Dave, I'm clad Geri is doing so well, it's quite a operation to have!!!
FlyerIN, the Doctor did all the work. people up here love the guy. I'm happy you came through so well!!!
Hocky, LOL I sure know what you mean. when I left 2nd grade my school closed. I had to go to a school that took in disabled children. I learned quickly to feel for the disabled.
Gary, my wife has tiny feet, like her father she has had problems for years with her feet and legs.

No kidding.....
But perhaps you didn't realize that I was?
The main thing I remember was having to listen to all those grown men getting Physical Therapy screaming like little sissies!!!
I wish broken vertibrae were as easy to fix.
Jim, I picked the Norwegian princess for my wife because I really liked her legs
Yessir Dave,
Very glad to hear Geri is doing so well!

I screamed once during PT, it was during the at home when I had hit a plateau and told the therapist to go ahead and force it. I really did scream like a little girl too!
Fortunately I haven't broken vertebrae, you can stay one up on me on that one! I did blow out a disk and started losing control over the left leg. Ended up with a fusion, 2 rods, and 4 screws.
If I was a Saito I would be sold for spare parts if they could find any takers!

But then again I have known my wife for 70 years.
I turned 73 on July 04, so I have known her since we were three. That was long before any perception of beauty meant anything. Again, I was only kidding .
BTW, the Norwegian is the paternal side. The maternal side is Polish.
But you can have the high ground.

Of course, yes.
You have me on years of life and years of acquaintance with your princess. I've known Julie for 37 years, married for 30 of those on Sept 3rd this year.
Happy belated birthday, Gary.
PS, thanks for the reference catalogs, those will keep me entertained for years.

"Julie" a fine Polish name. Had a very good lady friend in high school. Julie Ko***. Born and raised in Krakow Poland. Her dad was an excellent machinist had a lot of influence on me.
Julie grew up to be sn excellent Medical Doctor.
The books are loaded with good stuff. Cleaning out the file cabinet to make the estste sale an easy one!
I knew they would not be wasted in your hands.
Enjoy...

My daughter in-law, married to my oldest son, is from Rudnick Poland, a little south and west of Krakow if I remember correctly. Monika is a real keeper too!.

the first Wednesday of JHS 7th grade, 4th period, walking down the hall to wood shop. a blond with long straight, golden strawberry blond hair comes out of the last room at the end of the hall, room 100. my god was she beautiful. she looked like she just popped out of a 1947 move. Thursday I didn't see her. at the end of the school day I was called into the office and was given a new schedule and I zipped home. Friday. period 4, walking down the hall I look at my new schedule, study hall room 100. I couldn't believe it! I walk into room 100. my god my god. as I posted before, like my life was pre-written. there she sat. and I sat down right beside her. she was as lovely as she was beautiful. we became friends, I didn't have eyes for any other girl in those 6 years of school. but I couldn't ask her out for she was a 10 and I was a 6. we went through HS, and in 12th grade I got a job at the plywood shop and a few months after leaving HS there she showed up and there she was making plywood with me. we started dating. and married.
Gary LOL, we both were thin then LOL

I moved up a little in the world today, I received a new digital caliper from MicroMark. It was $36.00 off and I said, why not. It remembers the original Zero if you choose.
It has a nice precise feel to it.
Jim,
Awesome story, right from the heart.
Sure bests the picture of that knee-bone incision!
I almost retaliated by posting a scar pic of my Nephrectomy incision; Ten inch slash from sternum to bottom of rib cage.
Janis forbade me, said it was pure pornography!
Dave, those digital calipers will get a lot of use.
Quick tip:
When turning diameter on the lathe, you can pre-set the desired dimension, say .513" by opening the calipers to .513". Without moving them, hit the zero button. Now, check the setting by closing them up. You should read -.513".
Now, take your cuts and measure. You will be reading directly the amount of stock left to remove.

Thanks much, I haven't gotten into the instructions yet. It came with two Maxell CR2032 lithium batteries.when most things say, "not included". The other one may end up in a tachometer.
Reviews are very good on that DDC, Dave. Machinists are stating that the next step up in quality costs 3X more. The only negatives mentioned are "no auto shutoff" and very slight burrs present on the jaws of some units. May be a good idea to check the closed jaws against a bright back light. My Mitutoyos don't have auto shut off either. No biggie if I pay attention to shut them off.
The battery drain, even when on is extremely low anyhow.
Those burrs can be dressed off with a good, Hard Arkanas oilstone used lightly across the corners. Just leave the measuring faces alone.
Many of those calipers are pretty good still a .0005".
Tachometer? I have been con-verting those Chinese tachometers to use AAA cylindrical cells.
Piggyback mount a 2 x AAA battery holder onto the Tach case. The battery holder also has a positive slide type on/off switch. AAA cells are 1200 mAH and dirt cheap everywhere. The coin cells are under 200 mAH.
Piggy back AAA holder
Also add a lens shade, made from a Sharpie marker cover.
And exchange the factory lens for an optical grade, acrylic lens. As a result, readings can be reliably made at much greater distances than with the stock setup. Batteries last years. Made these changes for several friends. All have been very pleased with the results. I have plenty of the AAA holders on hand if you need one or three!

I decided to break in the new black and gold box Saito 30-s, it's a dandy. I was anticipating mid 10's but got a pleasant surprise.
Saito 30-s new in black and gold box
Fuel====Wildcat 10% with 18% full syn.
Prop ===Bolly Clubman 9.5 x 6
Plug===Glow Devil 4c for Saito and Enya
Exhaust==stock
Idle in the 2,400 range, not final
Four clicks under peak
Full peak, on the next click it slows.

Done a lot of that work, often much bigger.
Heavy machine repair usually involves making your own replacement parts. That vertical turret lathe in the video is actually a rather small one.
The VTL where I worked started at four foot chucks and ran up to 10 or 12 foot diameter chucks.
Slottters are a lot like shapers, both are used as shown to cut internal keyways. Final fitting of tapered keys was done by hand filing the fit. Inspectors wanted at least 90% contact along all surfaces when seated. A lot of very close filing.
The biggest horizontal lathe that I ran was a 38 inch swing 10 feet between centers and 9 inch bore thru the spindle. That was far from the biggest lathe there!
You sure didn't want to make a mistake at any point! Parts that size are not only expensive but can do extreme damage if they come unhinged!
