RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
Well, somehow in the span of 6 months, I went from zero Saito's, to 4.
1 x56, 3 x 91.
Guess I should ask for a number now, 'cause I'm never going back to anything else.
Not saying I'd tatoo Saito on my arm, that might be excessive ( and make "mom" look goofy) but happy is too mild a word.
The 56 just coming around the 5 hr mark now, and what a little monster she is. Running a apc 11x8 on a 7lb, 1oz,
H9 mustang- the 58" arf version of the pts mk1 system, from a couple years ago. Modded with retracts now.
Back then it was only $130.00. Great fun to fly, scale like or toss it around.
She's doing about 70-75 mph level & great verticle. Averaging 20 min flights on 11oz. too boot.
One question:
The 56 is mounted upright, canted to side slightly.
Is it because the vent is at the bottom, rather than the rear plate like the 91's, that it spews a heck of a mess, much more than 91's it seems like.

Yes Saito has something very special! Only two so far but two cycles are good on some planes but my war-birds are getting nothing but Saito's! Bob
Have a great day! I know i'm going too!

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
I have a problem with a Hangar 9 Twist 150 with a Saito 150 on it. Set plane up, broke the motor in on bench and combined the two and can't get the motor to draw fuel to save my life.
It looks like the tank is low in this plane and no way to raise it. The center line of the carb is about 1/2-3/4" lower than the intake line out of the tank. Any experience out there with this? The 150 and 180 are recommended motors for this plane. The Twist 150 is not produced any more, maybe this is why.
Thanks

I have most of the popular Saitos listed as well as very reasonable shipping to Oz.

Saito engine bearing part numbers and manufacturer equivalents
Hello fellow Saito nuts! It's been awhile.
I have a question please.......
I am tgrying to source some ceramic bearings here in Oz (harder than you think) for my crashed 82a. The bearing people tell me that they don't normally hold stocks as there is not a lot of demand. Now, I have a large stable of Saito children that I love dearly and will eventually have to perform the same surgery on to prolong their little lives. This got me to thinking and wondering if any of my Saito Club friends have put together a cross reference chart of Saito Part Number - Manufacturer Steel Part Number - Manufacturer Ceramic Bearing Part Number equivalents for each of the Saito models out there? You know, like that wonderful little Saito manual does for sapre engine parts - "Small-Medium Single Cylinder 4-Stroke Engine Instruction Manual Version 2005" that has all part numbers for all engine models listed.
Anyone help me?

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
Hello Hobbsy,
After reading your review and tips, this procedure below is what I'll use to break in my Saito 115.
Please see that everything is correct ok !!!
************************************************** ***********************************
Saito 115 Break in procedure:
10 minutes @ 4,000 rpm at 1/4 to 1/3 throttle. (With HS needle 5 turns open)
After this first 10 minutes, close 2 turn the HS needle.
10 minutes @ 5,000 rpm
10 minutes @ 6,000 rpm
Shut down and refilled tank, peak HS needle (and leave it for now) and procede to set the LS needle
and idle, set the LS needle in 1/8th turn increments checking the transition.
When you reach best idle and transition richen the HS needle down about 300 rpm.
5 minutes @ 6,500 rpm
10 minutes @ 7,000 rpm with a couple of short runs to full throttle.
Go to fly !!!
************************************************** **************************************
Thanks,
Thiago

Are you priming it correctly, there's only two things that stopped a new engine i've just spent money on starting..lack of knowledge and excitement.

There's been a lengthly thread over in the gas engines forum with the name Saito FG-20 in the title.
The engine due to carburetter sensitivity problems has not been very successful for anything other than running on the bench.

I'd put 4 ounces of Castor in it a fly it. It is a whole can of worms, but that is what I'd do.
John
PS I run Omega.

JM, there is nothing in the construction of a Saito that can benefit from heat cycling so just let er run until the recommended 40 minutes is up, fly a little rich for a few flights and enjoy.
RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
Jeez dave if you're a smoker these new fangled gas lighters with a hard to find button down the side somewhere and a great big whoosh of flame out the top can be hard on facial hair. What do you think of your 115 and plane combo,i hope mine sounds like i think it will, picked it up last night and trial fitted it to the decathlon with the cowl back on.It fills it nicely and the valve covers just fit.

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
Sounds a bit like when I over fill my Zippo O.F.
On another note...
I finally got myself a tacho and got some readings on my FA-50. I am at sea level. Ambient temp approximately 25 degrees celsius (77f).
With a APC 12x6 prop and 16% nitro I got 9,450rpm peak and backed it off to around 8,950rpm. Should I be dropping 500rpm off the peak or less?
Idle is consistent at 2,400rpm. I cant get the idle any lower than this without the engine slowly dropping off rpm and stopping.
Do these numbers look right to you guys that have used the FA-50 engine?

Awesome. Thanks w8ye.
When I got this engine second hand the owner said the engine didnt have enough power for the model he had it in.
Oddly enough when I started it for the first time it wouldnt rev very hard at all. I removed the glow plug and it had an OS #8 2 stroke plug!
Since I put a Type F in it it hasnt missed a beat.
My favourite engine by far.

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
I had a couple 50's at one time and still own one.
I used the one I sold often. I ran 12 X 6, 12 X 5, 11 X 7 props. I never had any trouble with it. I only owned it for about 10 years. It was probably 5 or 6 yrs old when I got it.
The other 50 I have is a Golden Knight. A fellow gave it to me as a Saito 50 that someone had painted black with a paint brush. It looked terrible. That black paint washed off with some glow fuel and a tooth brush, revealing a nice looking Golden Knight after I put a few new parts on it here and there. But I've never used it other than to run it on the bench.

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
Hey Guys,
I've got a problem with a Saito 100. It overheats within a coulple of minutes. It's in an Aerowoks Edge 540 and I've always used 30% Coolpower Heli fuel and an APC 15x4W prop. I've been flying this set up for about 2 years without any problems. I've tried richening and readjusting the carb, and I've tried using a new gallon of fuel. Any suggestion would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Larry
