RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
On my saito 125, if I set it to say 9000rpm from 9300 before my flight, when I land and check the same setting that was 9000 i am at 9300, and have to richen quite a bit more to get it down to 9000 at that point.
Is this normal to increase like that, which setting is better before or after flight?
Thanks in advance 871

I have a couple of 1.80s and have a problem keeping the spinner backplate (true-turn) tight against the prop driver. Do you guys use anything for friction between them?
Thanks,
Slopoke

My apologies, my understanding was wrong. According to Bill Robison:
"...Three things are needed for "Official" membership. One, as Hobbsy said, is posting here. Second, obviously is owning (or have on order) a Saito engine. Finally, without an assigned number you can not be "In." ...

Alas I have never owed or run a Saito but my good buddy has and I trust his judgement, and the fact that his Saitos make My ( un named) 4 strokes look silly. [img][/img]

Jeffie,
I'll lease you another 30 if that's what it takes. I figure it's only a matter of time until the majority of your engines are Saitos.
Sounds like you paid twice for your buddy's engine[X(]

I have come across a set of feeler gauges that start at .0015 inches (.038mm) and go up in very small increments.
What would say is the perfect valve lash for a particular engine?
Would you give the exhaust valve a hair more clearance?

If your in the range of .0015 to .004 you will not go wrong

I try to set mine as close as I can to the .04mm of the thinner OS gage.

The (.0015") .038mm feeler gauge is thinner than paper by far. Is that not too thin for valve lash?

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
G'day Old Fart over there in Perth.
How's the Phoenix Rainbow with its little Saito FA-30?
I have been away for a few weeks and I saw somewhere that you had bought one. Mine is still electric but ...
I was in Europe and the UK. Best place was Duxford where the Imperial War Museum has its main aircraft collection. Amazing stuff. Everything from a Wright Flyer to Concorde and beyond. As we pulled into the car park, two Spitfires chased each other along the strip and continued to play chasing games for about 15 minutes. Then a Tiger Moth and then a Dragon Rapide. Standing in Corcorde 101 was amazing. It was the British pre-production prototype 102 that came to Sydney and that still holds the world record for a London to New York flight by a passenger aircraft at 2hr 59 minutes. It landed at Duxford in 1983 and has been there ever since. The world record holding sub-sonic passenger aircraft is there too - a VC-10 - an amazingly advanced aircraft for 1963. Big too.
I did not see a single Saito on my entire trip. Very disappointing but I did buy a Laser 100 from the UK.

I have received the Saito 180 from E bay and am about to change the crank shaft. Does anyone have any advice on how I should approach this job? Any special tricks to get the bearings out other than heating in an oven?

Go to your local Ace Hardware/Home Depot/Lowes/etc. and buy a pack of drywall sanding screen. Just cut yourself a disc the size of your prop driver. Makes a great friction disc and one package will last years.

Thanks Guys. I had thought of the emery cloth disk but the sanding screen might be better.
Hard to hold those Satos.

2 strokes and 4 strokes similar in this regard

Freezing the bearings upon assembly helps them fall right into place....

+1 Thats why I like to tune up at a half tank , Some look at me funny for suggesting this though . Dont know where I got the idea , maybe here but its a good idea and still even do it with the Clines.

Sad Satio owner! I sent my Satio 270 in to be repaired and got it back I would say unusable.
I have and have owned many Satios the 300, 270, 80,65,etc. I called horizon before buying this 270 on a Top Flight Stinson to see if they still repaired them they said they did so I got it. I sent it in after running it for check up and a lose pushrod. Taking it apart they broke the intake manifold and said they used JB weld to fix it. I have not even opened the box to look at it because to me JB weld is just a glorified epoxy that will loosen with heat. I'm afraid I may loose the plane if the engine quits.
I have sent in other engines with wear and tear and have always got good results. A OS 48 and Super tiger 90 to bad to fix and out of date I was offered different engines at a small fee which I was happy to pay. But not here just a broken engine back.
Well I called Horizon today to let them know I wasn’t happy. The person that worked on the engine is out of the office till the 10th but they said they would talk to him and get back to me. I’m hoping for good results.

G'day to you mike, must have been a hell of a trip.Standing right next to a spit or mustang as they are started never gets boring either
How's the flying weather over there?.The saito 30 is probably a bit much for the rainbow, mine will climb nearly vertical and dives very fast too..strong airframe. It's also very happy to float around at nearly jogging speed and lands at walking pace.Taped the ailerons (gap) and it does well for mild aerobatics tho the roll rate is still slow.I've squeezed a 115 into my midget mustang..chalk and cheese. Will post some photos if i can get that to work.
cheers
ps mentioned the rainbow to dave and hope he buys one for his 30

G'day OF
Yes, that Merlin engine is a ripper but they always seem to me to make less flame and smoke than other aero engines of the same period.
I am hoping to give a new FA-72 some running today. I have to go out to the club for a meeting and some blokes are going out early to do some Fun Pylon practice. They are flying Skyraider Mach 2s with OS and TT 46 engines. They are also having lots of crashes. They keep running into each other but it seems to keep them amused.
The Rainbow is indeed a strong airframe. I nosed mine into the ground on its first flight when I forgot to pull the antenna up on the radio. Only damage was the canopy and the prop. I was truly amazed. I did have to pull the motor apart to clean the dirt out though. I would like another Rainbow to put the 30 in though at the moment it is in a Dynaflite Butterfly - 100 inches of glider wing on a simple box fuse. Very relaxing though rise-off-ground can be a bit taxing as it loves to ground loop. Best to hand launch.

Here is a new TurboHeader RCSpecialties sent me in exchange for the prototype, it is welded, heat treated to relieve stress and polished to a high luster. I had to take the picture at an odd angle to avoid more glare than picture, it is a work of art. This one is for my 2.20
