RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
Hi Ya'll!
Got my first Saito!, It's an 82. got a couple questions I could use some help on! A little history first,I got this engine from a guy in my flying club who ran about 1/2 gal of omega15% tru it on a break-in stand, and had to sell some stuff due to $ problems. The engine is very clean, and you could hardly tell it has been ran. I haven't ran it yet, but these are my concerns.
1: When I turn the engine over by hand I hear a "Clicking" sound, Kinda like when an ABC 2stroke is at TDC you can feel or hear the Con-rod "rock" , But this is not at TDC,This sound is comming from the valves when they open(both Intake and Exhaust). What I did; took off valve covers, checked valve lash (it was.007) adjusted to .004,cleaned & lubed valve stem and spring area with Jb Blaster, reassembled. Result;the noise is still there, but less noticeable. What is this noise? Valve sticking to seat? Is it Ok to run? Will it work it self out with more runtime?
2: Is there anything I can do with the "Crankcase Breather nipple" as per;run this back tru the motor? ( is there a good reason not to reuse this fuel?)
Any help will be appreciated! Thanks,Mike

You are hearing the pushrods taking up the slack (clearance) in the valve train. This is perfectly normal.
The "fuel" you see, or will see, exiting the crankcase breather nipple is mostly oil. Just put a length of fuel tubing on the breather nipple and extend it down to the bottom of the model and let it drip.
Keep a bolt handy when traveling to stuff into this breather tubing so that it doesn't drip oil in the vehicle or house. Just be sure to remove it before running the engine.
I would not try to run it back through the engine. Oil from the crankcase can contain contaminants and is usually the collection point for small bits of metal that are let loose while running the engine.
Congratulations on your purchase. The Saito .82 is a fine engine.

I just saw a used Saito 45 at my LHS reasonably priced. There's a dent in the intake tube, but overall it seems ok.

Has anyone observed problems from this "recycling"? I only have one Surpass ll and not enough experience with it to form an opinion.

I have wondered about the feasibility of installing a crap trap, or some other type of filter, in the line between the crankcase and the intake manifold. There probably isn't a lot of flow going on here and the filters that are available probably aren't fine enough to do any real good.

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
Ive been flying Satios since Ive been flying but I have one that is giving me a fit. Ive flown them upright side ways and inverted and never had any problems with a one of them and never used pumps or on board glows. I just put a Satio 100 in my new 60 size Hanger 9 P-47 inverted and cant get it to idle. You can come down to about 1/4 throttle and she shut down. Ive adjusted the low idle screw and the needle valve for days now and cant get it to idle. Ive changed glow plugs, idle bars, no idle bars, OS-F's, new fuels and etc. with no results. Im running 15% Cool Power also which Ive always ran in all my Satios with excellent results. I can get down to about 2600 RPMs but anything any lower and she'll cut off. I dont wont to run an on board glow but Im at wits end with this one. Im to the point of trying another engine. And yes it will idle fine upright and really its not completely inverted on the P-47, the head sits at about 8:00. Any help is greatly appreciated. Im ready to maiden this airplane but its not ready to cooperate. [&o]

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
I flew my saito 180 today with a pitts style muffler and one of the pipes comming out of the muffler broke off. I think it can be repaired by welding it back on. Is this common on 180's mounted inverted, the muffler is new only about 10 flights on it, the stock muffler kept comming loose so I tried to seal it with rtv silicon and thread lock nothing worked, the 180 runs better with the pitts muffler but now its broken, the mounts are tight and everything looks good,

I know you probably don't want to take the engine back out, but if you do decide to take it out, try this - Duplicate the tank height, relative to the carburetor, and place the engine at the same angle as in the plane. If it runs in a configuation EXACTLY like what is in the plane, then you know your problem lies elsewhere. It takes time, but use a process of elimination.
However, I bet further investigating will lead you directly to the height of the fuel tank.

Oh yeah, if it IS the tank height, and you don't want to change it (or CAN'T), you could consider using a Cline regulator. That will prevent fuel siphoning, and will allow for other options in positioning your fuel tank.

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
Yes this had crossed my mine. The tank configuration on the P-47 is higher than any other plane that I have put a Satio on and fuel does seem to seep out of the muffler with the throttle at full with the engine off at times. I had considered trying to move the tank but there is no way to lower the tank in this plane that I can see with out a lot of structural work. I quess I sorta knew the problem but was hoping for a different answer. LOL I guess Ill have to try the regulator. Any more suggestions are welcome.

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
Have you tried it with 1/2 tank of fuel? this should tell you if it is a tank problem; it is the fuel level, not the tank height that causes the problem. Try a stack, it solved the problem on my 80 along with a carb upgrade. you can attach a piece of brass tubing 1 1/4' long with aluminum epoxy. The stack seems to allow a leaner HS needle and a leaner LS setting. Good luck.

Here are a couple of 90 degree exhaust adapters for Saitos from RCSpecialties, the stock one has a history of breaking in flight. The RCSpecialties one is more compact and has a filet at the end of the threads and should be stronger. It makes mounting a stock muffler or TurboHeader in variety of directions a piece of cake. It's good looking and well made. I show the stock one and the RCSecialties one side by side and then the RCS unit with TurboHeader on a Saito 1.50
Pic. 1 through 3 are the 14mm one for the Saito 1.50 with TurboHeader and pic. 4 is the 12mm one on a Saito .82 with stock muffler.
