Guys what do you make of this re valve clearances? just pulled the exhaust rocker cover off to get clearence for the pressure nipple on the 82 flex pipe to rotate freely.Checked the valave gap and it's .003...aloowing for all the variables that make this an interesting trip how do saito set them at the factory??

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
I have some strange things going on with my Saito 180 on a Dave Patrick Ultimate??
1. I have had a problem with the stock muffler vibrating loose at the cylinder head. The lock nut keeps loosening?? Even with plumbers tape and red lock-tight?
2. So I used a Turbo-muffler with plumbers tape and it worked for 32 flights and then it started to loosen.
3 So I tried the Saito Flex-Muffler with nipple. (10 1/4" long) I tried it with the Saito 90* angle, made for this, but it has no way to bottom out so it just flops in the sleeve. So I used the 90* adaptor from Turbo-muffler and it worked fine as far as securing the muffler.
But Here is the problem I LOST 1,000+ RPMS WITH THAT 10" PIPE ON THE ENGINE?? WHAT GIVES??? THE BEST I CAN GET IS 7100 RPM'S
The engine is mounted at 90* with a carbonfiber composite mount. This problem has been intermittent over the 230 flights. I did have the cylinder head replaced after the stock muffler unit stripped the threads. I did this before installing the light 90* Turbo-muffler. http://www.rcuniverse.com/market/item.cfm?itemId=439720
Any suggestions. Thanks!

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
Thanks blw! And thanks to Sigman for starting this forum, which has lots of information. Ever since I started flying fixed wing 6 months back I dreamed of having a saito engine. I envied the sound everytime I hear it from other flyers plane and now I've got my first one and still just about a quart on it. I was almost pulling hair when I first run the engine and this forum gave me lots of reason to do it correctly and it indeed paid well.
I guess my first question would be idling, using my tach it idles at 1890rpm. I've read idling in 2000-2500 somewhere and just wondering is it bad for the engine to idle at a low rate? It is kinda cool except for the vibration it creates

I would have thought a 14-6 by looking at all the bench tests. That's what I run on my 82 and different plane but our styles may be different?

My 82 likes a 12x10 APC on the Midwest 40 Zero. Fast, good verticle. The 12x9 didn't load it down enough after break-in. 10% fuel used.

I ran the 180 today with a Turbo-muffler and it was turning at 8400 Rpm vs. the 7100 rpm with the flex pipe??. So I called Saito and they said that's normal. If so why are they selling that worthless flex muffler????[:@] Plus the 90* elbow is worthless with this muffler as well???
Horizon's website is extremely lacking in product discriptions. Ah!!! what product descriptions[:'(]

Just so you don't feel lonely, I put flex pipes on an OS 120, a Saito 100 and on a Saito 82, and they hurt top end performance on those three engines too!
I'll probably get rid of the flex pipes, and perhaps replace them with Turbo Headers. Well, not the OS.....
Wanna BUY some used flex pipes?

Here's how to do the bearings in a OS. The Saito is simpler. It is in French but I partially translated it.

I'm running the stock muffler and manifold/pipe on my 1.00 using an RC Specialties 90 degree. So far it's holding up pretty well.
The Saito 90 degree snapped after 2 flights.
The RC Specialties has a slight radius at the end of the threads that seems to add strength to the elbow. The Saito doesn't.
Even though theRC Specialties is holding up so far I will be adding a bracket to support the weight of the muffler
that will attach to the engine itself

Here's how to do bearings on a Thunder Tiger Pro 46. There's no valve mechanism because it is a two stroke. It is voiced in Australian by Xjet but sounds like good English to me http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TuzEco3EDUM

Do you mean Performance specialties??? http://www.pspec.com/details.asp?ProdID=51&category=4

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
I typed in RCspecialities.com and got a plumbing site??? What is their address??
Never mind I have two of their muffliers and they both leak at the seam in the middle of the muffler?
And they also came loose on the Saito 150 and 180.
The Performance specialities muffler looks good because it's one piece. There is a pilot at our field that has a couple of their mufflers and has not had a problem??
