RE: Great planes ultimate 160
I do this on all my gas engines. This is what twn is talking about.
You can get the brass fitting from your local hardware store in the plumbing department, solder it to the center of the plate, drill a hole through it, and seal the other hole in the plate with silicone. Attach a tygon or neoprene hose to it and run it inside the fuselage. Remember to remove the plate to do the soldering and drilling.

"Remember to remove the plate to do the soldering and drilling."
LOL....I was wondering if anyone was going to mention that!!!
In the same view of the midrange "burble" a friend of mine had the same problem with his DL. He ordered the next size larger Walbro carburetor and it seemed to fix the problem.
More expense than the vent line though.

Just checked the Tower Hobby website and it's still listed there, as it is on Great Planes website. Where did you get your information?

Hello: Ok the cowel is installed, sweated the cutout, but again the pictures in the forum to the rescue, checked the balance via the handle method, and I am getting a slight nose down attitude, which is what I normally like to see for balance. That cowel tool sure works great for the install.

RE: Great planes ultimate 160
Can anybody who has a smoke system in their Ultimate share with me a few pics of your install. I am especially having trouble deciding what size gas and oil tanks to use. I was thinking maybe 2, 12 oz. tanks side by side, but any way I look at it removal of some of the fuse bulkhead plywood would be necessary. I am also planning on using the Sullivan Skywriter and I am uncertain as to what muffler to use. I have a DLE55 motor.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks!!

RE: Great planes ultimate 160
My setup is a DA 50cc. I use a 20 oz gas tank (which sits where the servo bay is in the booklet) and a 10 oz smoke tank. the smoke tank sits behind the gas tank (with 2 servos between). I had to make a shelf for the smoke tank.

First off, the stock DL muffler isn't very good, some report the pipe weld to be weakl, and breaks off.
Secondly, get a Silent Beauty (inverted Pitts style) and a RCS Smoke Injector (#42) from Troy Built Models.
Next, get yourself a tap & drill for installing that smoke injector (ask TBM what size you'll need, I forgot).
Now, drill & tap your hole in the area just past where the mounting bolts are located. Reasoning is, THAT will be the very hottest location so the smoke oil gets vaporized the best. Where most smoke mufflers already have theirs located, is in the end of the round portion, and that area is a few degrees cooler.
Looking at my photos, you'll also notice the Tygon-smoke line (yellow-black) has an anti-siphon fitting. That's bit important to keep from loosing your prime.
Looking at my tanks, you'll notice I used 2-24oz tanks, one atop the other, with tongue depresser sticks to brace the sides.
Lastly, after you get yours setup, you'll find out what I mean when I say; for smoke, go 2-4 times the size of your gas tank. You'll EAT UP smoke oil FAR FAR faster than you gas!!!
btw-fwiw; I'm selling one of my GP ultimates......

Thanks for the help. It now gives me some perspective on what can be done. It's too bad I have already purchased my Ultimate, otherwise I would have considered yours. It is really nice, especially the graphics. Where did you get the graphics? I will check out the TBM website today for the muffler and pump, although I noticed that you used the Sullivan. Do you prefer one over the other?
Thanks,
Bob

I'm sure you are scratching your head over my comment on smoke pumps. I thought the TBM injector was a pump and not a fitting. Sorry, I'm learning...

One more question, how did you manage to stack two 24 oz. tanks and still get the wing to seat properly. If each tank is 2 3/4" high I can't see how this would work without removing more bulkhead and interfering with the cabanes.
Thanks,
Bob

RE: Great planes ultimate 160
Bob,
They're a tight fit for sure, but I only opened up the wood that directly touched/held the stock tank in stock configuration.
The lower wing does touch the tanks, but will compress down, with no damage to anything.
Look back in this thread about 2 years back, and I might have other photos with tanks out. I'm not removing them now, I just put new lines on everything.

For a 50cc engine 20 oz gas is ample and willl give you 15-20 minutes flying time with fuel left to spare.
For smoke, remember it should not be on all the time, and its dead weight. I use 10 oz tank.
Check out this "FREE Smoke Tips " page by TME to calculate what size smoke tank you really need.
http://www.tmenet.com/smktips.htm
I know a DA muffler will not fit on a DLE engine, but a great smoke muffler is DA's pitts smoke muffler (Slimline product). It has an internal heater for the oil and the smoke jet dumps right on a hot metal mesh inside the muffler. Great smoke output!! One thing though, when breaking in the engine the petroleum based fules (used for breaking in) can clog the smoke jets. They can be cleaned out with a .028 drill bit. Once the engine breaks in, a synthetic lube fuel will not have the carbon clogging problem.

Tiger, two 24 oz tanks in this plane can be a burden as far as weight if they are both full.

My Da-50 has NO problem hauling them around, and fly's just fine!

Invert your choice of tanks - go 20 oz/smoke and 10-12oz/gas and that would sound better.

RE: Great planes ultimate 160
Hmm. I would like to use smaller tanks so they fit side by sie a little closer to the CG. Maybe I'll compromise and use 2 14oz. tanks. My goal is to mount the smoke pump on top of the tanks and the pump battery ove the CG.
Codfish, thanks for the TME link. I'll check it out. Also, I have heard lot of good things about the slimline smoke muffler and the DA50 slimline will fit my dle55.

RE: Great planes ultimate 160
That's what I did. I used Dubro tanks with the funny bull nose in the front and created a capture mount using some triangle stock and light ply to suspend them down the fuse.
I cut out the old tank mount to get them to fit.
