Tango,

Yes I looked over it VERY CAREFULLY.........

I am going to change the covering slightly. The plane is plum and yellow Monocote in a pattern that is very similar to the picture on the Ultrasport 60 kit box. The bottom is yellow and black checkerboard with large squares. I REALLY don't like the black squares....[:'(] and since the kit came with an almost full roll of plum Monocote in the box, I'm going to use it to cut out plum squares to cover the black ones.
Good afternoon Fellas,

I have been able to sneak in some time to work on my US1000, but I've run into a slight problem here and there which is slowing me down. Evidently I didn't look close enough at the plane when I first started to work on it. In my haste to get the plane finished, I installed the motor mount where the builder marked the fire wall. As it turned out, the motor sits too far to the left and slightly too high....[:'(] It looks bad enough with a spinner on it to make me want to redo it. So that's what I'm going to do. Man, I hate it when I do stupid stuff like that.....[>:]

I've also decided to leave the black and yellow checkerboard on the bottom of the plane. No two black squares on the plane are the same size and I'm not about to measure and cut each one individually.....[X(] I REALLY need to get this thing finished because spring time is finally coming.....YIIPPPEEEE

It may take a little time before I can get back on the plane however. My brother asked me if I would put his Parkzone P47 together for him. I have one with retracts and flaps and it is AWESOME, but that's a different subject.

I will post some pics of my US1000 when I am finished with it.

David

If the spinner is off by just a little bit try using different thickness washers behind the motor mount and the firewall, another choice is to just cut off the cowling and realign and reglue to meet up to the spinner and make it look right and then sand it and make it blend it back in. I have done that before where i would cut off the cowling and take blocks of wood just like in the building stages and redone the cowling so i hope that this helps and gives some food for thought.

I would like to join the brotherhood. I had a Us 40 a few years ago. It was the best flying plane in my hanger and I logged a few hundred flights on it before i tore off the covering and "bashed" it a tad. I took out the slimeing ST 40, and extended the nose a bit so I could shoehorn a OS 70surpass FS. After rechecking all glue joints, and recovering the plane, I must have put another 100 or so flights on it before I sent it to a new home. To my belief, its still flying today, but not sure. I would love to get another, 40 or 60 or even a 1000, a beautiful flying plane in any size.

Hey...guess you could add me to the list!?

I'm building the US .60 for an 'ole flyin' buddy...

Got a question...
He included an Evolution .60NX (that's the one in the .46 size case )
The engine weighs 14 oz. w/o muffler...and if using the Jett made tuned muffler sold by Horizon, it will still be substantially lighter (about 4 to 6 oz. ) than the O.S. .61SF as shown on the plans.

I'm wondering if it will be tail heavy with this engine / muffler combination? I really don't want to add any dead lead wt.
There's a lot of balsa in this old school construction kit....that's OK by me...it's a very solidly built airplane, but a lot of it is behind the C.G.

I'm thinking we might be better off to use a std. size .61 like an FX or maybe an FSR, or something along those lines?

The US usually needs a little tail weight, so you should be ok. And if you DO have to add dead weight, don't sweat it. The US flies better with a little weight behind it.

Sorry about this guys for not talking about an Ultra Sport but i did such a good job converting this I wanted to share, This is a Venus 40 with a little bit of a change. The story goes is that a fellow modeler bought this plane new and flown it and started to get tired of it but didnt really have intentions of doing harm to it but one of those things that one day the engine flamed out and he had a dead stick and landed it way out in the high grass and so the tall grass did its number on the covering on the wing and damaged the fuse beyond repair. The modeler decided that he did not want to repair it and then i volunteered to try to fix it if he gave it to me and so i took it home. I bought another fuse from tower hobbies before they stopped carring it and I reused everything from the cowling to the canopy to the tailfeathers and i also had an idea to install retracts so since the covering on the wing was in bad state i stripped the wing and then cut into the wing to start modifications to put in retracts. The end result is what i call Venus 40 Retracted. Maybe you guys can tell me what you think. I have a youtube vid of the retracts in the mock up stage and i will post that as well.

Even with changing it to a taildrager? I just built the tail today and was thinking of taking it to the drill press and shedding some weight, the tail seems heavy and with no front gear I was thinking it would come out tail heavy...
Has anyone done any lightning holes on the tail section and what was the results? This is my first US, so I am all ears..

Retracts, any good recommendations so I can get them ordered.. I am thinking mechanical but am not against the idea of air, I'm sure I could find room for a air tank....

Speaking of retracts, I just had the covering on the bottom of My US1000s wing rip off, so I was thinking of adding retracts before replacing the monokote.. What retracts would be good for the US 1000?

also, had an idea for a twin Ultrasport. How about an P82 Ultra? Or would it be an Ultra P82? Ultra Sport P82? What ever, you get the idea... Anyone thought about that?

Craig.

I have been thinking about doing that my self either with the Ultra Sport or the GP Mustang, I just have to find a job first to fund it and I hope to be working to be able to buy the kit before Great Planes stops makeing the kit of the P-51 so i can build my dream P-82 twin mustang, and or to build a twin P-82 style Ultra Sport, who ever builds one they will have a one of a kind. I would certainly build it and still use a sixty size engine. My imagination is running wild. I wonder if Great Planes is reading this and would like to "suprise me with a couple of kits" so I can build my dream, I only need two kits of the Ultra Sport 60 and I'll do the rest
I have an older Tower Kaos both 40 and 60 size kit in the box waiting to be built, which some of you kit builders may or may not know but the tower kaos kits are basically a stripped down Ultra Sport and slightly changed to resemble a kaos. I have a big time want to change over the 60 size kit to a twin engine and tricycle retracts, now only if i can find a nice job....
This picture that im including belongs to a flyer that I dont know who he is but this is what i wanna build.

Craig, here is what I'm in the process of building right now. An Ultra-Sport sixty kit was used to make all the parts needed to build this one, while keeping the kit intact for later in life. This will be # 5 in my U.S. family & I really will need to take a break from building these things for a while.

How do you find time to fly. One would think with the mods ass well as the intricate graphics you are useing, you must be spending tons of time in your workshop.

Keep it up Bill. Looking super great. Can't wait to see your twin finished.

Thanks Mike, it's been a long time since I built a plane with such a heavy duty tail like that, it's old school for sure.... I plan on putting a ST75 on mine just for a little extra vummmmm, was going to use a old OS60 I have, but Tower has the 3pay on ST's right now so I think I am going to click me up one...

Whoa, is that I Tri-Motor Ultra sport U are Building there?? I can't wait to see the finished product..

BTW, Guys like you really Make me mad, First of all, it takes me years to finish One model, Much less 5 or 6.. and 2. I am lucky to get a nice "Star Burst" type of monokote finish on my planes, Much less that Cool looking color scheme you have on that plane in the last picture..

Awesome Planes... Thanks for showing us the Pics.

Craig.

You're using Robart Oleo struts in a Spring Air retract? That might solve a very large problem I've been having with the Spring Air company. In mid January I ordered $42-worth of 3/16" struts/strut adapters from Spring Air......but they have NOT sent me the goods. But if I can put a Robart oleo strut into my Spring Air retract.....problem solved.

Yes you can put Robart Robo-Struts into Spring Air retracts. That's what I'm using on my Ultra Sport 60.
