O.S. 160 ?? 12 lbs ? take a shovel with you to the Field, i think you blow the Wings clean off, or tear it to peaces on landing, way over powered and heavy, mine is 8 lbs 2 oz with DLE 20 and is hot enough for me

Hi all, So i updated my ultimate by moving the elevator servos to the back and adding one so each half has its own servo and it all seemed to be in order. I balanced the plane again and all seemed well. I flew it today and it flew great for the first flight. Then on the second flight things got interesting. The second flight was going well and i flipped on the high rates to check out the expo setting and all seemed well with the hi rates flipped on. Then i flipped off the hi rates and things got interesting. The plane developed a roll to the left. The plan seemed to loose it trim and did not fly straight and level any more when brought back to level flight. It was trimmed out when i started and after i got done with the switched from hi rate back to low rate it seemed to develop the roll to the left. Not sure if the rudder or ailerons were off because i ended stalling the plan on approach back. It was focusing on trying to keep it level and then excute a somewhat controlled turn back to land. Well i lost a little to much speed and about 5 feet above the ground it started to stall and it was not a gracefull landing in the tall grass. Nothing seemed to be damaged but i was hoping have a clean landing so i could inspect and see what was going on to create the bank to the left. As i think about it it seems like the rudder was stuck and causing the turn to the left but i cannot be sure. The radio gear i am using is a 2.4 futaba 7c with a 5 cell on the reciever and i did a battery check and a range check and all was in order. Any idea of what could have caused this. I have a pull pull set up on the tail and that has been there since day one and given me no trouble. The change was to move the elevator servo to the rear and add a additional one. I am stumped on what caused it. after getting it back to the pits i check over everything and it seemed correct i will do a more in depth look tomorrow night. Any ideas of what to go look at or for would be greatly appreciated thanks.

Hi bigtom, I am glad to hesr that you brought it back safe. I also use two servos in the rear, at first I had some issues trying to level them perfectly. No matter how you hook them, I mean with an Y harness or separate channels, they always have a difference, depending on the way you fly, the since can be notifiable at high out low rates, I would suggest to use separate channels for each of the elevator servos (as I did) and calibrate its traveling and centering, I had to do it for a lot of time until they responded the same. If you are using ay harness, I bet that your problem resides there. Take a look there and see what happens.

Cheers.

It was great! This was my first time flying a biplane, or a giant scale. Was a little nervous but this bird handles so well. The OS160 has plenty of power, enough to hover though not quite enough for 3D...which is fine because I prefer scale flying. And this ultimate REALLY flies scale! It's fast but not cartoony fast. With its two wings and large tail, it flies on rails. But it's large control surfaces give it some serious control authority, it will snap roll like a power drill! Landings were fairly easy for a bird this heavy, I was careful to not let it slow down too much.

I had three flights, did some aerobatics but mainly I was just trying to get used to it's raw speed and precise controls. I enjoyed the low passes a lot, love the sound it makes when those huge wings rip across the sky at low altitude. Also did a couple of flat spins waaaay high up...if only I had smoke, it would have looked just like the full scale ones at the air shows. Can't wait to get back to the field! Also gonna look for options to get more power out of that 160, maybe 20% nitro and a tuned pipe if I can find a way to fit it. Oh yeah, I'm a HUGE ultimate fan now!

I was flying my Goldberg Sukhoi last year and the servo extensions for one of the ailerons got wrapped around the large rudder pull-pull servo arm. When I gave a high rate full rudder deflection it was yanked it out. The aileron was stuck deflected almost all the way to the right. I had to hold about 3/4 left to keep the plane level until I landed. No idea if this could have been what happened to you but worth checking out.

Finally, after a few months of desperate wait, my friend finished plastic surgery and redecoration of this Ultimate. If you remember, it had one wing , the empenage and part of the fuselage badly damaged.

Now, I am proud to introduce you its new look. I still have to install the engine, which would be a 26 CC, and electronics.

I hope you will enjoy it.

