RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
I just started to break in my 450 radial seems a bit stubborn, runs at half throttle till it loads up and quits. putters at low but doesnt run. This is a new engine and I havent figured out the settings yet so I am just looking for someone who has run one of these before, so I can compare settings
I have a 300 (sweet runner ) a 180 (mmm nice) and a 45 (what a nice little ticker)

I'm a potential Saito owner-- for more years than I care to mention, I've wanted a multi-cylinder RC model engine. Look like I can finally afford a 3-cyl, either the standard or the Golden Knight edition. Question: Is the Knight worth the $65 premium? This will be a 'working' engine, not just a display piece. I have several unbuilt scale ARFies that can use one of these guys, and plan to fly it with my other planes (all 4-stroke, non-Saito singles).
Also: What's the downside to this engine?
Thanks for your opinions,
George Scott.

Gescott,
The GK is a beautiful engine, but if you are going to cowl the engine, it's not worth the cost. if it's going to be hanging out in the breeze, especially if the black and gold will blend in with the rest of your color scheme, it's a nice touch.
Is the difference really $65? I thought it was more like $25 or $30. I'll have to check the Horizon Hobby website.

I was surprised also. Check out Hobbytown; $734.99 for the standard version, $799.99 for the pretty one. And the standard is in stock. What price beauty?

Don...I don't have experience with that particular engine...just a whole lot of Saito singles and a few twins.
Generally, the low speed mixture is set very rich at the factory, so having to lean the low speed needle on a Saito is a (pretty much ) sure thing.
Some of them we have leaned a couple turns or more! So...

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
There are a lot of you using the Saito 82 . My question is:
How do you stop the stock muffler vibrating loose in flight?
My setup is a 90 deg elbow from the engine case with a bent manifold into the cast stock 82 muffler. I am using lock nuts on all joint points/ admittedly only one on each as the remaining thread is usually not enough to house two locking nuts.
I have tried high temp thread lock (the Red stuff), and even stainless steel wire locking, which is tricky as there is not much to lock against but the engine vibration just seems to fatigue the wire after a while which then snaps. I’m loath to thread lock the engine case thread for obvious reasons but even the other threads undo themselves after 3 or so flts. It getting to be a real pain as I just get the needle valve set up sweetly and then have to take the cowl off to attend to the loose muffler.
There must be a solution out there. What are you all doing that I’m not?

I have an 80, and never had the muffler come loose on it without loctite... That 82 must vibrate alot... I assume that you balanced the prop good, and it has never been in a crash where the forward section of the crank could have been bent slightly...

Chrispeace,
The muffler on my 82 also came loose quite often.
I solved it by some advice on this forum.
Three winds of plumbers teflon tape or teflon dental floss (Sold in the USA as GLIDE).
Tighten the nuts as well as you can. Then, run the engine until it is quite hot.
Then, retighten the nuts.
I hope it works for you.

I've never had a muffler come loose. I just throw some plumber's tape on the threads and tighten it down as tight as I can possibly get it with a 6" or so wrench.

At nearly 7000 replies and 280 pages, I would think the "Club" threads should be set up as their own forum/chapters.

The proper way to do it is too let it warm up to operating temps then shut it down and retighten. You can tighten it down until it won't move anymore and after it warms up and the threads contract slightly you will be able to get another 1/4 turn on it. I've never had one come loose after doing it this way. The trick is doing it while it's still very warm so be sure to use a glove to hold it.

I just had an interesting conversation with a friend. He has a new Saito .91. It's never run right. Had very low power on its first run, and even less a few weeks later when he ran it again.
As it turns out, he had accidentally used some gasoline tubing from the muffler pressure tap to the tank. It swelled up and blocked the flow, to the point where the engine could not draw fuel from the tank.
Granted this is an unusual case, and yes, he does know not to mix fuel and gasoline tubing, but it was an honest error. I printed this to show one of the more extreme examples of what could cause engine problems on the Saito, or on any engine. Yes, it is a very rare case - but we've all made mistakes along the line,
Bob

That happened to me on a Saito .72. W8YE was visiting at the field and it drove us nuts until he figured it out. The inner portion had softened and would collapse when the engine was running. Fast forward a month or so later, and he was frustrated at not being able to fill up his plane. He borrowed my hand crank and the same thing happened. His line in his fuel jug was collapsing and he changed it out. The same thing happened to me a few months ago too.
