seen and it hasn't been too bad is the main gear is kinda wimpy, as can be seen, the main wheels are not straight up and down..
I am still waiting for the 56 cylinder from Crunch.

Bad gear??
Maybe you need to flare closer to the runway
I looked here for the 56 cylinder I that I had,
Looked all over, none to find. I did find a FA-65 in nice condition.
Like I have heard somewhere before...,
"poof, gone!"

hey guys. does the Saito 120s use the same case as the 150? my 120s has the engine size embelin missing and the case is identical to the 150 in the photos. so I am just wondering. you know. if the cases are the same, how will I know what engine it is.
BTW, it has an "F" on the mounting tab, and the manual photo is of the 150, the muffler is 29+mm fat, the stinger is 15mm long, stinger is 9+mm. and the whole thing is 78mm long tip to tip. muffler is straight tip to tip.
the muffler looks like the one in my link, but pressure hose barb on my muffler is down by where it mounts the pipe. I guess the muffler could have been swapped out if it fits both engines??

sorry for all the edits, my mind is racing, we just sold the house I grew up in. and of course it couldn't go easy you know.
thanks!

I took a few minutes yesterday to play with the lathe and made this installer for 2 mm studs into the small Sullivan control rods. I've had the one on the right for along time, one end does 2/56 studs and the other end does 4/40 studs. So, I made one for the 2 mm studs.

Jim, here is a chart that, if you can read it might help. https://saito-engines.info/specifications.html
I tried to download it but it has too many protections.

Measuring stroke through the glow plug hole is easy, especially if the engine is mounted to a plane or bench. Use a caliper, balsa stick or whatever to measure piston rise from bdc to tdc. The key to measuring accurately is to make sure the measuring device is inserted and held parallel to the cylinder bore. Takes about 2 minutes.
It is a lot easier than you think... Glowgeek's method is one, but you can also take off the backplate and measure directly at the crankpin:
For example:
1-Measure the width of the engine over its mounting lugs, and note down
2-Turn the crank to 9 o'clock, and measure from inside of crankpin to outside of LH mounting lug, note down.
3-Repeat for 3 0'clock position
4-Measure crankpin diameter and note down
Stroke length is 1 - (2+3) + 4

I plan to measure the stroke as GG (GlowGeek) suggests in his 2nd reply, but I have to wait till I get the new engine stand. I have no way to hold the engine other than remounting it in the plane or to wood with the engine mount, but I will wait for the stand. it's just the way I rather do it than have someone hold the engine for me as I do the deed.
BTW, I have that link that Dave posted. I find it interesting that the 100, 125, 120, 150, 180 and the 220 all utilize the same crank threads
thanks guys.

Jim, I make these engine holders out of .75" plywood, they're easy to make. I have one for each size Saito engine block. Two opposite corner sheet metal screws can hold them down if need be.

Cardiologist early today, then I am going to run the rebuilt 50 shown above. I realized yesterday that I had never run it after the rebuild. It will be turning an HY 12 x 6.
Dave,
Who makes that HY 12-6 prop? Is that it in the photo?
Plane looks good
And hope all goes well for you today, at the doctor as well as at the field.

thanks to the digital camera that engine looks too big for that plane. I have noticed digital cameras can have problems with "depth" at times, I have a lot of pics of my grandkids and their noses in some pics look too big in other pics their faces look too thin. these pics were taken with a number of different cameras.
