When I fitted a velocity-stack to my SA100 I noticed no difference in performance (power wise) but I get about a 15%-20% improvement in fuel economy - which is significant over the course of a weekend. My stack has already paid for itself :-)

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
What could cause high fuel consumption in a Saito 82? I have one that I purchased new and has always provided 6 minutes of run time with a 10oz tank. I recently purchased another Saito 82 that needed some repairs and it gets double the run time in the same plane with the same prop! The original motor has 6 gallons of fuel thru it and and it has always burned a consistent amount of fuel (unfortunately a large amount). What should I check?

Your Low Speed nedle is too rich, it controls 85 to 90% of the throttle range and has a huge effect on the economy or the lack of it. Peak the HS needle (and leave it there temporarily) and then lean the LS needle 1/8th turn at a time but check the transition and full throttle operation after every other change.

Jimmy,
remember to wait at least 8 seconds or so after adjusting the low end needle before testing transition, many newbies to four strokes and Saito's in particular forget this.

.........First, there is only about 4 to 5 mm of clearance between the stack and the fuse. Is this adequate or might it affect the engine's ability to draw in air..........
Thanks in advance!

Thanks Dave and Hobbsy,
I do wait for mixture adjustments to take effect before assessing the state of tune. I have run the low speed needle so lean the the engine would sometimes bog on takeoff and it still used a lot of fuel. Regardless, the problem must be with the fuel mix and involve the carb.

Hi all,
just been giving my FA-80GK a run as the weather is improving, might get out flying soon!
It's only had about 1/2 gallon through so still running in.
Fuel Southern Modelcraft 5% (15% synth 2% castor)
Prop JXF 13x8
WOT 8130rpm (richened up 400rpm = 8500 peak)
Reliable idle (no glow) 2100rpm
8 deg C

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
Hi
How are you guys doing. Does anybody know if there is a way to switch the needle valve adjustment on my Saito 91 to the other side without effecting engine performance. The reason i want to do this is so my adjustment sits on the top of my cowl instead of on the bottom.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks Scott

You just take out the screws holding the carb to the engine, pull the carb off, rotate it and put it back on. It should not affect your performance in any way.

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
Hello. I am looking for some help. I have a saito 150. I wanted to send it in to have it serviced. It is leaking a lot of burnt fuel. some of it even comes out the front of the cowling. This does not seem normal. Any recommendations? Thanks. Eric

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
I am running a 18x6W APC prop at 2 1/2 turns out on the high end needle. Usually I use 25% cool power but they were out of it so I bought 20% cool power helo fuel. The motor has plenty of power. I use it on a 70" Peakmodel Edge 540. The problem I have with the motor is it is very messy, looses power over time in the air and I have to idle the motor down to land. It seems to run leaner after it warms up. I am using a H glow plug.

Hobby, I know this question has been asked a hundred times but here I am asking it again. Which stack do I order for a 91? I find Horizon extremely difficult to get information from. Thay really don't tell you anything except the price.
Thanks,
Larry

JimmyH,
Have you (or anyone else) EVER adjusted the HS needle, on the fuel-guzzling .82, at less than FULL-THROTTLE???

Now that I've been thinking about it, maybe the difference is due to throttle management. Since the 2nd motor was just rebuilt, I had been flying it easy to break it in. The discrepancy between motors is HUGE though. I wonder if anyone has an approximate flight duration for a Saito 82 with a 14x4W prop with a 10oz tank? The gas hog will run for 6 minutes on 10oz, the newer motor was getting double that!

JimmyH,
The old hands say to expect a fuel burn of one ounce/minute/cubic-inch in a well-tuned Saito. This would be about 12 minutes on a ten-ounce tank and is apparently what you are getting with your other .82. This is at full-throttle. Do you fly at full-throttle all of the time?
Does the engine make a lot of smoke (actually oil and unburned fuel) while in the air? If so, it is getting too much fuel or the exhaust valve may not be seating. If it blows a lot of residue out the breather, or even back through the intake, you may be dealing with a poorly-seating intake valve (probably not likely) or a bad ring/cylinder bore. Perhaps, but that sounds like a stretch also. Have you adjusted the valves and ascertained that a pushrod is not in upside down? The end of the pushrod that rides in the adjusting screw in the rocker-arm should be slightly tapered. If not, it is upside down and will bounce out of the cup.
If you can see a noticeable smoke trail at full throttle the engine is just getting too much fuel. My well-tuned .82 leaves almost no smoke trail, even at full-throttle. It left a very noticeable smoke trail as I was learning to tune it. Looks sort of cool, but you pay for it with a high rate of fuel burn. That .82 easily does two 12 to 15 minute flights on a 16oz. tank. That is with widely varied throttle usage is a sport (Not 3-D) airplane.
Saitos will run well when set up far too rich and yours is certainly running far too rich for some reason.
Good luck, keep us posted.
