there are a few thing's i did too. one is a one peace dubbler on the fuse. i have not had trubel with the wing tips. good addvice thow. also befor i sheet the center section of the wing, i join the two halves and then sheet the center all at once. seems to make it that much stronger.
i also take out half the dihedral. it still flies great!!
it's amazing no matter what you do to a hog it still flys like one. thats what makes them such a good airplane.

One of the best maneuvers for visual appeal with the Astro Hog is the outside snaproll. It does it with gusto!

C-Crunch and Captian Lou,
I have a Saito .91 in my Astro Hog and it is borderline tail-heavy. I hope C-Crunch doesn't regret shortening the nose. Pull-pull rudder (instead of heavy pushrod) would have probably prevented that situation. I left the dihedral in. My only mods were separate wing servos and another layer of 1/8" ply to the firewall. You really have to be coming in crooked to hit a wingtip when landing with all that dihedral. I really enjoy flying mine. It has about 60 flights on it. Saito .91 is overkill. If doing it again, I would use a Saito 82 or even a 72.

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
I'm curious...with all the cowl area available with the Sukhoi (I'm flying a .40 size Phoenix Sukhoi too) why did you mount the RCV inverted?

millerhill,
Get the 62. The one I've seen runs smoothly and is quite strong for it's size. I have a FA-82a in a 40 size SpitV (Richmodel/aka AK Models) that actually fits inside the cowl. The 62 would fly this plane well, I'm sure.
On the other hand, I have an RCV-58CD mounted inverted in a Sukhoi Su-29 that I've had no luck coaxing to run reliably.

i shortend the nose to carry the 120. i had to put the ele. and rud servos in the tail to get it to balance. the big thing i was conserned about was weight. the hog i flow the hec out of came in at 7 lb. and this is at 7 1/2 lb. thats the best. some times people over build the tail and end up with being tail heavy. i have built 5 for other people and thay all came in just fine with saito 91's on all of them. and yes the 91 is over kill for the hog.
i started building this 120 powered hog for the sig clime and giled and got side tracked with twins. sense then sig dos't have the compititon any more. i just whonted to finsh it to see how it flys. hope to that this weekend!!

ED, I greatly appreciate RCV saying it will turn a 13x6 at 9,000 rpm on 10% fuel with 16% lube rather than saying it has 15hp at 21,000 rpm turning a 7x3 prop.

V6 and c-crunch:
The wing tip issue arose when you make a tail-dragger and it fips on landing. The solution (other then my wing tip mod) is to land well and don't flip it. Regarding the weight of a Hog, I don't concern myself with this. This plane is designed and built to be a bulky plane. The wing is big and symetrical and the fuse is all ply and balsa and it is also bulky. Its wing characteristics give it tremendous lift so weight should not be a significant issue issue. I have built three Hogs, made no modifications other than the wing tips, and balance has never been an issue. In all 3 planes I used a K&B .61 two stroke which gave it good power but never over-powered the plane. I was interested in what V6 said about the .91 Saito. That is the engine originally planned to put into my new Hog but now I may use a FA-100. The reason I plan to use a big engine is that I want to get more out of the plane than I had with a .61 two stroke.

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
I have a question on props for a 125 mounted in a Seagull Ultimate 120. I like to fly more pattern and am not interested very much in 3D. I have tried 3 different props and am not getting the vertical I would like. A 16x6 APC won't do it and a 15x6 Zinger isn't to bad but still is not getting it. Doing the top hat takes quite a bit if vertical power and I'm not getting it. I hate to keep buying props that I am not going to use and if anyone knows a good prop for this engine -plane combination please let me know. Also, why does the 125 blow the prop off when you get just a little lean. I was trying to adjust the engine and got a little lean and the prop went flying across field along with the nut and washer. This is a Zinger wood 15x6 prop and it does not do that with an APC or Master airscrew K-Series. Maybe the Zinger is to lite???? Engine runs good with the Zinger after you get it adjusted, but it sure does backfire a lot if to lean. I was thinking about maybe a 14x8 APC or something like that, but am not sure. I use Cool Power 15% 4S fuel with 18% lube. Thanks.

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
I think APC 15x6 or 14x8 would work best for your plane. On 10% nitro and 20% syntetic/ castor lube the APC 15x6 works very nice for me and pulls very well out off a hover on my UCD 60. The 16x4W is another good prop for this engine but APC 16x6 is too large IMO but maybe ok on higher nitro.

V6............................I have the Saito 91 on a Pica WACO YMF 3 1/6th. I've used an APC 14x6 and it flies pretty good, scale like.

the 91 is alot of power for the hog. but i cant say anything about whanting more. my consern is not to get the hog going to fast. you are right it is big and balkey but a strong plane at that.
well i am off to fly tell you and v6 how it gos with 120 mod.

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
I have just bought my second 4S, a 100 saito, the first was a magnum...sorry. I am putting this on a Hanger 9 hell Cat and need advise on prop. I would like to fly a three blad for scale, but unsure. Could you help?

The two blade props for this engine are the 14-8 or 15-6
It is normal practice on a three blade to drop one dimension in diameter or pitch but the availability is limited

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
Does anyone know if the Saito 170 had different versions? If I buy one that is say 4 years old is it the same engine as if I bought a new one today?

well it flyes, with a 120 i had to fly at 1/4 throttle . it accelarated strat up. i think thats a little over kill. i still think a 91 with a 14X6 is the best combo for a asto hog.

I believe the motor mount dimensions for the Saito .91 and 1.00 are the same so I'll probably try both engines to see which gives the best performance I want. I'll let you know the result but it will a while before it is in the air. I'm awaiting delivery of a Futuba 7C FASST system and delivery is not scheduled for several weeks Stay Tuned
