I installed a 72 on a plane about a month ago. I used this mount and it was perfect.

Also, how do I join club saito - I've got 2 -91's an old 120 and a new 125 - wouldn't have anything else.

Jim,I have been away playing with big planes for awhile, got to try your muffler, Awesome my man, excellent acoustics in the big hangers, brilliant and yes it does give an increase in the RPM!! But I went to bed with tears in my eyes after reading what had happened to our friend Bill Robison.. You guys said it all right about him, everything we instintively knew about Bill was summed up by his sons last post. The world is one good man gone.

Jason,
I couldn't agree with you more about Bill. He will be missed.
I am glad you like the TurboHeader. If you ran it in a hanger, I guess the sound did echo!!

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
Could you shorten the intake manifold on a Saito and mount the carb right next to the intake, ala Laser engines? Has anyone tried this? Did it give any type of performance improvements?
I don't imagine it would be too hard to simply cut the intake manifold, so long as you could find a way to keep the carb solidly mounted.

Yes, no, yes, no
You would need to cut the tube in a straight portion in order to get a good seal on the carb.
It might help throttle response but lower the low end torque and increase idle speed.
I doubt there would be enough top end performance improvement to be able to measure?

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
Well took the 4* out a couple weekends ago for a little testing with the 1.00. The prior adventure ended with the header breaking at the last thread inside the head. Was strange considering it's never hit the ground, anyway, My buddy put the header back on without the muffler to here it run and we instantly could tell there were a few more RPM's and it was "ALOT" snappier. I drilled a hole in the header then taped it too accept a pressure nipple and took it back out the following week for some testing. All I can say is HOLY$&@!!! It was like a completely different motor, different sound (more like a YS) and it was instantly noticeable the power gain we got from it as well. The only problem was the solder that was holding the nipple on melted off almost insantly after the motor was fired the first time. So as a result it was loosing a little bit of pressure aroung the threads and it would start stuttering on a long vertical climb. Has anyone else tried this and what were the results?
Does anyone know where to get a velocity stack for the .62? Is it just me or is the .72 the only one that has the stack on it from the factory? We have a .62, .72, 1.00, 1.25 and the the rest never came with them. Strange considering its supposed to help atomize the fuel better for a better burn and fuel economy.

Hmmm... I've had my 72 for almost 4 years now. It didn't come with one.
Also, the 72 has a bit of a weird idle, like it has a monster cam or something. It will idle dependably at 2300/2400, but it has that big radical cam sound. I like that on my Stearman though...

My .82 GK came with one.
So are you saying your 1.00 had a big increase in power from not running a muffler?

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
Exactly, I could not believe the difference in the power. It gave it another 500-700 rpm's. The torque was the most noticeable though. I have always used an APC 14X8 at about 8800-9000 max rpm and it had great vertical, but after trying it without the muffler I easily doubled the vertical ability at the same rpm. Can't wait to try 30% nitro in it, been using cool power 15% (green). Prob could've gotten more but I don't like to go much higher on the rpms. Here's a pic of what it looks like.

I have never heard of removing the muffler on a Saito producing that much of a gain. Did you measure the RPM increase? I don't doubt you, I'm just trying to quantify everything.

Yeah, but that lope sounds cool !, and it really fits the old Bipe personality. I get a kick out of it when people say "it's loadin up ! it's gunna die !" when in reality, it will sit there and idle at 23/2400 rpm until it runs out of fuel, or I shut it off. There's nothing like a Saito...

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
yes, the RPM hit about 9800 as it would only go about 9200 before. I am as shocked as anyone else is, I don't know if there would be any draw backs to it all. I put about 6 tanks through it that day with no changes in performance.

My .72 idles well at 1900, but it isn't totally reliable every single time it has to idle. I had let it get that low without realizing it and it died on short final once after a day of flying. Cranked it back up and tached it to see. I prefer around 2300 for reliability, or at least for my own peace of mind.
Speaking of low idles, W8YE has a .56 that you almost can't hear run. It is that low. His is the smoothest running Saito I've ever heard. He didn't mention the idle RPMs.

I'm with you, my original Saito, a Saito .50GK bought and ran in the late 90's, was the best and lowest idling Saito that I have owned so far. And they have all been great.

Some of those older Saito's idle really well. I have a GK and a Silver 50 and they both are "D" models which are pretty old. The silver one I've had for some ten - twelve years but it was old then. I've only had the new looking golden knight for about 5 years. The Silver one has very little time on it but the Golden Knight has a lot more time. I've been using the silver one regularly the last couple years but never did anything with the GK except run it on the bench.
Something I noticed about these two engines is that the center point of valve overlap period on the cam is not on top dead center. It's about 5 degrees before TDC.

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
That allows the fuel to be fully ignited when the piston reaches TDC and produces the strongest power stroke, if it was right on TDC it wouldn't get a full burn on the fuel before it started to exit the chamber and would result in the loss of power and unburned fuel..
