RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
I'm looking at getting a new Saito and found Horizons pricing on them questionable. The 82 is $229.99 and the GK version is $415.99! Used to be the GK version of most of their engines were around $20.00. Am I missing something here? Also the 72 is $30.00 more than the 82.

Now's the time to buy a FA-82a! I went to checkoutjust didn't hit the "buy" buttonand the price is $229.99. I suppose this model is being closed out to make room for a newer version.

I thought that was a dirt cheap price. I didn't know if they made a mistake in their pricing or not. Anyway, mine is one it's way!

Here is the video of my P-38 equipped with twin Saito 100s sporting Turbo Headers.
With new mufflers www.youtube.com/watch?v=qTM46P1ilJY
With stock mufflers http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5hd6b...eature=related
With new mufflers www.youtube.com/watch?v=n2IQ8ugSSW0
With stock mufflers www.youtube.com/watch?v=-eemviDIr-M
With new mufflers www.youtube.com/watch?v=UbvNyoFpl-4
Noticed changes from the stock mufflers:
-about 200 RPM increase
-faster throttle responce
-with the twin, the engines are more evenly matched in needle setting, within one click of each other (not sure why)
-less goo down the airplane with the pipes I have on the mufflers (now out the bottom)
-slightly more presure to the tank resulting in a little leaner needle setting
-much better look with the mufflers now in the cowls
-uses less fuel now but still has good smoke
-very nice sound
-lighter and more compact than stock mufflers resulting in less strain on the system from vibration
Good job on the engineering of these after market Saito parts Jim.

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
Just came from checking the engine with the insulated tank and the tank was not shaking as much with the foam insulation but still enough to cause the surging. I had changed every thing, propellerwas balanced then I saw you suggested that I check the spinner. I never thought of checking the spinner. And there it was, a dent on one side, I remember that it did not fit too well and I had to fit it to the back plate and tighten the screw holding the front part in place. So I put on a new spinner and WOW, 90% of the vibration is gone, the engine although still vibrating a little ran perfectly at full throttle, the surging had gone. Thanks for the help.

I had a mud daubers nest in the first bay of my 1/4 scale J3. Did not know it was there until I knocked the wing on the floor a little. Then, the nest came loose...talk about a little rattle, this was a big klunk. I was concerned the nest would shift in flight and throw the balance off. I had to cut into the center bay sheeting, get the nest out and then repair the hole I made. PITA. Now I cover the wing tube and servo lead holes when I store the wings.

Charley, does it have a letter or maybe two letters on the right mounting lug. It appears to look a lot like my early high compression version. This one has no letters on the mounting lug. My early high compression 1.50 doesn't have any either.

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
Hi Guys,
I am a great fan of saito engines. I currently have 3 FA72s, 1 FA180.
Need some help here, my Saito 180 can seem to start after leaving on shelf for 2 years.
I have done the following, but still can't start the engine
-Have oil them before storage
-Have change to a new FS plug
-Have check valve clearance
-Have check that the carb is taking in fuel
-When try to turn the engine shaft, it moves like clock work.
Any ideas how to get it alive?
Thanks

There is no compression!! so i tried to inject fuel direct in to engine via glow plug hole, still no avail.

Besides, I thought I was the only one nuts enough to be sanding on a spinner backplate.... But my new prop balancer will do it, so hey, why not? Right?
Remember this saying! "I cut it TWICE now and it's STILL too short!"

You may need to see if the valves are seating. If one is stuck or sticking, or bent, you won't get compression. I had a friend who Removed the backplate and the glow plug and soaked a motor in Transmission fluid to get buildup off the valves and other parts inside. The valves did release after that. The cleanup was kind of gooey, though. Still, he didn't have to completely tear it down.

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
it appears to have a metal backplate and a metal throttle arm.
seems the compression is stiffer than my 100.
will investigate further

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
Charlie, that looks JUST like my circa-1996-7 Saito 80 GK. What a great running motor that was. I think you didn't get hurt on that deal, let us know how it starts up and runs.
I just looked at the photo up close, and they ran it really lean, so check the engine over carefully, Charlie. A Saito has to get pretty hot to discolor the lifter rod tubes. Nothing there you can't get parts for, though.

Ive had it running, and it runs great.
it will stall my 12v starter.
just need to find a Rx im not using, the one in the plane doesnt seem to work anymore....
owner wasnt at the shop today so i wasnt able to get any history on the plane or engine.
its a really sharp bi plane. looks like none ive seen.
i'll know more in the morning about the engine. after a shakedown flight......

Valves are stuck. I had a 72 that had not been run for a couple years. No compression. I removed the plug, put a few drops of light oil in the cylinder, left the plug out, used a hair dryer to heat up the top end, turned it over for about 15 seconds, and it loosened up. I installed a new plug and it has run great all summer.

Just checking, you DID put the glow plug back in after you injected the fuel, right?

Assemble it back and gained about 20% compression back. Tomorrow may try to start the engine hope this works

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
You could use the transmission fluid that same way. Sounds neater than my friend's method and still addresses the sticky valves.
Glad to hear you are making headway.
I've got a Saito 150 to get running today for the first time. It came on a Waco Bipe I bought and had shipped to me. Seems to have really good compression, so I shouldn't have too many problems with it.

having taken out the top and check the valves inside, I depress both the valves down, it manage to open, then I proceed to oil the inside and heat the valve area.
