I am also interested in alternatives to fiberglass to save weight. What kind of tissue are we talking about and what is the source.
Would Sig Koverall work as an alternative to fiberglass? I plan to seal the balsa with laquer sanding sealer and then use the WB ploy over either the tissue or Koverall. I am building the Skyshark SBD.

Most good hobby shops carry it and it's medium weight silkspan. SIG Koverall is more like the silk we use to use and is heat shrinkable and would be to heavy and you would have to fill the weave so it's smooth.

Thanks Art, I know about silkspan... I just did not relate that to "tissue". I think I will give this a try. I was already going to use the WB poly on the next plane, no need to add anymore weight than necessary.

I see in the pic of the gear cover, that you have the cover very close to the wing. That will bring you grief if you set it up that way. When the landing gear flexes back on landing (even the softest of touch down), the rear point on the fairing will punch through the wing. I have not built a Val, but have done a couple of Gee Bee's with fairings mounted to leg, and I know [>:]. Leave about a 1/8" gap and normal landings won't cause a problem.

Terry I'm still finishing the spats, otherwise I would take another picture. The spats actually are about 3/4" proud of the wing, so flexing on landing shouldnt be an issue.

Heres a picture of the dash

Wow! that's amazing that they provide such nice instruments. I hope they decide to start making giant scale kits. I could definitely go for one of those based on what I've seen here.

I am very interested in this thread as I LOVE Japanese WWII aircraft. Especially interested in the covering with tissue. It may be a good option for the .40 size Hien (Tony) I'm working on. How does it sand in comparison to 'glass? It was asked before but didn't see an answer: What paint will you use? My guess would be latex over the polycrylic? Great thread. Thanks in advance for the advice.

Sanding is so damn easy, just use 600 grade wet and dry (used dry) a few light wipes and its as smooth as a babies bum.
As for paint I will be using Flair Spectrum (http://www.ss16.dial.pipex.com/Furth...0Paint%20Range) Enamel - thinned.

I've really enjoyed reading this thread (although my boss wouldn't if he knew that's what I've been doing). I'm interested in the Skyshark line of kits, especially hearing that they might have a P-40 kit in the not too distant future. Glad to hear their so high on quality. Keep up all the great work.

Sorry for the delay, not a lot to report, been messing with the spats (wheel covers) for what seems like ages. I joined them (ABS), but was just not happy with the result. So I have glassed them over with .6oz cloth, just waiting for it to dry, so I can continue.
