RE: Airworld Hawk Building thread
Funny you should mention that now as I did a trial fit yesterday, it looks really terrific. What I particularly like about this aspect as the basic work is all done and one can enjoy adding all the small details to the ejection seats for example to really bring the cockpit to life. I did several photos of the seat OUT of the cockpit at Scampton so you can see all the details of it on the photo CD.
I compare this with the hours and hours of tedious work on my F4 and F15 cockpits, worth it in the end but what a lot of work.
Its raining in Sydney today (and aren't we grateful after the very serious fires just one mile away on new years day. !) so should be able to complete the wings.
Anyone know what the drilled and tapped hole is for on the top of the main fuel tank, a steady perhaps ?
Photos will follow.
Regards,
David gladwin.

RE: Airworld Hawk Building thread
Hi David,
If I understand you correctly, on my tank there is a brass nipple in that hole which I am intending to use for vent.
Geoff.
P.S. Making progress on mine.

Thanks Geoff, seems logical but its far too small on mine to use as a vent hole, I't enlarge it and use as such.
More wing work yesterday. The flap hinge fairings are done and it was boring and tedious because the vac formed fairings are very flexible and its difficult to trim the flange accurately. In addition the flange of the fairings is flat and the wing surface is cambered. On my next Hawk I wll fit a balsa base in each fairing BEFORE they are cut from the sheet. This will stiffen them and all the flange will be removed and the sides of the fairings trimmed to get a perfect fit on the wing. New flanges will then be cut from thin glass board , glued to the wing and the fairings glued on top of the flanges. That is what I am now doing on the aileron jack fairing.
The kit wing fences need drastic trimming, 42 mm is removed from the top section and 51mm from the bottom. The fences then fit perfectly acccording to the BAe wing GA drawing and confirmed by photos. The photos(sorry uploaded twice) show the correct position, darker line.
The aileron servo needs to be moved inboard to allow correct line up with aileron horns in the correct scale position with the jack fairing correctly placed. A Dremel router bit did the job in seconds.
Getting there !

Looks like you are making great progress there David. Looking good.
We just decided to offer a conversion kit for our Hawk customers so that the plane can be turned into a T-45 Goshawk for those who prefer the US version. The conversion kit should be available right after Top Gun.

Hi John,
Sounds intersting.
Would that be an Airworld option or something you guys are arranging yourself? What would be included in the conversion kit?
Rgds,
Mark

RE: Airworld Hawk Building thread
It will be an Airworld USA option. Details are not final yet, but basically it will be an add-on the the existing kit. The kit will be delivered as a Hawk, but the upgrade kit will include new struts, moulded speed brakes, gear doors, functional tail hook, SMURF's and the various little scale details
We are currently doing the conversion, and as soon as it is done we can look into pricing and delivery times.
How is your Hawk progressing?

RE: Airworld Hawk Building thread
Hi John,
Dumb question maybe, but the legs on the T-45 look longer than on the regular hawk - if so, they wouldn't fit in the wheel wells??
My Hawk is progressing tooooo slowly. Been working 6 or 7 days a week and have been packing for a house move so the Hawk was put away out of harm's way, then we got burgled....so I've not spent much time on it!
Once we're in the new place I plan on cracking on with her! Besides, I've got people waiting for my 'manual'

RE: Airworld Hawk Building thread
I am sure the T45 will sell very well indeed in the US but if you wish to retain the superb scale fidelity of the T1 version there are lot of changes that aren't immediately obvious, but are quite fundamental. On the Goshawk the following are the main changes, in addition to the ones you mentioned.
The landing gear mounts are much further outboard to accomodate the longer stroke legs. (which will improve ground handling)
The wing LE is straight, all the way to the fuselage, and the tips have a square cut profile and incorporate LE slats.
The fin is taller and more "square".
The stab is greater span and has square cut tips.
All of these changes are discussed in detail in World Air Power Journal Vol 22.
My Hawk is nearly done and incorporates a number of small mods. and improvements to make it even more scale, number 2 arrives next month and that will be even further enhanced. This is indeed a superb model.
It is interesting to compare the Hawk with an Ultra Bandit. Both are about the same size, the Hawk is less expensive but requires more work to finish but the Hawk is a super scale model , perfectly suited to grass field operations, comes with a completed cockpit and as we saw in Hungary flies absolutely superbly, both fast and slow and has truly amazing scale "presence".
Good luck with the T45, the orange and white USN colours should look fantastic.

David Gladwin.

Perhaps this shot may be of help to those Hawk builders pondering how to hold the canopy in accurate position whilst the Hysol sets !

RE: Airworld Hawk Building thread
Took me a while to work it out but now that the glue has dried and the "scaffolding" removed the fit is near perfect. The center of the left side is just a tad inboard of the fuselage side, easily correctable by "padding" the location tongues.
A couple of points:
Do handle the canopy with great care it scratches easily.
Do notice the balsa spacer placed between the canopy ledges. This prevents the fusleage sides from bowing in when the long bits of balsa are used to hold the sides of the canopy against the frame.
Ready for some primer now ! Thats it for today, off to the beach ! (Sorry Brits !!!)

David Gladwin.

David,
Can I ask how you are activating the outer main gear doors? I, and a few friends, have spent ages trying to work out a good simple way of doing it but another opinion is always worthwhile.
Thanks.
Geoff.

RE: Airworld Hawk Building thread
Hi Geoff and Francois,
The gear doors are the last thing to do, everything else is finished ready for priming and gearing up. Hope you would come up on the door hingeing solution, but I'll give it some thought !
Francois, great to hear from you and yes the Mig has flown very succesfully. its in the hangar for some minor mods. (stronger nose strut spring, some fuel line rerouteing and a new more scale pitot boom and vortex generator. Tailor Made Decals have done the markings for it and the Hawk. The failure of the right leg to extend was due to the door becoming trapped inside the fuselage skin due to fuselage flexing. Damage minimal, scratched stab and wingtip ! I have EVERY confidence in your hydraulic system.
You will love the Hawk even though the instructions are still in the works. I obtained the book direct from Dale Watson, (www.dalewatson.com) service is very quick and the book contains a good three view and some most useful scrap drawings. I have failed to get a really good 3 view, BAe were not too helpful. However I hosted Duncan Simpson (ex BAe chief test pilot , first flight on Hawk etc) in Sydney a year or so ago and he gave me his address. Really nice man and we have a number of mutual friends in aviation so I will write and ask if he can help us.
Please pm me your address and I will send you a little present which will help enormously in your Hawk build.
By the way guys who is doing the Red arrows scheme ? Tailor made decals are doing decals for me as XX 237 which is the leader, S/L Dicky Patounas's aircraft.
Keep me posted on your progress and give my very best regards to all the guys in SA, we had really great time at your JWM.
Regards, David.

4 would be superb, however, the difficultys of "is that mine or his" prevalent in my mind!!! Each could have a different colour smoke, would really be something!!
However, I don't wish to hijack this incredibly good thread, but kind of looking past the end point!
