RE: Jet Flying @ Thunderbird Field - Ft. Worth, TX
We fly off of 400' so we're used to that. I know they are supposed to be building you a new field on the lake, any new news on that, gonna be a longer runway.
We had a jet rally this last year and had a very poor showing. We have a very nice field but the runway is 400', I think that scared off some people. There has been a large variety of planes flown in and out of our field including some that are supposed to be runway hogs, not a problem.

T-Bird great for sport jets - not many people willing to take a gamble with larger scale jets. Runoff not great and most off-roading would result in undercarriage woes. The new field is NOT LONGER. (well, maybe 20') 480x40 The new field is identical to the old one in construction although in a different position in relation to the water. (lake just off the approach end) The biggest deterrent however, will be the additional driving distance and restricted overfly areas. It's a shame really - one of the best backdrops you could have for flying models really... sad to see the old field go. On another note, this is the exact reason for forming the club at TMS.

I just flew at the new field for the first time. Beautiful runway and super nice facilitites. I landed a bit hot, so I ended up using most of the 450ft. I'm sure I should be able to cut that by half next time.

Smitty and myself did a small jet demo a couple of weekends ago for the 50th Anniversary. Weather was crap but we managed.
Much to my surprise, there were two retired Lockheed Vice Presidents of Aeronautics (Ralph Heath and Zim Zimmerman), and a representative for a local Congresswoman (Kay Granger). So yes, I felt a little heat over flying a demo for the guys who make the F-16. After the demo they were really good sports and I showed them the model and were really stoked with the F-16. Too bad I left my resume at home, damn it!!
Some pics and vid of the demo flight.

We do indeed. Water is pretty darn close to North end of the field these days. A normal base leg to final is over water, or it was as of a week or so ago last time I was out there. I am told they are letting out a tremendous amount of water daily. Maybe some day shortly before or after Thanksgiving for an informal jet together ?

Thanks Paul. I’ve always been impressed with your Hunter flights since the first time I met you at Mr Pleasant a couple of years ago. Now, a Buccaneer! I’m sure that’ll be flown mostly at Waco though. I’m going to be semi retired starting in December and fully by the end of next year so should have a lot more time to fly. It’s a long drive for Nick to come down from Keller with his F-16 but with a gang flying there, it might lure him down.

Oooh! I want to be there so badddddd
It is rear to see two jets flying the same day at my flying field, only a hand full of us, less than that actually.
I'm planing a 3 day trip to DFW at the end of the month, I intent to swing by the Tbird and the North D field and Peticolas of course
Thank you for reviving this thread.
