RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
My 72 should be here in a few days. After break in what should I do and use for after run oil. Mobil 1 or automatic transmission fluid is the two I hear most about.
Should I put any in the cylinder via the glow hole? How about the carb? Or just a couple of ounces in the breather valve?

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
I've been using about 1/2 oz Mobile 1 added to the crankcase vent on my saito's 8 of them and never had an issue.
I do however prop them over by hand prior to start up to insure no hydraulic lock from me putting too much oil. Then I spin them with the starter and fire them up. I allow a minute or so for warm up at 1/2 throttle to burn out the after run, the full throttle check go fly. Jim

I never use after run oil, and I havn't had any problems. What I do is after flying, I drain the tank, start the engine and run the remaining fuel out. Works for me... This 72 has been runing fine for 4 years now, and it has never seem anything but fuel.

Exhaust Nipple Thread -- What is it on a .72? I'd like to run without the muffler and I want to fabricate a header that redirects the exhaust 90 Deg. from the outlet.

Dear God you guys won't believe what just happened to my .82.
It blew up. Not literally, but close enough.
I was running it on the bench today to try and clear out the air tool oil I had been using as an after run. Hobbsy thought it might have been causing a bit of build up and thus some valve leaking. I cleared it out and ran the engine for a few minutes and voila, that must have been it. The engine was running like a Swiss watch. Since I still had about 12oz. of fuel in the tank I decided to go ahead and let the engine run it out - more break-in time is always good and I don't like to mix fuel that has already been dispensed back into the main container. I peak the engine, 9900RPM with an APC 14x6. I idle it, peak the idle, it dies when slamming the throttle to full. Richen it up a bit, transition is flawless. I richen the engine to 9600RPM and set the throttle to around 6000RPM. I am about to go inside to get some water while the engine runs the fuel out when I hear a noise like someone letting up a clutch too fast without enough throttle - a metallic DINK sound, sort of. The engine stops dead. I go to turn the prop and I hear some rattling. Take intake valve cover off, looks fine. Take exhaust valve cover off... umm, big problem. This is no bueno! A piece of the rocker arm falls out, the spring goes flying who knows where, I can't find the valve retainer and the valve guide (you know, the big brass thing permanently inserted into the head) is not in the head. It's resting in the place where the valve spring should be. The valve itself is still in the cylinder. Maybe the other pieces are too.
Anyway, I think this engine is toast. Only 1.5 gallons through it, and it was a replacement for another .82 that I could not get running right. To top it off this .82 must have been one of the "good ones", in that it seemed to pull really strong numbers relative to other .82s.
I'm not upset at all. Mostly, I think I'm still in too much shock to be upset.
I will put up some pictures later tonight when I find my digital camera.
*sigh*

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
Yes, but I think it broke as the result of a failed valve retainer.
I have a couple of very, very bad pictures, so instead of posting them I'll just explain.
I believe that the valve retainer clip thingie broke or came loose. This allowed the valve to drop into the cylinder. When the piston came up, it hit the valve, forcing it up, but because of the angle, caused it to bend. This bend prevented it from moving further up through the valve guide. Something had to give, so all the pressure forced the valve guide out. When this happened, it must have pushed up on the rocker arm and snapped it right in half.
Of course, I could be wrong, but this seems logical to me.

Did the rocker arm break? I sure hope this does not happen to my 82

Bill,
I have been reading this thread for over a hour, if I keep that up I will probably be fired. I could use some help. I have a fairly new FA-100 on my Ultra Stick 60. It initially stared up fine, blows lots of smoke. Let it run a minute or so, with glow on, take glow off, increase throttle and it starts to up revs then seems to run out of gas and stalls. The motor will not start then, unless primed. I have many other Saito's - FA-45 to 220. This has not been an issue. I do not have any other 100's. I am using medium fuel line. Should I be using bigger? The fuel tank is in the normal position for the Stick, the motor is mounted upright. I am using 10% nitro with Castor/syn mix at 18%. Where is a good base line for high speed and low speed adjustments, so I can start over? I hope this isn't too boring for you guys but any information would surely help me out.

Oh man, I am sorry about Bill. I was still in the 100's of pages, I decided to start at the end and work forward. He seemed like a great guy, very knowledgable and easy with free advice.
Anyway, thanks for the reply. Any idea where I should put the needle valves to start over when I have checked the intake? Do you use large scale tubing or medium?

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
Does anyone know when the saito 220 or 36 gasser will be released? and how much will it go for?
I am curious how the price will compare to the 1000.00 RCS or Mackay 50cc gas 4-stroke?
Yes I searched the other forums and no one knows a price or release date....... DOes Japan already have them for sale?
Also, does anyone know what the power of the 170R relate to a single 4-stroke saito?
Would it compare to a 120?????
Thanks
Justin

I haven't found a glow engine of any size that truly "needs" large fuel line. Medium will be just fine on your Saito 1.00.

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
Received my 72 today. Just want to make sure on the break in process.
Some light oil in the breather tube and down the push rods.
15 % fuel
13x6 prop
2 ½ turns out on the high speed needle valve
Throttle at ¼-1/3
Run at 4000 RPM
Run 4 tanks or 40 minutes.
If this is ok I’ll check back after the 40 minutes.
Thanks.

Sounds pretty good except the high speed needle valve may need to be opened a little.

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
I have a 150, 100 and 72.
All are great engines.
The 72 was used and I replaced the rod, bearings and backplate.
I was surprised that I could not find the piston ring for that engine on the Horizon website.
I put it back together with the old ring and it seems fine.
Maybe I just did not know how to look for it.

Anybody on what type of o-ring goes into the head..... a Viton type or something? Maybe getting it with the gasket kit is the way to go then?
Thanks,
