RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
haven't got the engine yet, it's in transit. I can't wait to see it. The plane will be here this morning. Unfortunately I have a midterm exam this afternoon and then I have to work so I probably won't be able to do much with it.

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
I just purchase a Saito .82 black knight to put into an H9 Piper Pawnee. Here are my questions:
1. How do I locate where to cut the relief holes in the cowling for the cylinder heads. I plan on mounting the engine sideways.
2. How can I set this engine up with an exhaust system so that the muffler is under the belly of the plane (for a more realistic look)?
3. Anyone know what I need to set this plane up for towline duty for my gliders?
Any tips and info are appreciated!

See post #10,140 about the exhaust. Measure everything from the firewall out determine where the prop driver goes, mount the engine and then measure for the hole for the head from where the cowl is supposed to be mounted. Eazy Peazy.

One way to locate the cutouts for the engine I use is to install the engine on the mount. Tape a piece of heavy paper or file folder on the fuselage to overlap the engine area I want the cutout to fit. Make the cutout in the paper. Remove the engine and install the cowl leaving the paper in position and mark the cutout location on the cowl. Remove the cowl and make the cutout. Hope I explaned that OK. Works fo me.

What do you think would be the best glow plug to put in a 125? I've heard the O.S. F plugs are really good but I don't know if their thread will fit in the cylinder.

Yeah the f plug will fit. Central has them for about 6buck a pop.
In my inverted 82 I saw no noticable difference from the stock though.
Have not tried in my 180 yet.

use saito, hangar 9 4 stroke, os type f or ys 4 stroke. can't go wrong w/saito or hangar 9 (they are original equipment, might be the same plug). os run good on all, but YS seem to want either ys or os type F, not saito/hangar 9. all the threads are the same on 2 and 4 stroke, they vary by length and projection into the combustion chamber, temperature, ect.

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
Well, I finally got a chance to run my 1.80 with the Cline hooked up. It ran well...seemed to make more smoke than without. I messed with the HS a bit, it doesn't do much but seemed to drop some rpm finally if I went 3/4 turn rich or 3/4 to 1 turn lean of the original settings. My tach was giving funky readings, maybe because of cloud cover and the late hour, so I didn't mess much. I'm thinking the LS might need some leaning with the Cline hooked up. My idle was steady at (I think) about 2100rpm and transition was great. I could literally flick the throttle lever from idle to full and it seemed to only take a couple of revolutions of the crank to spool up, even with the heavy MA classic 18x6. This is going to be one sweet engine

I need a opinion on running coolpower 30% heli fuel in my saito 100? This is what my hobby shop carries. It does say full sythetic on it. What would be the long term effect from not running castor?

I have a new Saito 100 and I have been using Coolpower 30% heli. I also experimented with Collpower 15% Four Stroke. The Heli 30% gives it more power. As for the castor oil, the 30% heli has around 24% oil in it which is more than Saito requires, so adding castor oil may not provide any additional needed lube. Everyone I have spoken to regarding the castor has said the same thing.

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
you'll get different answers on the castor question, but here's my $.02. Castor protects at temperatures where synthetics just vaporize, and also protects against rust because it coats the internals. 24% oil is more than you really need...most on this forum are using closer to 18% I believe. You don't need much castor to get the castor benefits. I'm useing wildcat 15% with 18% total oil. I think the oil is 80% synth,20% castor. I like knowing that if my engine goes lean, the parts will be protected by castor. Some will say you just need to make sure that you run a little rich, but we all know that "stuff happens" Fuel foaming, intake or fuel line leaks, even a peice of crud in the carb may lean your engine. I prefer to be safe. I have no doubt that people run on all synth with no problems. People also ride motorcycles without helmets, which is fine...until something unexpected happens. I'll wear my helmet on my bike, and I'll continue to keep some castor in my fuel.

Tanks for the fast response. I believe I will give it a shot! I have always run coolpoer 15% in my 2 strokes and never had a problem.
As for my $.02, I would like to say that I called Horrizon yestreday And asked about The crankcase breather and castor use in my Saito. They told me that the lenth of tubing run of the breather nipple didn't matter as long as it was not obstructed and was of large diameter. As for fuel they said the 100 will run well on 10-15% nitro with 18-20% oil content being staright synthetic or a blend. Never use straight castor is what I was told. Just wanted to contribute what I believe to be straight from the horses mouth!!!!!!!!!

That is a very good plug, as is the GloDevil 4c Special and my favorite is the Fox Miracle plug. I suspect that if the truth were known the SS is an OS-f clone or is actually an OS-f. In 17 years of running Saitos, Enyas and later YSs and OS I've never seen the magic powers the OS-f is supposed to possess.

I got my Saito yesterday and it is really a beautiful piece of machinery, I can't wait to hear what it sounds like but I'm going to have to wait a while. I have a trainer and my extra to tune up before I can assemble my Cessna.

Just got my first Saito (FA-100) after a having had a couple of Magnums. Looking forward to getting her out on the test stand next weekend and running some fuel through her.
Makes my old Magnum .91 have the face though as it sits in its box next to the shiny new star.

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
Ah, today I had a great day! I have been flying two midsize pattern planes with a OS-91FX with perry pump and a pipe. Actually when I bought this setup I wanted to go for a Saito-100 but for one misterious reason I did not do this. Probably because it was expensive as well. Anyway the other week the header broke so instead of buying a new header I did the only sensible thing! I bought myself a new Saito FA-125 and ripped out the OS with pipe and everything!
After fuelling up I primed the engine and WITH THE FIRST BACKFLIP it ran! I always thought these kind of things are BS, but it actually happened! Anyway, had a blast all afternoon and really wondered why I ever thought this OS was a good idea in the first place. I really love this Saito engine!
So, now the only question remains: Mr. Saito, when can we expect a nice FA-200 for 2m pattern ships? Please!??!?

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
@Capt Lou: I once spent a season with a Saito-72 that did not want to idle at all. I did everything imaginable to fix it. Then I bought new fuel with 18% oil. All problems disappeared. It seemed the old fuel was mixed wrong and had too much oil in it. Since then I always run 18% oil of which 80% is synthetic, 20% castor. Never any problem.
