Saito's New Engine: FG-90R3
#576
I didn't change the voltage, that is what it went down to after 6 hours of use.
I had this engine modified, part of the mods was the timing which should be 30 degrees BTDC. Stock from Saito they are arounf 40 or 45 degrees which is very advanced and aggressive, might give you a bit more on the top end but makes it a very lumpy and poor performing at lower RPM.
Upon checking mine #1 was 40, #2 30, and #3 was 33.
I'll fit the MMM timing hub which will have all at 30 degrees BTDC.
Have to get a new hub locating pin as I snapped it pulling the hub, was not out enough. New one plus original hub washer and nut on the way from MMM.
Happy New Year to all. Stay safe.

Question to those which disassembled this engine:
Is it possible to remove back plate without damaging the gasket?
I like to inspect crankcase but without having spare gasket I'm affraid to touch anything.

Ran the engine again yesterday and it had a bad miss till it got over 4500RPM. I re-did the tappets, valves for you septics, cleaned the oil from plugs, they are new.
Tried tuning it out without success then about 8pm I checked the voltage on the 2S LiION ignition battery, 5.6V, it had about 6 hours of use on that charge. I suspect that is the problem.
Will be checking the timing later today to ensure it is set at 30 degrees. If not I will fit the MMM timing hub and adjust to 30.

Today I made an inspection of the crankcase after 1st full season with few dozen of flights and I'm satisfied with findings. All is well greased and looks ok. Lubricating nipple fitted by Saito is in right place. Oil drops exactly where it should, on to the crankshaft with master rod and linked conrods.
All 3 spark plugs are the same colour with black stain, what tells me that engine is running slightly rich. I'm satisfied with performance so I'm not going to lean mixture.

Darod, looks nice and clean in there. What oil & % mix are you using?
I'm still waiting on the hub parts to arrive before fitting the MMM timing ring, setting timing and running it again.
cheers

darod, thanks for the pics on the location of the upper lube exit point. When I tear mine down for inspections, I will add the lube point and nipples to both of my fg90r3 engines .

Those temps and rpm look fine to me. Temps could be a little cooler. But a lot depends on the air temp that day. If it was 90F air temp, those are good numbers. If it was 50F...I might worry about hotter days.
I like RPMs around 6500 in the air. Temps on warm day around 225F. This is not a cheap motor. Be nice to it.
Also, Depending on the plane, open up those cowl flaps...and use baffles.
Good job.

if i want to place a temp sensor wire around one of the cylinders which one is best to check and where on the cyl should the wire be placed.. i have spektrum telem rx for reading in flight.
also does the newest 90 need a hub ring swapped to correct timing or has saito addressed the issue and fixed it on this motor stock

#1 is in fact quite good on mine, it is mainly #2 that gets hotter. I expect that will settle down once the engine has more time on it. So far it has have about 6 hours of ground running, this will suffice till it goes in the model.
What is with the new layout of the RCU website? I really do not like it one bit.

Just wondering if this engine was selling at $1499 last year. I had a note on my desk for that price, but now it's $1699. Let me know if I'm correct in this price change. BTW, does Saito ever have sales on their engines? Thanks

Here in Germany, the prices have also risen from €1520 to €1750, the motor now costs.

so now the prices are high enough and you still need some mods installed after purchase i am going with a ums radial from c and h ignitions.. better support and i can get a 5 cyl for not much more investment. has the ring exhaust also included.

most of it is the cost of transportation.
While the transport of a standard 40-foot container from Shanghai to Rotterdam in January 2020 still cost around 2,000 US dollars, freight rates are now (13.01.2022) at over 14,000 dollars (World Container Index).
And the end user pays for that

xicoy and others have gone to air pkg individual or small multi packs inside a box for shipping engines. no container needed and they take too long to get here and in our hands that way. it ads 60.00 to each turbine xicoy sends here. long way from the price increase saito put on these. big importers only think one way and that is container and large profits. ums still works with dealers to keep things coming in steady and at only an increase as needed to cover upcharges.
