RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
Tom,
Sorry you still have this problem. You mentioned before you had some exhaust thread damage and had it repaired. If there is damage or looseness in the threads it will be hard to keep any muffler tight. First check the engine for tany source of the excess vibration from the prop, spinner, or tuning problems. You may want to try a two piece aluminum mount. That is what I used on my Ultimate. I don't think the flex mount you mentioned will fix your problem. If both the 150 and 180 have the same problem on this plane, you may want to re-inforce the engine bulkhead since you have had a fuel soak problem. That weakens the bulkhead considerably. Good luck.
Jim

Thanks again for your efforts. The problem was not your mufflers. How is the modification working??
I am going to reinforce the firewall and it makes sense that the soft mount will vibrate more?

Yes every tip for our engines is gold worth;
Saito engines are the coolest runing engines with little termic probls because of the one-piece zylinder Head;
Only Saito is able to build one-piece zylinder including head;
all others Magnum, Os, Sy ... do have an extra head screwed down on the cylinder, not saito, its one peace;
i'm Saito-Fan, Fa 100, Fa 180, Fa 220, 325/5, 450 r3d;

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
I guess its time to join up! Got some questions and some comments that can best be answered in this 'club'.
I currently have 2 Saitos 56's, one being in a 40 Rascal and one looking for a home. also have Saito 82 in a Delta Vortex.
My interest now is to find a twin Saito 90 or 100. Thoughts are to install it in a Flying King. Currently have OS 91 four stroke in the Flying King and I find that power to be about right.
I would like to find a site that lists all the Saito models and specs. Also, I might learn about the Saito twins models that were more prefered. Twin carb, twin plugs and whether to use a pump are a couple of things that come to mind when looking for my first twin.
I find the extra cost of buying a Saito to be more than worth it over some of the other choices..
I have an old Ace 60 which has very sturdy fuselage that could also be a candidate for a twin. Any recommendations?

It only takes a fourstroke about 30 seconds to reach operating temperature, there is not a lot of mass there to warm up and they do run pretty warm to the touch. As Jim suggested, keep us posted, the more knowered we are the better. How do you like my new word?

What temperature should these engines run at?
45c degrees to me is not hot at all - I shower with the water at 50c.
Should one be able to touch the engine when it is at peak temperature?
I cannot leave my hand on my 82 immedialtey after a flight now. Too hot?
Thanks

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
First thanks for all the input. I think I have the engine fixed. I found that after ruuning the engine the exhast valve would become loose. I would re-adjust and run again and it would come loose again. Once to the point the exhaust valve almost wouldn't open. It would even come loose if I turned the engine over by hand a few time (5 or 6). I finally replaced the rocker arm screw and nut and ran the engine and so far so good. The piece I replaced looks fine but it sure won't stay tight. I will try to get out this weekend and give a good test. Hobbsy don't know if knowered is a word but I like the way you think, I also like your Gartlits quote.
Thanks again

BeagleMan, do like this, I made the right cowl cheek removeable. Since that photo was taken the UglyPipes have been replaced with two TurboHeaders.

Thanks for the input. The Flying King would lend itself to this mod really well. I am kind of interested in short stacks with pump for pressure. We have no problems with noise at our flying site (very remote) and that is a big bonus!

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
Does anybody use, or should one use, wooden props on their Saito's?? just wondering.....
I was told to use the heavier type props, to give the flywheel effect and lower smoother idle. I have a few 18x6 and 16x10 topflite woodies laying around. Thinking of using them at a rougher flying field then if I nosed over I would be less likely to damage my beloved 180 - just break the prop instead.
Cheers in advance.

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
Ok, this has probably been asked before, but I'm a Saito new-guy, so please bear with me.
The Saito manual says CoolPower fuel up to 20% nitro is ok. The manual also says to use an after-run oil. But, the side of the CoolPower jug says DO NOT use an after-run oil, that the fuel contains anti-rust and protective additives. What gives here? I've also heard (and this is NOT in the manual) that 30% nitro Heli fuel is ok to burn. Is this true?
The manual also says to store your airlplane on its nose to keep oil in the bearings. Is this necessary?
Thanks,
Sluggo

I believe I'd throw that manual away.
from my experience regular Cool Power is rust
30% heli Cool Power has 22% synthetic oil and works out pretty well

Saito
Small-Medium Single Cylinder 4-Stroke Engine
INSTRUCTION MANUAL
Version 2006
Page 3
1. Fuel. For maximum protection and
loogevity of Saito engines, Saito
recommends a fuel containing 20% oil
and 10-15% nitro methane. If this blend is
not readily available, the next best
selection is a high quality 2-cycle glow
fuel, such as Hangar 9 Aero-Blend,
Omega, Cool Power, K&B, Power
Master, etc. Use of fuels composed
entirely of castor oil is not recommended.
A mix of synthetic-castor oil is acceptable
and can be found in the various fuels
described above.
This is the excerpt from the manual that is the reason I asked. Ok, so forget CoolPower. Which of the other fuels are good? The problem is my LHS seems to have cornered the market on CoolPower. Do you still recommend after-run, even if the jug says not to use it?

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
An older ad for Cool Power listed these ingredients:
high thermal stability synthetic oil
clean castor
rust preventers (no afterrun needed)
film strength additives
extreme pressure additive
anti foaming
wetting and plating additive
lubricity (slickner) additive
detergents
blended for excellent idle, acceleration, and top end
Omega is listed as a castor-synthetic fuel for hotter conditions like cars and cowled installations.

Although it isn't listed there, I use more Wildcat fuel than all others combined, and I know that MANY people are very happy with WC. I have eight Saitos that digest WC on a regular basis, as well as my OS engines, both 2C and 4C.
http://www.wildcatfuels.com/products.htm
I primarily use WC Premium Xtra in either the 10% or 15% nitro versions. I have used the Premium, but I like the extra oil (and therefore extra engine protection) of the Premium Xtra.
Edited to add... I ALWAYS use after run oil to flush the crud out. I use 50/50 ATF and Air Tool Oil.

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
G'day over in the west.
Most time I have had an engine quit once the plug is removed, the problem has turned out to be the fuel. When this happens, I usually try to "borrow" some fuel to use as a test. I did have one OS 70 Supass which was side mounted in a Cub which simply would not run without the plug connected so I used a large Nicad cell and just left it turned on for the whole flight. It was far too powerful and ended up being replaced by an OS 52 and more recently an ASP 61. Both of them were fine in the Cub. Is your engine inverted or on its side? My 82 is in a Sig Astro-Hog and I have not had any problems with it even though it is still running quite rich (it has only about 4 flights plus some running-in under its belt). I am using a commercial fuel with 10% nitro, 5% castor, 15% synthetic and the rest CH3OH.
Ready for the next Text vs South Africa which I believe is being played at the WACA?
