Gentlemen, I have entered my question twice in this forum and have not seen it posted, I must be doing something wrong. anyway here's my question.
I plan on purchasing a Saito FA62A but I have not seen it mentioned in your forum, is there something wrong with that engine? should I get the 56 instead? Help would be much appreciated,Thank you

Here's my 62 installed and ready to fly. It is the easiest to break in and start of all my Saitos. It is also 100% reliable in flight. In, fact, with the glow igniter in place, I don't dare move the prop unless I'm ready to start it up. It want's to run.

Sometimes a Saito engine will be messy in spite of a velocity stack. It has to do with the mixture setting, the amount of ring blow-by, the way the crankcase vent is plumbed, and the condition of the seal on the front bearing.

I have two ordered and will give it a try.
Stay Tuned??

Hobbsy,
Any updates on breaking in the 1.15?
Also a general question question about 4 strokes to the thread if that's ok
Please pardon the ignorance as I'm new to 4 strokes and have never used an onboard ignition setup for glow
When you use an onboard glow setup for a 4 stroke, does the plug remain under battery assist while it's running?

There are different set-ups with the on-board glow
But most are set up in some way so that the power is only going to the plug at low speeds.
The most sophisticated sense the plugs temperature and apply current is the plug gets cool.
The least complicated homebuilt ones have the throttle rod trip a switch to turn on battery power to the glow plug.

Hey guys,
Probably a stupid question but I was wondering if anyone has or has heard of a R3 170 radial for sale. Was hoping to find one used. Can't really dish out 8 big ones right now and can't bring myself to build a Super Stearman without one in it .
Thanks in advance, Pete

I do not own one but if you check the parts listing on Horizon's site you can see that there are none listed. Looks like it has a bushing on the big end, according to the parts breakdown. Needle bearings would make it a bit exotic and expensive. 600 horsepower big block Chevys do not use needle bearings either.

I just bought a Nitro Planes Sea Fury. http://www.nitroplanes.com/seafury-9...-aircraft.html
These are the specs:
Wing Span : 66 in / 1675
Wing Area : 842 sq in / 54.3 sq dm
Flying Weight : 10-12 lb / 4540-5440g
Fuselage Length : 56.3 in / 1430 mm
Engine Required : 2c 0.60 ; 4c :91
My question is this. I have a Saito 1.25 (24.6 oz.) and a Saito .82 (18.2 oz.). Which one would be the logical choice. The .82 fits completely inside the cowl and the 1.25 would have its valve covers protruding. The 1.25 would be a blast, but I like the idea of the engine fully cowled.
By the way, the aircraft looks better in person than the photos on the site.

Bob,
I agree with w8ye about going for the blast. The Sea Fury has a large wing and blunt nose which means you will need the extra power. The .82 will not be a good choice for that plane.

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
Hi guys! My Saito .82 now has about 1/2 gallon through it and I'm starting to lean the needles a bit. I have the 82 running on a cline regulator. So far, I have tried an APC 14X4 wide. This is turning about 10,000 - 10,020 on my cheap and sometimes unreliable tachometer. I have this engine on an extremeflight extra 300. I must say that the power does not seem to be there with this prop. Also, the extra seems kind of slow in the air.
I also tried a Vess 14X6 wood propeller today. I could only get 8700 rpm out of it (again with my questionable tach). It seemed to pull a bit harder than the APC 14X4 wide and was a little faster, but the wide open throttle produced limited verticle. Do these rpms sound low to you guys?
I am running wildcat 2&4 stroke blend with 18% synthetic oil and 15% nitro. It does get rather hot over here and today was around 100 degrees F.

Nope, just bushings. That's why the oil is mixed at 20:1 (gas/oil) instead of 50:1 like engines that are equipped with needle bearings. Still, even with that much more extra oil, the exhaust is acceptable and the price of fuel is still much lower than glow fuel. Yes, I own one and I'm glad that I do.

I not making fun of you, honest! but your description of that saito 45 brought back an old joke.
This lumber jack was bragging about how long he had this axe, he only replaced the head three times and the handle four times............Sorry!

[:@] Hi everyone. I haven't kept up with this thread lately so maybe someone has answered this before, but here goes. I have a Saito 170 3 banger on a KMP (yuck) Beaver. It does just fine with the onboard glow turned on. When I turn it off after a short time I lose power. Turning the glow back on doesn't help so I just have to land the plane. My guess is that one cylinder is dropping out and the plug is wet and won't fire up again. Has anyone else had this problem and if they did was there a fix? I guess I could load the plane with batteries and fly with the glow on 100% of the time, but that doesn't seem like a good fix.
Thanks,

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
I have several Saitos (125, 150, 220) and I have a difficult time securing the mufflers. Does anyone have a suggestion as to how to keep these on without continually loosening up after a few flights?
My Feedback: (18)
RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
I don't have an answer for that since I have not had any problems with my mufflers but I have a question concerning the exhaust. I've gone through five Hobbico exhaust diverters in the past three weeks. All have split open and they were mounted on Saito 1.20's on two different aircraft. Has anyone had the same problem with them? Is there an alternative piece that I can use. I used to use the large thick-walled Aerotrend tubing but from what I can see, it is no longer available.

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
I have the answer to both of your questions.
I have a Saito 150 and 180 that were both mounted on a DP Ultimate. Both mufflers would come loose at the cylinder head after 4 or 5 flights. I tried tigntening after they were hot and used red lock-tite with no luck.
So I tried the Turbo-muffler: http://www.rcuniverse.com/market/ite...itemId=411691# That's sold here on RCU. Installed it on the 180 on the Ultimate and after an hour and a half it's still solid as a rock. Looks good and gave me about 200 additional rpm's. Sounds like a gass engine. I also have one for my 150 thats going in a Venus II.
On both engines it installed on the Cylinder head without the 90* adapter. You need to remove the intake manifold to screw it on. It fits nicely and on the Venus I will not need to cut the cowl for the muffler.
As far as the deflector. The only one that seems to work on the big Saito's is the Hobbico mounted backwards. The heat on the 4 strocks will cook the inside of the deflector and if you mount it as suggested the silicone is thinner in the grooves and it will break after about two hours of use.
This deflector is at least half again as thick as the smaller ones so after it broke off twice I just turned it arround and the tie-wrap held it in place. It still cooked the inside but it stayed on.

With the new muffler I don't need the deflector. It seems to blow the exhaust further from the plane and it just had some on one wheel-pant. Very little on the bottom of the plane.
Hope that helps

Bob,
The thick walled header coupling is still available from Aerotrend. I prefer the cream colored coupling myself.
