Saito FA-100 Glow, I cant figure out what i'm doing wrong here.......I had this enging running twice for about 30 seconds each. Ever since that point I cant get it started. I've changed the glow plug, made sure none of my fuel lines were clogged, and the carb line was also connected to the clunker line in the tank, I thought maybe the rubber plug at the end of the tank where the fuel lines go in was loose, but I took it apart and tightened it up and the suction/pressure is good.......I guess i'm looking for ideas or suggestions, When I turn the prop I cant even see any fuel being sucked into the line to the carb. Thanks for the help in advance!

are you sure the throttle is set to idle and not wide open when you're trying to start it?
Cause it won't suck no fuel when you turn the prop just as you describe if it is wide open........

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
My Saito 100FA recently managed to grind up the ball cage from the rear bearing. About 20 gal through this engine.
I saw some rust pits in pieces of the ball cage. I run only 20% nitro 20% oil in this engine.
I ordered a set of ceramic bearings from RC Bearings (Paul McIntosh). I certainly didn't need these for speed, but the components are less likely to rust. I installed the bearings, and after 3 flights there was a noticeable amount of play in the crankshaft. The bearings are shot. I have about 12 flights on these bearings.
I couldn't contact Paul about this, so ordered another set from Boca. The rear bearing in this set has seals on both sides of the rear bearing. The original bearing has no shields.
Should I remove these? ? ?
The set I ordered from Boca are also high speed with a composite/plastic ball retainers. Here again one less thing to rust.
Maybe I am going way overkill for a 10,000rpm engine. What do you think, and what bearings are you using for replacements?

Take a look at this http://www.bj-model-engines.com/Demo..._11-11-05.html
You may want to try it.
I recently sent for some of this but haven't used it yet. I've been told it works good.

Dunno about cleaning and intact engine but a guy at our club says a Dishwasher tablet (with powerball) in boiling water for twenty minutes does the trick.

Greg, I always remove the rear, seal/shield, guys think I'm crazy for being a BOCA customer but I have never had anything but great service from and never a failure. So far I've never replaced bearings in an engine I bought new, only in used ones, I have the BOCA ceramics in a used SuperTigre .90, Webra .91, Fox .50 and and .74 which are all converted to Diesel.

Try the Saito or Horrizon Hobby web sites. I remember seeing online maunals somewere in either one.
You just have to search around for it. You also can call Horrizon they sell them for a few bucks or you can ask them were to find it online.

If anyone is interested here is the path to find online Saito manuals.
Go to Horizon Hobby web site http://www.horizonhobby.com/
In the Search box type in manual.
In the column to the left select on Manuals & Part Explosions.
Then to the right of the page there is a box…Select Brand
Scroll through and select Saito engines
Then click Go
Find your engine and click View
Good Luck,
Shubova

CLUB SAITO, PLEASE HELP! MY BELOVED 65 SOUNDS SICK! IT HAS LOST THAT,"POTATO,POTATO" SOUND! NOW MAKES NOISE OF BAD VW, THAT NEEDS OIL!
I DID A REBUILD ON IT, FOUND THE CAM DAMAGED, THE BEARINGS GONE AND LIFTERS SPREAD. THE NEW CAM I PUT IN, HAD AN "A" AFTER THE PART NUMBER. COULD THIS BE THE CAUSE OF ALL MY GEAR NOISE? OR IS THE CRANK COOKED? THE GEAR PLAY CAN BE FELT ON THE FRONT. MY 82 HAS NO GEAR PLAY.

Jim, - RC Specilities. I see you,re on line. A few posts back I told you I would get back to you with some numbers after I got a reliable (hopefully) tach and was able to run my new 180 some more. So here they are. I have about 3/4 of a gallon of fuel through it now and I think it is pretty well dialed in for this early in the game. This is my first Saito by the way and my first 4 stroker so any feed back is humbly accepted. Using your muffler and running on 10% fuel with a 16X8 Master Aircrew prop and leaned to max RPM it is turning 9780 RPM on the top end. I then enrichened it back to 9400 and was able to lean the LSN to what I considered a reliable idle at about 1800 RPM. With instant throttle responce by the way. I think it would have ran all day at that idle but it didn't sound like it really liked it too well so I brought it back to the leanest setting that would maintain 2000. This engine sounds GREAT and I am really pleased with it. It just runs better with every tank of fuel - as others have testified. How do these numbers sound to you? Ron

DId you install the gasket under the cam cover, it sets the gear lash, how could the lifters be spread, if you mean they were mushroomed then somebody ran it for along time with too much valve lash.

RPMck,
Those numbers sound pretty good. Things will continue to improve as it breaks in more. That is a pretty good idle speed. I am glad you like the muffler's tone. Enjoy!
Gettin' ready for a big blow here in southern LA.

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
I currently own 2 Saito engines FA-50 and FA-80, both have some considerable time on them. They both produce good power to weight and hand start easily. I do have a problem that one of the experts might be able to help me with. Both of my engines have the machined aluminum mufflers with brass preasure tap. The latest incarnation of this muffler has the tap located at the end of the muffler nearest the exhust outlet. I only got three flights on my newest muffler (FA-80) and the tap stripped out. I was wondering if anyone knows what the thread size is so that I could drill and tap a new hole for the preasure tap? Of course this will require I assume, that I purchase a metric size tap for the job.
