RE: SHRIKE CLUB # 1
Nose heavy airplanes have really bad elevator response. I had a friend with an OS 32 on a Sig Wonder and it was dull until he got the CG back where it should be. Then it was wild.

Not sure if there is a "standard". The final weight would depend on the engine, radio equipment, balance lead, and construction techniques. Early in the thread I suggested that people "weigh in". I remember seeing a few people post wieghts. Mine weighs 2 pounds 4 ounces without fuel. I've seen a couple posts from RC-FIEND saying his was 2 pounds 12 ounces, but that was before he switched from the .15 to the .28 and added a couple C cell batteries as ballast.

Before I covered mine I pinned the fins straight and at an angle. Looks much better angled. Several people have added landing gear. I've yet to read positive comments about including gear from any of them. They've pretty much concluded that the plane flies better without gear. Will yours be lighter? I guess it depends on how heavy your battery pack is. It should be nice to not have to deal with adjusting the engine or cleaning the slime, but I think I would miss the sound of the engine unwinding at the bottom of those dives. Mine actually stays very clean, the pipe directs all the exhaust away from the plane.

Maybe we should have a Carolinas Shrike fly-in. A couple guys in my club are thinking of building them after seeing mine fly. I think one of the speed demons is a bit jealous since it appears my Shrike is faster than his Patriot. We've yet to have them both at the field on the same day, so it's just perception right now. It could be that the Shrike just seems faster since it's smaller.
Since you're new to this, choose a larger diameter, but smaller pitch prop. It'll give you more thrust and less speed. As you get comfortable, you can reduce the diameter and increase the pitch to make it faster.

The first Shrike that I built I modified it for landing gear. I wouldn't recommend it. I had a 9x5 prop on an OS 20 and I had almost no clearance between the prop and the ground when I landed. I had a prop strike on almost every landing. Also the weight of the landing gear really made the plane sluggish. On my second Shrike I left the landing gear off and I think that it flew much better without them.

Thanks for the info Ken. I'm pretty sure yours was one of the experiences I was citing. It's actually a pity the Shrike doesn't adapt better to landing gear, I think it would make it even more fun. I happen to have a set of .20 size retracts and I keep thinking that putting them in the Shrike could be interesting, but there's no way around the negative effect of the extra weight.