Good looking Ulti's, guys!

Big Tom...are you using digital's? If so you can program the center points. Make sure your trim is set for both channels too. In the Spektrum/JRs there is a way to slave the trim of one to another channel. I still have to read the manual to do that. I had the exact same thing happen to me..."why is it always rolling after I trim the elevator?!" It doesn't do that anymore.

Mine will be goin up tomorrow for the first time this season!

These are the ones I used. Died with RIT black, then some tool matting as a stencil and shot some automotive metallic blue...presto, custom CF looking gear that doesn't cost a bunch. Silver will stand out more, but I had a blue theme goin'.

Great thread guys, can I get a number please?!!

I picked up an unstarted kit about a month ago and have been enjoying the build. It's an early kit with die-cut wood and some parts missing (landing gear, decals and some cabane struts).

Thinking about modifying the top wing fitting as I won't be taking it apart for transport (and I've seen the CGU loosing a wing on YouTube!! .

Power will be a period OS MAX 90 FSR with a Pitts muffler.

Cheers

Gary

Cheers, #83 will do me nicely!!

I've wanted one of these for a while, I have a similar model (Chris Foss Wots-Wot) that is my favourite flyer. It's slightly smaller and powered by an ASP 61.

There is a company in England that makes carbon and glass undercarriage legs, wheel pants, cowlings and canopies, I will need the gear legs as they were missing (and not the best design from what I read here). They can supply swept back legs which are more scale but they might make it prone to tipping on its nose.

I assume that the 'Bluehawk' decal sheets are no longer available?

Has anyone covered one of these with Sig Koverall?

So many questions!!!

Thanks, I must have read parts of that thread as I've added most of the mods:

Firewall from 1/4" ply

Reinforced strut ribs and cabane strut mounts (doubled with ply and aluminium 'penny' washers).

Landing gear slotted beam replaced with ply.

Will be using Robart point hinges and have added material to the elevator and rudder.

Not looked at the weight at all but hopefully it's good, might use a Lipo for the Rx battery which would save some.

I'm already fretting about covering it!! Some of the wood is quite soft and really needs sanding sealer and dope but if I do that I can't use film (trapped air bubbles can't bleed through the wood). I've used Koverall before with good results, only problem there is that it will need painting.

Not much left to build really, just the interplane struts and finish the top wing when I've decided how to fix it.

Apologies if it goes quiet as I am away on holiday 22-29th April.

Cheers

Gary

Default RE: Carl Goldberg Ultimate 10-300 Brotherhood.

So i think i have determined what the issue is with my ultimate.  I think i have a bad wing servo.  Let my try to explain.  I flew it on tuesday and the first flight was fine the trim on the ailerons is set to 2 or 3 clicks to the right.  The second flight after take off again with the left roll.  This time i did not panic as much and trimmed it out to and was able to land it with no issues.  The amount of trim required was about a total of 2/3 of the total travel of the trim tab to the right.  So here i am looking at it and i see both aileron halts deflected up when the sticks are neutral (I am looking at this aft looking forward).  So i think my left aileron servo is bad or more specifically the position sensor for the aileron is beginning to fail or has failed not sure which.  Anyway what does everyone think?  I removed the servos during the week and they are hitec ultra high torque servos and the one in the left wing half looks much older then the one in the right side.  Either way i am planning on replacing both servos.  I have replaced the elevator servos and rudder servos when i acquired this plane.  It was used and i bought it off of this older gentleman.  I hope this fixes it.

Sounds familiar to me, I have a hangar 9 texan which had a bad servo, the weirdest thing that often happened was that before each flight both aileron servos worked just fine, when flying I used to have problem trimming the plane and even keeping it level. I replaced the aileron servos and the problem was almost solved, then I wanted to tighten a bolt on the engine mount and I found a second problem, the engine mount came looseI after each flight so I had to reinforce the firewall and the problem was gone. I am sure that, by replacing the aileron servos you will not have any further problem.
