RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
Hi I am just breaking in a new Saito 91s (as per the manual) and had a few questions (looked through the thread, man its long)
-Many people rec a 15% nitro with a mixture of oil/castor (20%), do you want something with castor & synthetic and stay away from it if it doesnt have it, the manual doesnt reall state castor but I see people are actually adding more (castor). Also after a gallon can I up the nitro are people running 20% or 30%.
-Should you break it in with a smaller prop and then eventually work my way up to an acceptable size.
-Last what engine mount are people using (I see saito sells a mount but pricey is it worth it) and what size of fuel tank would you want obiously the tank is a reflection of the aircraft size but what run time would you expect on a 10oz.
The hobby store is useless here. Any other tips outside the break in on the manuel would be great, never had a four stroke before. Thanks

Use a fuel with the synthetic/castor blend. 30% nitro heli fuel with 22% synthetic is OK
I have found this mount to be very satisfactory

The 10 oz should give you 10 min with 10% nitro fuel
I use a 12 oz
A 14-6 is the standard prop but for 3D and 30% nitro you might try more diameter and less pitch

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
Hi guys
I have a new FA-115, it runs great. My problem is that it is real messy. A lot of unburnt fuel on airplane. Engine is mounted upright and the carb opening is facing down. I suspect this is the problem. I can't rotate the carb because of the throttle hook up. Any ideas?

Try using a carburetor velocity stack. You can get it at Horizon. I have put them on my .91 and 1.00 and they have substantially reduced the waste of fuel and improved efficiency. I don't understand why Saito doesn't put them on its engines as a matter of course

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
I just inherited a 80's era Saito 40. The manual says it's a FA40-2. My Dad used to fly scratch built 40 sized planes with it. He stopped flying it when the rear bearing rusted and it's been sitting for about the last 15 years, probably less than a gallon of fuel through it since my Dad didn't fly glow much (he was transitioning to e-power at the time). Anyway, I tore it down and replaced the bearings and cleaned it up. Compression is great, but I'm wondering what type of plane it will fly. Would a 6 foot Telemaster be too much for it, if for nothing else to test the engine? ANyone know what prop would work? The manual lists 11x6 and 11x7, which seems a bit much, but maybe it can pull it. My Dad thought he ran a 10x7 but wasn't sure. It's a cool little engine. Came with a choke, which was never used and I probably won't use it as well. The conrod is bushed at both ends, something my Saito 100 does not have. Thought that was interesting. Maybe that was a cost reducing issue or maybe the metallurgy is just much better now that bushings aren't needed.

The 10-7 or 11-6 will be fine
The engine will fly the 40 size Telemaster but you will have to dive the plane to get it to loop

Only the Golden Knight 91 came with a stack and chokes have not come on Saitos since back in the mid 90's

That's the current photo on Horizon. The chokes no longer come on it? How do they take up the gap, a longer white nylon 0-"ring"?

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
They have a black intake manifold Oring in the gap
That picture is old. It shows a choke, metal throttle arm, old style carb with the blank air bleed tabs, and short crankshaft with no prop lock nut

I had thought the previous owner had lost the locking nut. Ah, I see.
So..if I want to use the velocity stack without the choke, I'd need one of those new 0-rings. How would one obtain it? Or is it the same as the intake manifold 0-ring?

Old style carb with the blank air-bleed tabs? Apparently this is the same model as I have, with the metal throttle arm, choke, etc.
Are the new carbs any better than the old-style?

They are pretty much the same on the inside. The parts will interchange
This is the way the new carb looks

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
I've been breaking in a Saito 82 and have a question about the RPMs. When I lean out the HS needle, it'll max at 9900 before it drops off. I can back it off to 9400/9500 and have plenty of smoke. In my mind, this still seems high, but well within the spec RPM range.
I guess that I'm looking for advise or confirmation on this. I don't want to 'hand grenade' my little motor. It's been my understanding that these motors are happier at 8700/8900 RPMs.
The motor has about an hour of run time on it with a MAS 14x6 prop and Wildcat 20/20 fuel. I've also leaned out the LS needle with the motor still on the rich side.
Any advise will be welcomed. Cheers! BH

I wonder about the performance impact of the velocity stack on the .91
I wonder if our buddy Hobbsy would do a comparison? We love Hobbsy.
