Having a connection to Warbirds through the B-17E project, we knew about that plane years ago and were excited when he finally was ready to fly it. Too bad he passed before he could fully enjoy flying it. He did a great job.

They should be labeled H for high and L for low. If not do a google search for a picture of your carb.

In rotary engines the crankshaft is stationary and the cylinders rotate around it. It was an excellent way of cooling the engine but rotaries were limited by the sheer mass rotating at speed. The early French Le Rhone engines as fitted to the first Nieuports and Sopwith Pups, produced about 80 horsepower and were said to be delightful but the most powerful rotaries such as the Bentley BR1 and BR2 produced such strong gyroscopic forces that the Sopwith Camel proved to be a difficult aeroplane for novices to fly and quite a few were killed or injured learning to fly it.

The engine in the model is a replica of the Bentley BR1 or BR2 engine. This engine was never fitted to the Avro 504 but was reserved for fighter aircraft like the Sopwith Camel and the Sopwith Snipe. The bearded gentleman in the video, who actually flew the model, is Ian Redshaw who works as a teacher of craft, design and technology. He is also a fine modeller who built a half-scale Flying Flea seen here flying at an event in Germany. I have seen both the Avro and the Flying Flea flying at shows in England. Ian Redshaw has also built his own workshop out of corrugated iron based on the design of railway sheds which used to be commonplace alongside the tracks of my childhood memory. Next weekend our club celebrates its twentieth birthday and we are going to have a bit of a do. A working party has been organised for later today to prepare the site. Rain is forecast mid week but it's predicted to be fine over the coming weekend. I'll keep you posted.

Have you heard of the Clerget 9B used to power the Sopwith Baby floatplane? It was a 110 HP rotary engine. I purchased a 1/4 scale Sopwith Baby project off a retired gentleman and was able to purchase a 3D prototype of the engine from a gentleman in England. Here are a couple of photos for your amusement.
